AMRITSAR : All India Sikh Students Federation and Sikhs for Justice have submitted a memorandum to Punjab Chief Minister Parkash Singh Badal and all members of Punjab Vidhan Sabha on Wednesday demanding that June 06 be declared as state holiday in Punjab to commemorate June 1984 attack on Golden Temple.

In June 1984 army had carried out operation 'Bluestar' to flush out terrorists from the holy shrine. Federation and Sikh for Justice submitted a memorandum with advisor to chief minister Daljeet Singh Cheema on Wednesday.

They demanded to the CM's advisor to declare June 06 as state holiday to commemorate the June 1984 attack on Sri Harmandir Sahib, destruction of Sri Akal Takht Sahib, Sikh's supreme temporal seat and killing of Sikh men, women and children.

They also demanded to recognize the massacre of Sikhs in June 1984 as "genocide" and asked the government to issue an official notification of the same. The memorandum also asked for raising a memorial in Golden Temple complex in the memory of those who were killed during June 1984 attack.

"Declaring June 06 as state Holiday is a demand of the Sikh community which has been ignored for too long," said President of Federation Karnail Singh Peermohammad while issuing a warning that if by May 31, 2011, June 06 was not declared as a state holiday, the federation would give a call for Punjab bandh on June 06.

Gurpatwant Singh Pannun, legal advisor to Sikh for Justice said, "Now that Sikh genocide issue is being discussed in the Parliaments of the foreign nations, it becomes imperative that the government of Punjab which is homeland of Sikhs must declare June 06 as state holiday".

This doesn't ever make sense. Instead of getting more work for people of Punjab, we ask for another day off or state bandh so that poor middle and lower class people have to close their shops. Though terming 1984 as genocide makes sense. And even that has been elusive so far.

    I probably don't. Here's what people do:

    1. Republic Day Sit home and watch parade
    2. Independence Day, Kite flying (I don't)
    3. Mahatma Gandhi's Birthday, Another day of subdued violence in household
    4. Budha Purnima Still no time for meditation
    5. Christmas Day Big time commercialization
    6. Dussehra (Vijay Dashmi) Add another ten evils to yourself for the year
    7. Diwali (Deepavali) Pollution and smoke. If Ram Chandra had to come to Ayodha today, he would have hard time figuring out where to land
    8. Good Friday Long weekend - people don't know it marks the day Jesus was crucified
    9. Guru Nanak's Birthday Day to forward Wikipedia article on Guru Nanak to friends
    10. Prophet Mohammad's Birthday See people eating halal dishes
    11. Holi Play holi, but who's Prahlad
Would anyone spend time with people in the widow colony? Would people learn Gatka for self defence? Will there be talks inspiring people to take up law and be big in politics? Will there be efforts to bring the kaum back to Chardi Kala like that of 1700s? Will there be anything sustainable?

You forgot Baba Sri Chands Birthday..imagine stretching his arm to send you to the MOON...while the Americans spent billions on the Moon mission..we always had Baba Sri Chand who could lift you there in a jiffy FREE !!

HOLIDAYS are political tools...in Badal land esp.

hehe yes get all the 'miracles' re-done every holiday. Blessed was baba Sri Chand to be born in the house of Guru Nanak. but why do WE need a holiday for that?

Baba Sri Chand rebelled against GURU NANAK JI's GURMATT and beat a different PATH. That Path is now being promoted by the Gobind sadan Guys of baba virsa etc (dead now)...and the various ANTI-SIKH groupings of DERA and Dehdharee Gurus, Babas like dhariwallah Dhadis like Moranwali etc etc. BADAL being under their thumb..declared a HOLIDAY to Honour baba sri Chand..the alternative to Gurmatt and Gadee of SGGS.
Notice there is NO Holiday to celebrate Guru Ramdass Jis birthday..Guru Arjun Jis shaheedee, Guru teg bahdur Jis shaheedee etc etc whcih are MORE IMPORTANT than Baba Sri Chand. Even the Birthdays of Babas Ajit Singh, Jhujaar Singh, Zorawar Singh and fateh Singh are NOT HOLIDAYS. Its ALL POLITICAL.PERIOD.

animatedkhanda1The demand to declare 6th of June a holiday is more to test where the true loyalties of Badal lay, and his symphasies to the Sikh kom.
It will also help expose to what extend the BJP holds SGPC in its cluches.
The demand is not just for a holiday, but also for a memorial for all those who were murdered by the armed forces of the Delhi Sarkar.
People who try to forget or ignore their history are destined to repeat it.
How can one trivialize one of the most traumatic episodes in Sikh history by comparing it with the birthday of Sri Chand.
One more holiday is not going to be catastrophic for the Sikhs ,Punjab or the mankind.:angryyoungsingh:
