The first Punjabi Vocabulary thread was a lot of fun for the contributors. So here is another thread. This time about plants, including trees, flowers, vegetables, spices, you name it! Just find a flower, plant, tree or spice in Sri Guru Granth Sahib, and paste in the Guru vaak where you found it!

Sandal wood Tree, treated as a symbol of status, and purity, spreading pleasant smell throughout the area wherever they are planted, was prohibited for individuals to cultivate. Recently, the Government of Kerala has removed the ban and has permitted the public to CULTIVATE SANDALWOOD TREE WITHOUT ANY RESTRICTIONS.

Sandal wood trees are planted as usually, and it will take 15 to 20 years to grow and yield profit. Usually, at the present rates , One Kg. of Sandalwood costs, Rs. 1,200/- to Rs. 2,250/-This will be multiplied several times in the coming years, as the market for sandalwood, and its bye-products , throughout the world are increasing daily.

Sandalwood is used mainly for extraction of its oil for several cosmetics and as a main ingredient in so many Ayurvedic Products. Another main factor is that, planting Sandal wood trees is treated as a symbol of Status, and planted area will be full of pleasant and pleasing smell of the wood.

Anaemia: High in iron, bananas can stimulate the production of haemoglobin in the blood and so helps in cases of anaemia.

Blood Pressure: This unique tropical fruit is extremely high in potassium yet low in salt, making it the perfect food for helping to beat blood pressure. So much so, the US Food and Drug Administration has just allowed the banana industry to make official claims for the fruit's ability to reduce the risk of blood pressure and stroke.

Brain Power: 200 students at an English school were helped through their exams this year by eating bananas at breakfast, break and lunch in a bid to boost their brain power. Research has shown that the potassium-packed fruit can assist learning by making pupils more alert.

Constipation: High in fibre, including bananas in the diet can help restore normal bowel action, helping to overcome the problem without resorting to laxatives.

[IMG]Depression: According to a recent survey undertaken by MIND amongst people suffering from depression, many felt much better after eating a banana. This is because bananas contain tryptophan, a type of protein that the body converts into serotonin - known to make you relax, improve your mood and generally make you feel happier.

Hangovers: One of the quickest ways of curing a hangover is to make a banana milkshake, sweetened with honey. The banana calms the stomach and, with the help of the honey, builds up depleted blood sugar levels, while the milk soothes and re-hydrates your system.

Heartburn: Bananas have a natural antacid effect in the body so if you suffer from heart-burn, try eating a banana for soothing relief.

Morning Sickness: Snacking on bananas between meals helps to keep blood sugar levels up and avoid morning sickness.

Mosquito bites: Before reaching for the insect bite cream, try rubbing the affected area with the inside of a banana skin. Many people find it amazingly successful at reducing swelling and irritation.

Nerves: Bananas are high in B vitamins that help calm the nervous system.
Overweight and at work? Studies at the Institute of Psychology in Austria found pressure at work leads to gorging on comfort food like chocolate and crisps. Looking at 5,000 hospital patients, researchers found the most obese were more likely to be in high-pressure jobs. The report concluded that, to avoid panic-induced food cravings, we need to control our blood sugar levels by snacking on high carbohydrate foods (such as bananas) every two hours to keep levels steady.

PMS: Forget the pills - eat a banana. The vitamin B6 it contains regulates blood glucose levels, which can affect your mood.

Seasonal Affective Disorder (SAD): Bananas can help SAD sufferers because they contain the natural mood enhancer, trypotophan.

Smoking: Bananas can also help people trying to give up smoking, as the high levels of Vitamin C, A1, B6, B12 they contain, as well as the potassium and magnesium found in them, help the body recover from the effects of nicotine withdrawal.

Stress: Potassium is a vital mineral, which helps normalise the heartbeat, sends oxygen to the brain and regulates your body's water-balance. When we are stressed, our metabolic rate rises, thereby reducing our potassium levels. These can be re-balanced with the help of a high-potassium banana snack.

Strokes: According to research in "The New England Journal of Medicine"eating bananas as part of a regular diet can cut the risk of death by strokes by as much as 40%!

Temperature control: Many other cultures see bananas as a "cooling" fruit that can lower both the physical and emotional temperature of expectant mothers. In Thailand, for example, pregnant women eat bananas to ensure their baby is born with a cool temperature.

Ulcers: The banana is used as the dietary food against intestinal disorders because of its soft texture and smoothness. It is the only raw fruit that can be eaten without distress in over-chronic ulcer cases. It also neutralises over-acidity and reduces irritation by coating the lining of the stomach.

Warts: Those keen on natural alternatives swear that, if you want to kill off a wart, take a piece of banana skin and place it on the wart, with the yellow side out. Carefully hold the skin in place with a plaster or surgical tape!

Safflower was originally grown for the flowers that were used in making red and yellow dyes for clothing and food preparation. Today this crop supplies oil, meal, birdseed, and foots (residue from oil processing) for the food and industrial products markets, although this crop is now primarily grown for the oil.

The oil in linoleic safflower contains nearly 75% linoleic acid, which is considerably higher than corn, soybean, cottonseed, peanut or olive oils. This type of safflower is used primarily for edible oil products such as salad oils and soft margarines.

Researchers disagree on whether oils high in polyunsaturated acids, like linoleic acid, help decrease blood cholesterol and the related heart and circulatory problems. Nonetheless, it is considered a "high quality" edible oil and public concern about this topic made safflower an important crop for vegetable oil.

Varieties that are high in oleic acid may serve as a heat-stable, but expensive cooking oil used to fry potato chips and french fries. As an industrial oil, it is considered a drying or semidrying oil that is used in manufacturing paints and other surface coatings. The oil is light in color and will not yellow with aging, hence it is used in white and light-colored paints. This oil can also be used as a diesel fuel substitute, but like most vegetable oils, is currently too expensive for this use.

The meal that remains after oil extraction is used as a protein supplement for livestock. The meal usually contains about 24% protein and much fiber. Decorticated meal (most of hulls removed) has about 40% protein with a reduced fiber content. Foots are used to manufacture soap. The birdseed industry buys a small portion of the seed production. Sheep and cattle can graze succulent safflower and stubble fields after harvest.

Bhai Gurdas: Vaar 2 Pauri 20

dhulaan andari vaasu hai hoi bhavaru|ubhaanaa|
The Lord is the fragrance in flowers and becoming black bee He is attracted towards flowers.

anbaan andari ras dharay koil rasu maanaa|
Sap in the mangoes is He and becoming nightingale He enjoys the same.

We can see that the words used for mangoes and flowers have not changed in modern Panjabi since the time of Guru Arjan Dev Ji in the above vaars.

(Note: not sure if you can read the Panjabi fonts in my posts - can someone let me know?)

    Dalsingh ji

Thank you very much -- I will make the correction -- detail escape me at times. Whenever you are able to return to the threads -- I hope soon - there are more plants to go.

Cotton, wheat, grapes, sesame, jasmine, rice, corn, beans, and acacia to name a few ;)

I can read the Punjabi fonts. Hurry back soon.

    Jasmine

punddar kaes kusam thae dhhoulae sapath paathaal kee baanee ||
Your hair is whiter than the jasmine flower, and your voice has grown feeble, as if it comes from the seventh underworld.

lochan sramehi budhh bal naathee thaa kaam pavas maadhhaanee ||
Your eyes water, and your intellect and strength have left you; but still, your sexual desire churns and drives you on.

thaa thae bikhai bhee math paavas kaaeiaa kamal kumalaanaa ||
And so, your intellect has dried up through corruption, and the lotus flower of your body has wilted and withered.

avagath baan shhodd mrith manddal tho paashhai pashhuthaanaa ||4||
You have forsaken the Bani, the Word of the Immortal Lord, in this mortal world; in the end, you shall regret and repent. ||4||

    Sant Baini
    Ang 93

    Gurmukhi

But in the line below ਕੁਸਮ, kusam - flower is used for jasmine because a "white" flower is implied: ਪੁੰਡਰ ਕੇਸ ਕੁਸਮ ਤੇ ਧਉਲੇ ਸਪਤ ਪਾਤਾਲ ਕੀ ਬਾਣੀ

In other parts of Guru's Bani, such as this verse on Ang 546 Guru Arjan Dev

laekhaa dhharam bhaeiaa thil peerrae ghaanee raam ||
When the Righteous Judge of Dharma reads your account, you shall be squeezed like a sesame seed in the oil-press.

We see thil peerrae and ghaanee that state explicitly- thil sesame, peerrae will be squeezed or crushed, and ghaanee oil press

Yet in others we see only the idea of a sesame seed, Ang 1375 Sant Kabir. See below:

kabeer ghaanee peerrathae sathigur leeeae shhaddaae ||
Kabeer, I was being crushed like sesame seeds in the oil-press, but the True Guru saved me.

ghaanee oil-press, peerrathae crushed - and the idea of sesame seed is implied in the verse but supplied by the translator.

    Celebrating with sesame: Lohri

Punjabi community in city celebrates lohri
    14 Jan 2009, 0425 hrs IST,

PUNE: Green-and-gold bangles jingling to the rhythm of the dance, traditional gold-lined ghagras and salwar suits, red-and-green parandas' marked the celebration of lohri, the Punjabi harvest festival on Tuesday.

On the occasion, the Punjabi Cultural Association (PCA) in the city has come up with elaborate plans. "We have been celebrating this festival every year since PCA was established 30 years ago. The celebrations began at 8 pm and went on till late in the evening. The members also brought along guests, and we had visitors from other communities as well," K L Bhatija, trustee, PCA, told TOI.

Sharing the Lohri celebrations, anand Kochchar, president, PCA, said the celebrations are sponsored by the families who are celebrating their first Lohri. "We had five such families this year. They came together and planned the evening," Kochchar said.

The first Lohri is considered significant, and is celebrated by families who have seen a or a new birth in the previous year. The first Lohri of a new bride is particularly significant, where the in-laws present clothes and jewellery to the bride, and a grand feast is organised in the family. "Every year, we light a bonfire, and play games. It is an opportunity for the community to and bond. It's also a chance to give a glimpse of our traditions to our children," Kochchar added.

Bhatija said the PCA members begin with playing tambola until everyone gathers. "After everyone gets together, the traditional fire was lit in the evening. Senior members of the community performed the puja. We sang traditional Lohri songs, and performed bhangra around the bonfire," he said.

The menu for the evening dinner was quintessential Punjabi. Kaali dal, rajma, Punjabi halwa are some traditional items on the menu. "We cannot celebrate it on the scale they do in Punjab. But we try our best to keep up the spirit," Kochchar said.

Meanwhile, a number of city-based Punjabis households had made plans for private Lohri celebrations. Like 25-year-old city-based marketing professional Preet Kaur, who celebrated her first Lohri after marriage. "I have been shopping for Lohri for the last two weeks. As a child, when I saw other married celebrating their first Lohri, I would look at them wistfully and make mental notes of what I would do on my first. The day finally came," Preet said.

Maninder Singh, a senior IT professional, celebrated the birth of his grandson this Lohri. "We had a small personal celebration. Close friends and family were invited to our farmhouse outside the city. After sunset, we lit the fire and performed the puja," Singh said. All present then circled the traditional fire and threw peanuts, sesame seeds and other bhog items shouting "Aadar aye dilather jaye" (May honour come and poverty vanish), he shared.

Manpreet Kaur, his wife, added, "Lohri is not just a festival of harvest. It is the time to thank God for providing for us, and to celebrate his creation."

    Traditionally Speaking

Women do not participate in Bhangra. They have their own performance in the courtyard, known as Giddha dance

    * The festival is also called Tilhori as the Punjabi word for sesame is til' and for molasses is rohri'

    * For peasants, Lohri mark the beginning of a new financial year and it's on this day they settled the division of crop between themselves and tillers

    * Dulha Bhatti is the heroic icon associated with Lohri, and is considered the Punjabi Robinhood. On Lohri, children go from door to door singing traditional songs in praise of Dulha Bhatti, and elders oblige them with money and sweets.
