What Really happened in Mecca. Popular Sikh Beleif has been that Guru nanak Ji visited Mecca and "swung Mecca around". This is challeneged by Muslims as wrong...so what really happened...

The Sikh version of this story ( many believe it is a MIRACLE..no less !!)
is based on Bhai Gurdass Jis Vaar No. 32.

Bhai Gurdass Jis Vaar clearly says that Baba Nanak went to Mecca wearing Neel Bastar - cloth acceptable in Mulsim Mecca, He ahd his book with him, and the Musalla..the Cloth/Mat used by Muslims for Prayers. Baba nanak then went to rest in a MOSQUE that Hajis usedand when night fell Baba nanak Ji fell asleep..with his FEET towards the MEHRAAB...the Special SECTION in a Mosque that signified the DIRECTION OF MECCA. The word MEHRAAB is significant....so is MECCA....

1. Firstly what is "MECCA" in Gurbani ?
On reading Gurbani as recorded in Sri Guru Granth Sahib Ji..

Page 1158...the MECCA is MANN..the MIND...NOT the PHYSICAL PLACE in SAUDI ARABIA. Mann kar MECCA..make the Mann your MECCA..the KIBLA (direction of Mecca) your BODY !!

Now back to the Bhai Gurdass Ji Vaar..

We have determined that Bhai Gurdass Ji NEVER SAID anything about Baba nanak Jis feet towards MECCA...the word used is MEHRAAB..the special place in a MOSQUE that shows direction of Mecca and is used for Preaching.

Follwoing Bhai Gurdass Ji further...
JEEVAN Maree Latt dee...
Here again words have been grossly MISUNDERSTOOD. The METAPHOR of "Latt" where the word latt is spelled with Siharee means a HABIT..a BAD HABIT. It is commonly said in Punjabi..so and so has Latt of Gambling..drug abuse..remaining idle...unemployable...etc..etc..Metaphorically such aBad habit is a "weight" tied to ones LEGS..making proper walking impossible (Walking on Life's Path ) Here the word JEEVAN is misunderstood to be anme of a KAZI..and the word Latt is mistakenly taken to be Baba nanak jis FEET/LEGS.
The actual meaning of the Line is..a Person with bad habit who has lost the "art" of Living..a lost human being...a human who doesnt have the Manners of a Good Muslim (hence a ***** in Muslim Garb )
A Kazi came..and seeing Baba Nanak ji sleeping in that position angrily pulled at Baba Jis legs and...Baba nanak "turned HIS MANN..his Mecca..with His Logic. The Vital point to note is that Baba nanak Ji had His FEET towards the MEHRAAB...But the MEHRAAB did not TURN/REVOLVE....its the "Mecca" that Turned/revolved..and "Mecca" as we have INTERNAL PROOF from Gurbani of Sri Guru Granth Sahib Ji..is NOT a physical place but the Mann in Human Body.
So its very simple..the Kazi came in great anger..but when He "touched" Baba Nanak Jis "charans of aatmik Gyaan..Divine Knowledge...and had a discussion with Guru Ji..he was convinced and his Mann, his "mecca" shifted towards the Logic and divinity of Guru nanak Jis Message.

And what is the Kala..the Miracle here. Sri Guru Granth Sahib Ji once more..
Page 1346

The Place of divine RESIDENCE is this HUMAN BODY. God..Allah..Waheguru..Raam..Krishan..Gopi..Narayan ..doesnt LIVE/RESIDE in nay ONE PARTICULAR HOLY PLACE. I think its is Kabir Ji who asks..IF Allah the Creator resides in the "west/Mecca" then WHO pray....takes care of the EAST ?? This is also an indication of Gurmatt stand on "special holy place of residence of The Creator". The CREATOR RESIDES in HIS CREATION.

Once the Kazi and his co-religionists understood this Vital Message..and changed their THINKING..their Mann..the "miracle" occurred..the "mecca turned"

Why such a GROSS MISUNDERSTANDING ? Simple answer is we are LOSING our expertise in our beautiful language, its Metaphors and Usage. having lost all that valuable VIRSA..we are left at the mercy of ILLETERATE Sants/babas/derawallahs who go of the EXTREMELY SUPERFICIAL MEANINGS...and MISLEAD everyone else. The REST are so GULLIBLE..that they swallow hook line and sinker wahtever the gyani, the parcharak, the granthi, the baba,,the brahmgyani..the snat ji says..as "surely HE KNOWS"..its HIS DUTY TO KNOW..we are mere Sikhs..have other reesponisbilities..work,..families..jobs...why we must waste time learning Gurbani...and SO the BLIND LEAD THE BLIND..all one happy family.

Adapted with thanks from. Sikh Marg ???? ????

Re: What really happened in Mecca?

Gyani ji,

Guru Fateh.

Thanks for the excellent explanation about the Mecca incident and its true meaning. Yes indeed, both Mecca and Pilgrimages dwell within a person so that the person can experience the true metamorphosis, from a crawling caterpillar to horizon exploring, nectar tasting butterfly.
Reference:: Sikh Philosophy Network http://www.sikhphilosophy.net/showthread.php?t=26973

Kudos to our visionary Gurus who gave us the tools so we can stop crawling and start exploring the horizons of our own lives by making Sri Guru Granth Sahib Ji, our ONLY GURU, our only GPS.

Thanks once again.

Re: What really happened in Mecca?

Another way of viewing this is from the point of devotion. We all know that Guru Nanak's presence has had a overwhelming impact on the consciousness of those who came in close encounters with this Mahaan Hastee, our GuruJi.

In one of the Punjabi/Urdu poems about Heer Ranjha called Ni Mein Kamli aa. The words are:-

Haji Log Meccay Val Jandey, Ni Mera Ranjha Mera Mecca
(Haji's go to Mecca, but My lover, Ranjha is my Mecca)

So my take on this is that the attempt to put the inner shift in consciousness into appropriate words, does not do justice to the whole episode, having in mind that what is more real is the innerself than anything else outside of ourselves. We are spiritual beings living in a physical body. Thus, when we internalize an experience, we are heading in the right direction.

Here we are sending you the video link below, where we tried to reply the Br Imran
regarding Guru Nanak Jee's visit to Mecca.

Part 2) http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rs0Qac1YIbo

Respected Sikh Cyber Members,

Waheguru jee ka Khalsa Waheguru jee kee Fateh

Prabhdeep Singh has already shared appropriate response but message needs to be passed on to Mr. Imran and other Keshadhari person of Ranchi, who could have explained to the participating audiances. However, this may be done now by the Editors of Sikh Magazines in Punjab. For instance, S. Ramesh Singh of Jamshedpur or any other Sikh within Bihar, Jharkhand, Orissa, etc. could do this Seva.

In addition to Bhai Gurdas Vaar 1 - Pauri 32, 33, 34, 35, 36 and 37;
In his Book: "Sketch of The Sikhs" published in 1812, Lieutenant-Colonial John Malcolm had stated that.."Aftar Nanac had visited all the cities of India, and explained to all ranks the great doctrines of the unity and omnipresence of God, he went to Mecca and Medina, where his actions, his miracles, and his long disputations with the most celebrated Muhammedan saints and doctors, are most circumstantially recorded by his biographers...
at pages 28-29 of Reprint in June 2007.

In "History of the Panjab", published in 1889, Syad Muhammand Latif at page 243 wrote:

"He (Nanak) travelled over the whole of India; visited Persia, Kabul and other parts of Asia, and, it is said, even Mecca. A story is related by both Hindus and Mahomedians in connection with Nanak's visit to Mecca. It is said that, while at Mecca, Nanak was found sleeping with his feet to the Kaaba, before which the Mahomedans prostrate themselves when performing their devotions. The Kazi, Ruku-ud-din, who observed
this, angrily remarked: "Infidel, how dare you dishonour God's house by turning your feet towards it!" "Turn them, if you can," replied Nanak, "in a direction where the house of God is not."

In "History of the Sikhs", Vol. 1, Edition 1984 at page 66, Dr. Hari Ram Gupta said:

"Nanak dressed himself in the manner of a Haji or pilgrim to Mecaa and Medina. He put on blue garments, carried an earthen jug for water, and a small carpet for saying prayers. A thick staff was in his hand. "And when an opportunity offered, he shouted the Muhammadan call to prayer like any orthodox follower of the Arabian prophet." At Mecca, while sleeping his feet moved towards the Ka'ba, the sacred shrine of Islam. The angry Mulla named Jiwan kicked and scolded him for showing disrespect to the house of God. Quietly came the answer:

"Pray, turn my feet in the direction where all-pervading God is not present."

In the Sikh History Books, Principal Teja Singh/Dr. Ganda Singh, Khushwant
Singh and Dr. Gopal Singh have also narrated the said incident.

Thus, while attending any such Multi-Faith Seminars, Sikh Scholars should not be afraid to call a spade a spade based on Gurbaani and historical events.

Dear Sir,

Thanks for asking comments. Please find my view point as follows:

1. Should missionary work be pursued more energetically by Sikhs? Why doubt? Why delay? Get into it? Do it. Don’t get into discussions.

2. Who should be the audience to receive the message of Guru Nanak? Guru Nank’s message is each and every person in the world. He spoke to everyone; high or low; good or bad. Why do you differ? Speak to everyone. Convey everyone what he said. His message is for all for all the times.
Reference:: Sikh Philosophy Network http://www.sikhphilosophy.net/showthread.php?t=26973
Reference:: Sikh Philosophy Network http://www.sikhphilosophy.net/showthread.php?t=26973

3. Should greater efforts toward the conversion of non-Sikhs to Sikhism be pursued? No rituals of conversions. Convert hearts and minds. We have sufficient numbers to expand. First make them clear about Guru’s message. Let them live as Gurmukhs first.

4. What does the word "proselytizing" mean to Sikhs? Is it different from the meaning in other religions (e.g., Islam or Christianity)? We are not a religion. We are a wave. We have to go to each corner and reach everyone. If we do our job rightfully all others are bound to follow: Who does not wish to follow a Gurmukh and to become one?

5. Do Sikh missionary colleges have a vital role to play? Sikh Missionary colleges started with a good motto; did well initially but now they too are becoming business centres and ego developing points. Still they can be said to be doing better than most of us. Let us all be missionaries and people will copy you when you are true Gurmiuklhs. The Philosophy of Guru Nanak teaches all to become Gurmukhs; who are nearer God. They follow: sach-ho orai sabhu ko upar sach acha:r.

Yours Sincerely,

Dalvinder Singh Grewal
Col Dr
