Why worry o mortal. Nanak contemplate the invisible and indescribable creator.
Quote:
ESSENCE: In the salok, Guru ji state the eternal truth prevailing and so prevailing forever from the past to the future.

Guru Arjan Dev ji in Astpadi 17, 5th sabad describe the power and prowess of the creator versus humans. Creator An ant is given life while millions in army may die, till the last breath one is protected,. Human species tries without success many methods but all for naught. Only the creator so keeps alive or lets die and no one else.

Guru ji conclude why worry but rather be contemplating upon and understanding the creator.
Please note all errors are mine and I stand corrected.

Sat Sri Akal.

Re: Sukhmani Sahib Astpadi 17 Sabad 5 /

I admire and acknowledge this work and effort that you are putting in tremendously. I do regard it of a very high value and order. It is helping me to come to terms with words and also aid in learning more.
I'm just starting out here with this only method that I can use in translating by singling out words and then getting the sentence together.
I'll try and show you what I mean.

By all means correct me where I'm wrong as I am no way as advanced as you and others. I think you will get the idea of how I'm trying to do it as there are many others that like me are not literate enough in gurmukhi and punjabi and just give up trying to translate. It's a huge learning curve for me and if someone like me can do it to an extent then it's possible for many others that just give up and don't bother trying.

Thanks to you it has been bought to my attention that the translations currently available can be misleading, this has been one of the many reasons I thought I could try for myself. It's not easy and sometimes takes a while just to do a single line!!

So here goes-

Nīkī kīrī mėh kal rākẖai. Bẖasam karai laskar kot lākẖai.
In little ant strength is established. Such can reduce to ashes army of hundreds of thousands, millions

With the first part, I make small ant or insect (niki kiri),
inside, within or contains(meh)
power,competence or strength(kal)
to protect or guide (rakhai)
dust or ashes (bhasam)
to make, create, to form ( karai)
(laskar) not too sure, maybe large quantity, numbers
(kot) numerical value of million or billion
(lakhai) as in lak or hundreds of thousands.
so all in, I get very similar to yours-
The single little ant's strength or competence is protected(rakhai) by creator/lord. Yet, creator/lord can still reduce huge numbers (kot lakhai) of ants to dust or ash.

Jis kā sās na kādẖaṯ āp. Ŧā ka▫o rākẖaṯ ḏe kar hāth.
If such does not take out the breath of someone. So such is protected under the hand.

word for word on above seems fine, the one who's breath is not taken away is still protected (rakhat) by given hand(de kar hath)

Mānas jaṯan karaṯ baho bẖāṯ. Ŧis ke karṯab birthe jāṯ.
Humans try many different efforts. Such efforts become useless.

(manas jatan) -efforts of humans (karat baho bhat) are of many varieties. but (kartab) are done-reffering to efforts are useless(birthe) in these varieties.
Well, I think I've learnt that 'birthe' implies 'useless' here.

Mārai na rākẖai avar na ko▫e. Sarab jī▫ā kā rākẖā so▫e.
No one else kills or preserves. All life forms so protects.
Again, same as what you say.
No other than he, can kill or protect, all (sarab) life forms are protected or guarded by him

Kāhe socẖ karahi re parāṇī. Jap Nānak parabẖ alakẖ vidāṇī. ||5||
Why worry o mortal. Nanak contemplate the invisible and indescribable creator.

(kahe soch) for what thought
(karahi) to get done or carry out
(re parani) living or respected living being
Why carry out such thought or worry as you mention. As Nanak contemplates the invisible(alakh) and wonderful or indescribable(vidani)

I have actually learned more vocab here, thank you.

I hope you can see how I'm using this technique to advance further even though there are many limitations to my vocab. The essence at the end is put together very well and simplifies it extremely.

Waheguru

Re: Sukhmani Sahib Astpadi 17 Sabad 5 /

Luckysingh ji thanks for your effort. I do want you to recognize a possible approach if it is of use in your study.

For example the following will show how I do it. I download the Gurbani from srigranth.org with Bhai Manmohan Singh ji's Teeka and Prof. Sahib Singh ji's Punjabi Translation. Dr. Sant Singh Khalsa ji's translation is by default and Dr. Thind's phonetics is by default. Then I review it within all sources and reading from my knowledge of Punjabi and Guru ji in mind, I try to create my translation and essence. Occasionally I also use Mahan Kosh and dictionaries at SriGranth.org plus the normal English dictionaries.

So here is the raw material for this Sabad in my first draft. It may vary from what I finalize to post at spn.

Let us see if it helps understand/share some of the considerations and nuances,

True in the beginning, True throughout the ages,

Present from the beginning, prevailing through the ages

Eight stanzas hymn

Nīkī kīrī mėh kal rākẖai.
He infuses His Power into the tiny ant;

In little ant strength is established
Bẖasam karai laskar kot lākẖai.
it can then reduce the armies of millions to ashes

Such can reduce to ashes army of hundreds of thousands, millions
Jis kā sās na kādẖaṯ āp.
Those whose breath of life He Himself does not take away -
xxx

If such does not take out the breath of someone
Ŧā ka▫o rākẖaṯ ḏe kar hāth.
He preserves them, and holds out His Hands to protect them.

So such is protected under the hand
Mānas jaṯan karaṯ baho bẖāṯ.
You may make all sorts of efforts,

Humans try many different methods
Ŧis ke karṯab birthe jāṯ.
but these attempts are in vain.

Such efforts become useless
Mārai na rākẖai avar na ko▫e.
No one else can kill or preserve -

(ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਤੋਂ ਬਿਨਾ ਜੀਵਾਂ ਨੂੰ) ਨਾਹ ਕੋਈ ਮਾਰ ਸਕਦਾ ਹੈ, ਨਾਹ ਰੱਖ ਸਕਦਾ ਹੈ, (ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਜੇਡਾ) ਹੋਰ ਕੋਈ ਨਹੀਂ ਹੈ;
No one else kills or preserves
Sarab jī▫ā kā rākẖā so▫e.
He is the Protector of all beings.
ਸਰਬ = ਸਾਰੇ।

All life forms so protects
Kāhe socẖ karahi re parāṇī.
So why are you so anxious, O mortal?

Why worry o mortal
Jap Nānak parabẖ alakẖ vidāṇī. ||5||
Meditate, O Nanak, on God, the invisible, the wonderful! ||5||

Nanak contemplate the invisible and indescribable creator

Your approach is very thorough and your end results are excellent at times. It does seem a little advanced for me at this stage. I can learn a lot with your given method with time, but I think I just need a few steps at a time as yet.

I like the way where every angle is explored using Prof.Sahib ji's translation and Bhai Manmohan Singh ji's teeka. This way, no avenue is left uncovered or rushed through.

It makes me admire your approach even more and to understand the work the scholars have put in previously is remarkable ,to say the least.
I'm going to try working on methods on a daily basis hopefully.

Sat sri akal.
