Amritsar to witness vintage performance of ragas from Guru Granth Sahib today by Navjeevan Gopal at http://www.indianexpress.com/news/amritsar-to-witness-vintage-performance-of-ragas-from-guru-granth-sahib-today/1163362/ Amritsar is all set for a vintage performance of the music and compositions dating back to the times of the Sikh gurus. Gurbani Kirtan Bhai Baldeep Singh, a 13th-generation singer from a long line of masters, will perform all 31 ragas from the Guru Granth Sahib in one session during a seminar by GNDU's Centre on Studies in Sri Guru Granth Sahib at Guru Nanak Bhawan Auditorium in Guru Nanak Dev University on September 2. This will be first time that all 31 ragas found in the Guru Granth Sahib will be sung by one singer at a single session. "It is an honour to be able to recount the nearly forgotten songs of the gurus' court," Bhai Baldeep Singh told The Indian Express. What will make the performance even more special is the use of musical instruments similar to those in vogue in the gurus' times. The instruments, which have been hand-crafted by Bhai Baldeep Singh, include Rebab (used since Guru Nanak Dev's time), Taus (which in Persian means pea{censored} and was in use since the sixth Sikh guru Hargobind Singh's times), Saranda (in vogue since the time of fourth Sikh guru Ram Das). Jori (since fifth guru Arjan Dev) and Pakhawaj (since Guru Nanak Dev). "While some of the instruments are ready to use, work is in progress for a few others. We will exhibit all the instruments and use those which are ready," said Bhai Baldeep. Tools belonging to World War II veteran Harbhajan Singh Mistry that were used to hand craft the instruments will also be showcased. "Unlike many who sing new concoctions of ragas found in the Guru Granth Sahib, my performance will bring out the vintage part, the vintage composition and the traditional repertoire," Bhai Baldeep said. Bhai Baldeep will sing compositions of Guru Ram Das and Guru Arjan Dev, among others.
