Bhopal Tragedy: SAD Draws Parallels With '84 Riot

Ruling Shiromani Akali Dal in Punjab today drew parallels between 1984 anti-sikh riots and the Bhopal gas tragedy saying their victims had not got justice and accused the Congress of shielding the culprits in both the cases.

"The Congress party not only shielded the main culprits of 1984 Sikh massacre but it also shielded the main culprit of the Bhopal gas tragedy, (UCC Chairman) Warren Anderson," SAD Secretary and party Spokesman Daljit Singh Cheema said here.

Drawing a parallel between the two tragedies of 1984, Cheema said despite the passage of 25 years the affected families have not been able to get justice in both the cases.

"The role of the Central government and the CBI is almost same in both the cases. In the Bhopal gas leak incident, the Congress led government helped Anderson flee from the country and in the second case it helped culprits by offering them plum postings in the party as well as the government," he claimed in a statement here.

"We strongly condemn the explanations being given... That if Anderson was not allowed to flee, he would have been killed by people. There can not be any explanation for the sympathies being shown by Congress towards the person responsible for such a grave tragedy," Cheema said.
