ਬਹੁ ਸਾਸਤ੍ਰ ਬਹੁ ਸਿਮ੍ਰਿਤੀ ਪੇਖੇ ਸਰਬ ਢਢੋਲਿ ਪੂਜਸਿ ਨਾਹੀ ਹਰਿ ਹਰੇ ਨਾਨਕ ਨਾਮ ਅਮੋਲ ੧॥
Baho sāsṯar baho simriṯī pekẖe sarab dẖadẖol. Pūjas nāhī har hare Nānak nām amol. ||1||

Many holy books and treatises have been researched. Guru Nanak, nothing comes close to the understanding of the esteemed creator or be so valued.


ਅਸਟਪਦੀ
Asatpaḏī.

Eight stanzas hymn.

ਚਾਰਿ ਪਦਾਰਥ ਜੇ ਕੋ ਮਾਗੈ ਸਾਧ ਜਨਾ ਕੀ ਸੇਵਾ ਲਾਗੈ
Cẖār paḏārath je ko māgai. Sāḏẖ janā kī sevā lāgai.

If one seeks the four cardinal entities. Such should be in service of the humble and pious.

ਜੇ ਕੋ ਆਪੁਨਾ ਦੂਖੁ ਮਿਟਾਵੈ ਹਰਿ ਹਰਿ ਨਾਮੁ ਰਿਦੈ ਸਦ ਗਾਵੈ
Je ko āpunā ḏūkẖ mitāvai. Har har nām riḏai saḏ gāvai.

If one wants to get rid of the ills. All the time keep aware of creator’s virtues in the heart.

ਜੇ ਕੋ ਅਪੁਨੀ ਸੋਭਾ ਲੋਰੈ ਸਾਧਸੰਗਿ ਇਹ ਹਉਮੈ ਛੋਰੈ
Je ko apunī sobẖā lorai. Sāḏẖsang ih ha▫umai cẖẖorai.

One who wants to earn honor. Renounce the ego and be in company of the pious.

ਜੇ ਕੋ ਜਨਮ ਮਰਣ ਤੇ ਡਰੈ ਸਾਧ ਜਨਾ ਕੀ ਸਰਨੀ ਪਰੈ
Je ko janam maraṇ ṯe darai. Sāḏẖ janā kī sarnī parai.

One who is scared of life and death. Should fall at the feet of the humble and pious.

ਜਿਸੁ ਜਨ ਕਉ ਪ੍ਰਭ ਦਰਸ ਪਿਆਸਾ ਨਾਨਕ ਤਾ ਕੈ ਬਲਿ ਬਲਿ ਜਾਸਾ ੫॥
Jis jan ka▫o parabẖ ḏaras pi▫āsā. Nānak ṯā kai bal bal jāsā. ||5||

A humble one who is delirious to see the creator. Guru Nanak, extols such immensely.

ESSENCE: In the salok, Guru ji sets the objective of discourse in Astpadi 3. In searching the available religious wisdom, following there recommendations, Guru ji state that nothing comes close to the seeking of creator’s understanding.

Guru Arjan Dev ji in Astpadi 3rd, 5th sabad greatly describe the value of keeping company of the humble and pious. Such is one of the biggest gifts to self. It helps with fears of life and death, building honor and comfort in life.


One so seeking the creator, Guru ji extol them.

Char Padarath -To me it looks like a saying and it is not exactly four like char dina di chandini.

Veer ji thanks for your comment. Following was the source of my translation,

ਚਾਰਿ ਪਦਾਰਥ ਜੇ ਕੋ ਮਾਗੈ

चारि पदारथ जे को मागै ॥

Cẖār paḏārath je ko māgai.

One who prays for the four cardinal blessings

ਜੋ ਕੋਈ ਚਾਰ ਵੱਡੀਆਂ ਦਾਤਾ ਦੀ ਯਾਚਨਾ ਕਰਦਾ ਹੈ,

ਚਾਰਿ ਪਦਾਰਥ = ਧਰਮ, ਅਰਥ, ਕਾਮ, ਮੋਖ। ਕੋ = ਕੋਈ ਮਨੁੱਖ।

ਜੇ ਕੋਈ ਮਨੁੱਖ (ਧਰਮ, ਅਰਥ, ਕਾਮ, ਮੋਖ) ਚਾਰ ਪਦਾਰਥਾਂ ਦਾ ਲੋੜਵੰਦ ਹੋਵੇ,

A person at another site has also given a nicer description as,
The 4 blessings called the ‘Char Padarath’ in Gurbani
form the basic needs for all people.

1. Dharam - discipline. Understanding of his or
her duties i.e. virtues (ethics).

2. Arath - assets. He or she has no shortage of
money, precious metals, pearls etc. and obtains
all desired wealth.
Note: Not as Greed (Lobh) and attachment (Moh)

3. Kaam - desires. His or her all desires get fulfilled,
and it includes marriage and children.
Note: Not the out of control "Lust" as perceived to be a thief.

4. Moksh - liberation. He or she attains emancipation.

Metaphorically it will translate to something like

"If one seeks a complete and fulfilled family life"

Do you believe it is better. There are some areas in translations where some metaphorical usage is hard to convey in a Western sense. I did not want to take a leap too far out of the truer translation. Even though it makes for easier reading. I will probably make more note and perhaps work harder on some of these. The other approach is to add notes of explanantion but it affects flow of reading which is of value on its own too.

Veer ji metaphors are used to link with the people that Guru ji was teaching. "ਚਾਰਿ ਪਦਾਰਥ / Char Padarath" must have been determined by Guru ji as a way to carry the message forward for the audience (mostly Hindus) to convey the value of good spiritual company. This core tenet of this sabad 5 in Astpadi 3. I have no way of knowing any different while reading and understanding. Perhaps our Parchariks can test it in audiences similar and see if it still works. It probably still does work with Hindus or Sikhs with Hindutva embedded.
