Reportedly, the five Sikh Beloveds (the Panj Pyaras) who head the five temporal seats of Sikh religion, at a recent meeting at Amritsar had declared the Gurgaddi Diwas, the coronation day of the seventh Sikh Master Guru Har Rai as the Sikh Environment Day, "in view of the rising global environmental crisis." Reacting to the development, Dr Rajwant Singh, president of EcoSikh, remarked, "This declaration is extremely significant. This is the first time in the history of Sikhism that a day has been set aside to pay attention to nature and to take steps to harness it following the teachings of our Green Guru, Guru Har Rai ji. He inspired Sikhs to live in harmonious relationship with nature and with other living beings. This is the best way to remember him and to take lessons to shape our common future."" The environment drive-- to plant a tree on March 14-was launched by EcoSikh in 2011, which has now been widely adopted by Sikhs across the world. Ravneet Singh from EcoSikh said, "This year it was celebrated by over 1600 Sikh gurdwaras, educational institutions and various organizations with varied action plans. The apex Sikh body, Shiromani Gurdwara Parbhandhak Committee ( SGPC),also reportedly organized plantation of 5000 trees in 145 Gurdwaras, schools and colleges, this year. [/QUOTE]
