Islam means "submission" and it comes from the Arabic root salaam "peace" such that one could translate it as, "the peace which comes from submission" or "the peace which comes from self-surrender to God". According to the Holy Qur'an, there has been one true religion throughout history Islam. Conservative Islamic scholars have interpreted this wrongly throughout history as being a triumphalist declaration of Islamic superiority over all other religions. This understanding has often led to the ludicrous claim that "Abraham, Moses, Jesus" and even Alexander the Great were all Muslims. Quite the contrary, whenever Islam is used in the Holy Qur'an, it is not an actual religion that is referred to but rather the word submission. This revelation can radically change one's understanding of Qur'anic ayats (verses) such as the following: "...He that chooses a religion other than Islam, it will not be accepted of him and in the world to come, he will be one of the lost..." - Qur'an (3:85) Such verses as the above are a 'boon' to those who are unflinchingly opposed to Islam and many Muslim ulema do not help the matter by actually interpreting this verse as a declaration of religious supremacy. This verse is substantiated by Hadiths, which are practically all spurious texts, which have Muhammad claim that Islam does refer to the specific religion of Muhammad and that if anyone leaves Islam then he must be killed and that only Islam has truth in it, all other religions are false with even the People of the Book (Jews and Christians) having merely corrupted versions of the true religion. Such rigid - and erroneous - interpretations have caused much suffering for people throughout history. In fact the word islam in the Arabic of the Qur'an means complete devotion/submission to God, untampered or diluted with idolatry. As the Qur'anic translator Abdel Haleem writes: "...Those who read this word islam in the sense of the religion of the Prophet Muhammad will set up a barrier, illegitimately based on this verse, between Islam and other monotheistic religions..." - Abdel Haleem Understood in this sense, which is not in line with Orthodox Islam whether Sunni or Shi'a but which is far more faithful to the actual text of the Qur'an, we can see that the belief that there has only been one religion throughout history - that of islam "submission" to God - is not too far from the Catholic understanding of there being one, primordial religion of God to which all people of good will belong: "...That which is now known as the Christian religion existed among the ancients, and never did not exist; from the beginning of the human race until the time when Christ came in the flesh, at which time the true religion, which already existed began to be called Christianity...For this reason, I said: 'In our times, this is the Christian religion,' not because it did not exist in Former times, but because it had received this name in later times..." - Saint Augustine of Hippo (354 –430), Church Father and Doctor of the Church, Retractions, Book One, part 12, "One Book on the True Religion" "...We have been taught that Christ is the first-born of God, and we have declared above that He is the Word [or reason] of whom all mankind partakes. Those who lived reasonably [with the Word] are Christians, even though they have been called atheists. For example: among the Greeks, Socrates, Heraclitus and men like them; among the barbarians [non-Greeks], Abraham...and many others whose actions and names we now decline to recount, because we know it would be tedious...All truth wherever it is found belongs to us as Christians..." - Justin Martyr (AD 100–165), Early Church Father Augustine taught that there was one, eternal religion of God and that all the holy people of ancient times - lets think of Socrates, Buddha, Plato, the Hindu Upanishadic sages - were all spiritually speaking members of that religion. He said that all godly ancient Greek philosphers such as Socrates and Plato were spiritually speaking Christians; and he extended this even to present times, saying that all good people who follow the truth known to their consciences are spiritual Christians. The Qur'an helped the Arabs understand this by saying that all people are "muslims" by birth, that is born in a state of submission to God's will which is the primordial religion (also called Ad din in the Qur'an). Religion is simply self-surrender to the Will of God. That was true religion yesterday, it is true religion today and it will be true religion tommorrow. Whoever surrenders himself to the Divine Will is a follower of the true religion which in Arabic we call islam. And in this vein Mother Theresa of Calcutta once proclaimed, "I too am a Baha'i, and a Muslim, and a Jew and a Buddhist". She could say that because true religion is self-surrender to the Will of God. This is the true meaning of "Islam" as explained in the Holy Granth. Muslims, I pray, will one day awaken to this truth en masse - revealed in their own Holy Book! The Qur'an teaches that there is only one religion of God throughout history, which is submission to God. In the Arabic language this results in the terms "islam" and "muslims". This is similar to how Saint Paul explained that we are all "Jews" spiritually and not just those who are circumcised members of the actual Jewish faith.
