A select group of achievers were awarded with Outstanding Global Punjabi honour including Baroness Sandip Verma UK, Abhinav Bindra, Sir Judge Mota Singh, Air Chief Marshal N C Suri, Isher Ahluwalia, Satish Gujral, Justice R .S. Sodhi, Justice Ashok Bhan, Jyotsna Suri, Harinder Thakkar, Minister Canada, Malkit Singh UK, Dr. Ruby Dhalla MP Canada, Dr Amarjit Singh USA, Satnam Singh and Marshal of the Indian Air Force Arjan Singh DFC.</p><p> Addressing the august gathering, Smt Preneet Kaur greeted the efforts of the global Punjabis who have glorified the name of Punjab and India with their outstanding achievements. It is a special privilege to be a part of a wonderful initiative taken by the Global Punjabi Society, the minister said. </p><p></p><p>She said that it is truly gratifying to see women achievers like Baroness Sandip Verma, Dr Isher Ahluwalia and Dr Ruby Dhalla for carving a niche as successful politicians and making their mark as an important part of the decision making process. </p><p></p><p>In his enlightening address Sardar Tarlochan Singh MP said, “Global Punjabi Society is a platform to celebrate our achievements and feel proud of our heritage.” Punjab is the land of origin of ancient civilizations of Harappa, Mohenjodaro and birthplace of ancient scholars and thinkers of India, the veteran politician said. Punjab has given two Nobel Prize winners and took immense pride in the big honour conferred to Sir Judge Mota Singh who was recently knighted by the Queen. He called the present generation who have greater privileges than their parents to work hard and maintain the Punjabi culture and Punjabi heritage.</p><p></p><p></p><p> Arjan Singh, Marshal of the Indian Air Force said that all Indians particularly Punjabis are doing well abroad for their adventurous spirit, determination and hard work. Among the very first Punjabis who reached Canada during the First World War are immortalized as great philanthropists, who built schools and other social institutes and shared their success with the common man. Today, Punjabis are leaving their imprint in the political circles of Canada and have succeeded to follow the Indian culture in the most proper way, wherever they go, Marshal Arjan Singh said.</p><p></p><p>Baroness Sandip Verma while addressing the guests pointed out that listening to the distinguished speakers sharing their views about Punjab has been enlightening experience. She said that one thing that epitomizes the Punjabi spirit is that they not only fight for themselves but also for those who cannot fight for themselves.</p><p></p><p>Harinder Thakker MP from Canada shared the tremendous success of Punjabis as path-breaking politicians in the Canadian government. He said out of 27 elected representative of Indian origin in the provincial and federal levels about 90 per cent are Punjabis. The first Prime Minister of Ontario is a Punjabi and the first Indian origin elected representative is a Punjabi. Apart from politics, Punjabis have excelled in various other fields like medicine, business which is a matter of great pride as an Indian, Mr Thakker said. </p><p></p><p>Global Punjabi Society respects and salutes the spirit of Punjabis said Shri Joginder Singh, Chairman, Global Punjabi Society and Former CBI Director. He added that progress of Punjabis is not inconsistent with the progress and development of India. </p><p> </p><p>Mr Jagmohan Singh, Secretary General, Global Punjabi Society said that looking at the encouraging response from the global Punjabis has given him the enthusiasm to dedicate himself for the aim and objectives of the society that is to strengthen the bonds of Punjab, Punjabi and Punjabiyat and to honour the most Outstanding Global Punjabi from around the world.
