ਸਲੋਕੁ ॥
Salok.
Salok (Core theme of eight sabads/hymns in the Astpadi)
ਉਰਿ ਧਾਰੈ ਜੋ ਅੰਤਰਿ ਨਾਮੁ ॥ ਸਰਬ ਮੈ ਪੇਖੈ ਭਗਵਾਨੁ ॥
Ur ḏẖārai jo anṯar nām. Sarab mai pekẖai bẖagvān.
One who keeps self heart always aware of the creator. Sees the creator embedded in all.
ਨਿਮਖ ਨਿਮਖ ਠਾਕੁਰ ਨਮਸਕਾਰੈ ॥ ਨਾਨਕ ਓਹੁ ਅਪਰਸੁ ਸਗਲ ਨਿਸਤਾਰੈ ॥੧॥
Nimakẖ nimakẖ ṯẖākur namaskārai. Nānak oh apras sagal nisṯārai. ||1||
One thankful to the creator with every blinking moment. Such beyond reproach helps all to salvation.


ਅਸਟਪਦੀ ॥
Asatpaḏī.
Eight stanzas hymn.


ਸੋ ਪੰਡਿਤੁ ਜੋ ਮਨੁ ਪਰਬੋਧੈ ॥ ਰਾਮ ਨਾਮੁ ਆਤਮ ਮਹਿ ਸੋਧੈ ॥
So pandiṯ jo man parboḏẖai. Rām nām āṯam mėh soḏẖai.
Such is true Pandit who enlightens own mind. Seeks out the creator’s understanding in mind.

ਰਾਮ ਨਾਮ ਸਾਰੁ ਰਸੁ ਪੀਵੈ ॥ ਉਸੁ ਪੰਡਿਤ ਕੈ ਉਪਦੇਸਿ ਜਗੁ ਜੀਵੈ ॥
Rām nām sār ras pīvai. Us pandiṯ kai upḏes jag jīvai.
One who tastes the sweetness of creator’s understanding. Such Pandit’s teachings sustain world’s living.

ਹਰਿ ਕੀ ਕਥਾ ਹਿਰਦੈ ਬਸਾਵੈ ॥ ਸੋ ਪੰਡਿਤੁ ਫਿਰਿ ਜੋਨਿ ਨ ਆਵੈ ॥
Har kī kathā hirḏai basāvai. So pandiṯ fir jon na āvai.
Keeps enunciation of the creator in the heart. Such Pandit does not go through birth life cycles.

ਬੇਦ ਪੁਰਾਨ ਸਿਮ੍ਰਿਤਿ ਬੂਝੈ ਮੂਲ ॥ ਸੂਖਮ ਮਹਿ ਜਾਨੈ ਅਸਥੂਲੁ ॥
Beḏ purān simriṯ būjẖai mūl. Sūkẖam mėh jānai asthūl.
Understanding of the essence of the vedic religious scriptures. Understanding that all visible universe is creation of the invisible.

ਚਹੁ ਵਰਨਾ ਕਉ ਦੇ ਉਪਦੇਸੁ ॥ ਨਾਨਕ ਉਸੁ ਪੰਡਿਤ ਕਉ ਸਦਾ ਅਦੇਸੁ ॥੪॥
Cẖahu varnā ka▫o ḏe upḏes. Nānak us pandiṯ ka▫o saḏā aḏes. ||4||
One such who teaches all four classes. Nanak forever bows to such Pandit.

ESSENCE: In the salok, Guru ji define who to be beyond reproach. Constantly aware of the creator, sees creator embedded in all, thankful to the creator in every living moment, such is the guide to salvation.

Guru Arjan Dev ji in Astpadi 9, 4th stanza clarify who is a true Pandit or wise one. Self enlightening with creator’s understanding, imbued in understanding sustains the worldly living, embedded with creator in heart such is life cycle independent, understanding the scriptures but also that all is one creator.

Guru ji conclude that such communicates wisdom without class distinction and is to be so respected forever.
