AMRITSAR: Head Priest Akal Takht (highest Sikh temporal seat) Jatehdar Gyani Gurbachan Singh Wednesday convened emergency meeting of five high priests on July 26 and asked the Delhi Sikh Gurdwara Management Committee President (DSGMC) Paramjit Singh Sarna to appear at Akal Takht. Sarna was asked to appear at Akal Takht in view of allegation made by him against Supreme Court lawyer H.S. Phoolka who in retaliation offered to quit the 26-year-long battle for justice to victims of the 1984 anti-Sikh riots. However, head priest also issued directions to Phoolka to continue to fight the riot victims' cases. Phoolka has decided to contiunue till July 26. In a letter to Akal Takht head priest, Phoolka said that he was shocked when Sarna raised allegation of receiving crores of rupees for personal benefit. Phoolka said that it was not possible to continue in such a precarious circumstances that has disturbed his day and night peace. “I am aware that my decision would be an adverse impact on the cases of riot victims, but feel helpless. An alternative arrangement to be made”, Phooka added. Phoolka was tempted to take extreme step following the allegation by the president of the DSGMC Paramjit Singh Sarna and his brother Harvinder in the July 17 meeting of the committee that he had taken Rs.1.09 crore from the DSGMC. Whereas, Phoolka told to high priests that so far he got merely Rs. 15,000/- and nothing else. He said that he was offered funds by various NRI Sikhs but refused since his fight was for the people of Sikh religion as it was a Spiritual cause for him. Phoolka himself had suffered at the hands of rioters who ruled Delhi's streets for three days following the assassination of then Prime Minister Indira Gandhi Oct 31, 1984.
