Friday, December 1, 2006 (Chandigarh):

Former cricketer and BJP Member of Parliament Navjot Singh Sidhu has been found guilty of culpable homocide not amounting to murder, by the Punjab & Haryana High Court.

The quantum of the punishment will be decided on Wednesday.

The BJP has accepted Sidhu's resignation and he is planning to move the Supreme Court to challenge the verdict.

"For me morality and honesty are more important than any office. Hence, I have decided to resign," Sidhu said.

"I have always stood for the truth and will continue to serve the public, will continue to fight for truth" he said.

The district and sessions judge at Patiala had on September 22, 1999 acquitted Sidhu in a case registered under Section 304 and 34 IPC.

Sidhu has been convicted for causing the death of a Gurnam Singh on December 27, 1988.

Gurnam was beaten up by Sidhu and his associates in a dispute over the parking of vehicles outside the State Bank of Patiala there.
