ਸਲੋਕੁ ॥
Salok.
Salok (Core theme of eight sabads/hymns in the Astpadi)

ਸੰਤ ਸਰਨਿ ਜੋ ਜਨੁ ਪਰੈ ਸੋ ਜਨੁ ਉਧਰਨਹਾਰ ॥ ਸੰਤ ਕੀ ਨਿੰਦਾ ਨਾਨਕਾ ਬਹੁਰਿ ਬਹੁਰਿ ਅਵਤਾਰ ॥੧॥
Sanṯ saran jo jan parai so jan uḏẖranhār. Sanṯ kī ninḏā nānkā bahur bahur avṯār. ||1||
Those who seek humble guidance from the pious, such are saved. Nanak, denigrating the pious encumbers one in repetitive births.

ਅਸਟਪਦੀ॥
Asatpaḏī.
Eight stanzas hymn

ਸੰਤ ਕਾ ਨਿੰਦਕੁ ਮਹਾ ਅਤਤਾਈ ॥ ਸੰਤ ਕਾ ਨਿੰਦਕੁ ਖਿਨੁ ਟਿਕਨੁ ਨ ਪਾਈ ॥
Sanṯ kā ninḏak mahā aṯṯā▫ī. Sanṯ kā ninḏak kẖin tikan na pā▫ī.
Defamer of the pious is great malefactor. Defamer of the pious does not get a moment of tranquility.

ਸੰਤ ਕਾ ਨਿੰਦਕੁ ਮਹਾ ਹਤਿਆਰਾ ॥ ਸੰਤ ਕਾ ਨਿੰਦਕੁ ਪਰਮੇਸੁਰਿ ਮਾਰਾ ॥
Sanṯ kā ninḏak mahā haṯi▫ārā. Sanṯ kā ninḏak parmesur mārā.
Defamer of the pious is very brutal. Defamer of the pious is denunciated by the supreme creator.

ਸੰਤ ਕਾ ਨਿੰਦਕੁ ਰਾਜ ਤੇ ਹੀਨੁ ॥ ਸੰਤ ਕਾ ਨਿੰਦਕੁ ਦੁਖੀਆ ਅਰੁ ਦੀਨੁ ॥
Sanṯ kā ninḏak rāj ṯe hīn. Sanṯ kā ninḏak ḏukẖī▫ā ar ḏīn.
Defamer of the pious is with no kingdom. Defamer of the pious is wretched and poor.

ਸੰਤ ਕੇ ਨਿੰਦਕ ਕਉ ਸਰਬ ਰੋਗ ॥ ਸੰਤ ਕੇ ਨਿੰਦਕ ਕਉ ਸਦਾ ਬਿਜੋਗ ॥
Sanṯ ke ninḏak ka▫o sarab rog. Sanṯ ke ninḏak ka▫o saḏā bijog.
Defamer of the pious is afflicted with all ills. Defamer of the pious is always disunited.

ਸੰਤ ਕੀ ਨਿੰਦਾ ਦੋਖ ਮਹਿ ਦੋਖੁ ॥ ਨਾਨਕ ਸੰਤ ਭਾਵੈ ਤਾ ਉਸ ਕਾ ਭੀ ਹੋਇ ਮੋਖੁ ॥੩॥
Sanṯ kī ninḏā ḏokẖ mėh ḏokẖ. Nānak sanṯ bẖāvai ṯā us kā bẖī ho▫e mokẖ. ||3||
Defaming of the pious is wickedest of wicked. Nanak if the pious likes, such too are liberated.

ESSENCE: In the salok, Guru ji describe the importance of company of the pious and the futility of denigrating the pious. Salvation comes in the company and restless transformations follow ill will towards the pious.

Guru Arjan Dev ji in Astpadi 13, 3rd sabad discuss the impacts of slandering or defaming the pious. Suffer malefaction, no piece of mind, brutal actions, creator rejects, wretched and poor without any power, disunited and so afflicted with much ills.

Guru ji conclude the defamer of the pious being wicked could still be saved if the pious so wish.

NOTE: There is marvelous use of metaphors in this sabad to address and convey the audience of the Guru ji's times. It is a dis-service to turn these around as though Guru ji imply belief in any subject(s) of metaphors.
