Mr. Oak is a Hindu extremist, and as I inferred, he is out to "prove" that all Muslim achievements are really Hindu. He has frequently written articles in the RSS papers. As you may know, the RSS were in the forefront of the demolishing if Babri Masjid in 1962, motivated by the claim that the mosque desecrated the birthplace of the god Rama. This is still a very sensitive item in Indian politics. Mr. Oaks theories are mainly regarded as poor jokes in the academic community. His arguments for why the Taj Mahal is a Hindu temple reveals a thorough lack of knowledge of even elementary facts, like the name of the buried queen. The Asian Wall Street Journal writes (in 2001): "A Hindu conspiracy theorist called P.N. Oak has claimed that the Taj Mahal was originally a Hindu monument, called Tejo Mahalaya, which the invading Muslims appropriated. Nobody took such conspiracy theorists seriously until the rise of the Bharatiya Janata Party in Indian politics, which masterminded the assault on the Ayodhya mosque in 1992, and now, as the leading party of India's governing coalition, is busy rewriting textbooks." Further examples of Mr. Oaks ideas, which I think will speak for themselves: "The Term Moses is the Sanskrit word Mahesh, meaning the Great Lord i.e. Krishna." (World Vedic Heritage, by P.N. Oak. P. 531) P.N. Oak's "Vedic history of the world" claims that the name Australia comes from the Hindi "Astralaya", or "land of missiles". Mr. Oak also thinks that Arabia is an Indian name: "Arabia is an abbreviation. The original word even today is Arbasthan. It originates in Arvasthan. As observed earlier Sanskrit "V" changes into "B". Arva in Sanskrit means a horse. Arvasthan signifies a land of horses, and as we all know Arabia is famous for its horses.", totally disregarding that the first letter of "arab" is the consonant `ain, not the vowel a, and that the -stan is a late Persian suffix, borrowed by the Turks. ThruthSeeker, your quote "The shaving of heads at the time of performing Haj, taking bath and wearing two spotless white seamless cloths [as Brahmachari does at the time of sacred thread ceremony], seven ambulations round the main shrine called Ka’aba are all vividly Hindu customs. The haj ahs closely resemble the mode of pilgrimage and worship in India" is thoroughly refuted on, many sites, for example, http://thetruereligion.org/modules/wfsection/article.php?articleid=149. My personal impression of Mr. Oak is that it is a very safe bet to assume that anything he writes is totally wrong. Indian culture is a wonderful source for much in the world, but it has no need for crazy exaggerations. I agree, for example, that "India had cultural bonds with the Mesopotamia civilization." -- at least there was commerce between those parts of the world, as witnessed by many archeological finds. Claiming that the Indian invention the zero is Vedic is false, though. That the Vedas speak of "emptiness" (shunyata) has no connection with the zero used in calculations. The name shunya was borrowed from the Vedas and applied to the much later invention.
