[QUOTE="spnadmin, post: 147294, member: 35"] MALOUT (MUKTSAR): This bhog ceremony moved beyond mere eulogies and sharing of personal memories. Gathered to pay tributes to Surinder Badal, the late wife of Punjab chief minister Parkash Singh Badal, religious and political leaders from across the spectrum gave a call to Punjabis to eradicate the scourge of female foeticide, to offer her a real tribute. Top NDA leadership, state politicians, cutting across party lines, almost the entire sent samaj of the region and Sikh clergy from the five temporal seats, besides leading hymn singers of Sikh community, along with thousands of people from the area converged at the local grain market of Malout, near Bathinda, to take part in the bhog ceremony of Surinder Badal, who passed away at Chandigarh on May 24, after a year-long battle with cancer. The call to eradicate female foeticide was given by Giani Gurbachan Singh, Jathedar of Akal Takht, the highest temporal seat of Sikhs, who recalled how the "bibi ji" wanted the clergy to do something about the trend of lavish marriages and dowry in the society. Damdami Taksal chief Baba Harnam Singh Dhuma supported the appeal. Gujarat chief minister Narendra Modi, who recalled how his "dear friend Sukhbir's mother" used to feed us with warm meals when he came for canvassing to Punjab, said Punjab's best tribute to Surinder Kaur would be by throwing out this abominable practice of female foeticide. Former deputy Prime Minister and NDA leader L K Advani, former BJP president Rajnath Singh, leader of opposition in Parliament, Sushma Swaraj, Congress Working Committee member Jagmeet Brar, INLD supremo O P Chautala, CPI leader Joginder Dayal and Lok Bhalai Party president Balwant Singh Ramoowalia were among personalities who addressed the gathering, as they recalled their memories of Surinder Badal.Badal's estranged nephew Manpreet Badal and his father Gurdas Badal were also present at the ceremony along with the extended clan. BJP leader Maneka Gandhi came and sat down with Surinder's daughter Parneet Kaur and daughter-inlaw Harsimrat Badal.
