[QUOTE="Dalvinder Singh Grewal, post: 212099, member: 22683"] Sikh studies is not a single subject as it appears from the article. It has many facets; political, economic, social, cultural etc.In social subject religion is the one and in religion we have spiritual, historical, geographical, philosophical and the like. Gurbani is primarily a spiritual scripture though it covers all other aspects as well. The later teachings and life of the Gurus and the Sikhs thereafter are different chapters of Sikh studies. hence to bind Sikh studies to one type or one type will not be the right approach. It has to be dealt from all angles. The present article appears to have been based on English literature on Sikhism. The research on Sikhism is available primarily in Punjabi but also in Hindi, Urdu in addition to a small portion in English where S. Khushwant Singh's rendering are not taken as the true representatives of Sikh Studies though he has written about Sikhism and Gurbani in his own perspective. We have University on the name of Sri Guru Granth sahib and another dedicated to Guru Nanak. They have one department each dedicated to religion and to Guru Nanak studies. All other subjects are not related to Gurbani or Gur Nanak Dev ji. The research in Sri Guru Granth Sahib is not stated to be serious either in the field on which it is named. It appears to be more of a gimic where religion is used for political purposes. There are however individuals like Bhai Santokh Singh, Giani Gian Singh, Bhai Kahn Singh, Giani Ditt Singh etc., who did more work than any so called university. What does SGPC does is any body's guess. Under these circumstances, important is not to harp on one individual subject as the best but to work on the whole gamut of subjects for which a concerted effort is needed by many researchers. Sikh scholars do not join hands together for a total study of Sikhism; it is obvious but what ever maximum they can do they must do. In this regards I look for eagerly the new coming up Sri Guru Granth Sahib University near Nakodar which aims at translating Sri Guru Granth Sahib in various languages involving global researchers, though it is too early to say much about it.
