To cut the turban material in half, you normally just need to cut a small snip at one side and you can then rip it in half. I mostly tie half width dastars too as they are easier to manage. As for sizes, I do not think there is no rough estimates, everyone I know ties dastars of different sizes...

These Kirpans are sharper as standard then all Taksali Kirpans I have had before. Could definitely be sharpened more though.

I can assure you Rory, that our Kirpans are definitely not crudely made. The design of our Kirpans are the traditional Taksali Design (hand made by Taksali Singhs) and they are made from Sarbloh (Iron).

A bit late but for future reference we also offer Dastaars at www.SikhiStore.com. And basic difference between the different fabrics is that Rubia has dense weaving, Full Voile has light weaving and Mal- Mal has very fine and very light weaving.
