Vaheguru ji ka Khalsa, Vaheguru ji ki Fateh !

This first year for Sikh Organisation for Prisoners Welfare (SOPW) has been very productive and successful. We have identified and currently look after approximately one hundred prisoners and have been able to facilitate the release/bailout of 10 Political Sikh Prisoners this year already.

This includes the bailout in November of Bibi Balwinder Kaur the wife of Jagtar Singh Hawara (pictures added to FB group) who had spent nearly 5 years in Sangrur jail and also Pargat Singh, Sukhdev Singh and Amarjit Singh from Nabha Jail who had served between five and 12 years respectively.

For continuance and expansion of our projects we need support of the Sangat, and for this we need to get the message of the plight of the Political Sikh prisoners to Sikhs worldwide.

This is a very important cause, and in most cases we are about 10 or 15 years too late. However, we can and must act now to reduce the suffering and hardship experienced by Sikhs who have been illegally detained over decades for their religious and political beliefs, for the Sikh Qaum.

No Sikh, or any individual with morals should rest and allow these grave abuses of human rights continue:

What can you do:

• Financially support and contribute towards the monthly welfare of a Sikh prisoner

• help advocate the plight of Political Sikh prisoners worldwide, by distributing literature in your towns/cities or through the Internet (forums, websites etc)

• Join our Facebook Fan Page, and please INVITE your family and friends to it, whilst you may not be able to support/volunteer , maybe a relative or friend may.

Please be sure to join our Fan Page: http://www.facebook....39282080?ref=ts

and group on Facebook if you are signed up:

I am very happy to see SPN showing such support for this group.

They managed to get some prisoners, locked away for 5-12 years, released at the time of the police murder(s) in Ludhiana, They declined going to be interviewed by the press, as planned, and insisted on going at once to Ludhiana. We cannot afford to have this chardi kala courage locked away.

This is for the good of the prisoners, of course; it is equally good for the whole Panth. We all win!

Veer Aman Singh ji,

On behalf of the whole SOPW Team, I would like to express my gratitude for the warm welcome we have received since joining the Sikh Philosophy Network.
It is very encouraging to see the importance attached to the plight of the Sikh Prisoners.

Mai Harinder Kaur ji, thanks again for your support . These Sikhs are very Chardi Kala, even though largely neglected and forgot about by the Panth they remain loyal to the Guru and the Qaum.
Click below to read an article about the study of death row inmates in Tihar Jail, which states that Prof Devender Pal Singh Bhullar although in isolation under 24-hour surveillance spends his time reading the Gurbani:
http://www.outlookindia.com/article.aspx?233153

Three Gursikhs were released a day before the Ludhiana Kaand, and it had been arranged that they would be met by a volunteer from the UK, to be taken to Siri Hamandir Sahib. Having spent between five and 12 years in prison, in appalling conditions, suffering from inhumane treatment we want to take them from hell to heaven on earth. However, they heard that anti-sikh elements were arriving in Ludhiana, and cancelled the meeting opting to attend the protest instead.

With Maharaj Kirpa 2010 will see the release of more Sikh Prisoners. In some cases, it is simply a matter of assigning a lawyer to take cases to Court, to question the legality of the detention, as many have no valid charges against them.
Another way of release is the settlement of fines. A loophole in the law which allows indefinite detention of Sikh Political Prisoners by issuing large fines which the prisoners cannot pay off. Thus, many Sikhs are sitting in prison 5+ years after serving their original sentence.
