Who is "Mohan"?

Sri Guru Granth Sahib Ji Ang 248:

ਗਉੜੀ ਮਹਲਾ ੫ ॥
Ga▫oṛī mėhlā 5.
Gauree, Fifth Mehl:
ਮੋਹਨ ਤੇਰੇ ਊਚੇ ਮੰਦਰ ਮਹਲ ਅਪਾਰਾ ॥
Mohan ṯere ūcẖe manḏar mahal apārā.
O Mohan, your temple is so lofty, and your mansion is unsurpassed.
ਮੋਹਨ ਤੇਰੇ ਸੋਹਨਿ ਦੁਆਰ ਜੀਉ ਸੰਤ ਧਰਮ ਸਾਲਾ ॥
Mohan ṯere sohan ḏu▫ār jī▫o sanṯ ḏẖaram sālā.
O Mohan, your gates are so beautiful. They are the worship-houses of the Saints.
ਧਰਮ ਸਾਲ ਅਪਾਰ ਦੈਆਰ ਠਾਕੁਰ ਸਦਾ ਕੀਰਤਨੁ ਗਾਵਹੇ ॥
Ḏẖaram sāl apār ḏai▫ār ṯẖākur saḏā kīrṯan gāvhe.
In these incomparable worship-houses, they continually sing Kirtan, the Praises of their Lord and Master.
ਜਹ ਸਾਧ ਸੰਤ ਇਕਤ੍ਰ ਹੋਵਹਿ ਤਹਾ ਤੁਝਹਿ ਧਿਆਵਹੇ ॥
Jah sāḏẖ sanṯ ikaṯar hovėh ṯahā ṯujẖėh ḏẖi▫āvhe.
Where the Saints and the Holy gather together, there they meditate on you.
ਕਰਿ ਦਇਆ ਮਇਆ ਦਇਆਲ ਸੁਆਮੀ ਹੋਹੁ ਦੀਨ ਕ੍ਰਿਪਾਰਾ ॥
Kar ḏa▫i▫ā ma▫i▫ā ḏa▫i▫āl su▫āmī hohu ḏīn kirpārā.
Be Kind and Compassionate, O Merciful Lord; be Merciful to the meek.
ਬਿਨਵੰਤਿ ਨਾਨਕ ਦਰਸ ਪਿਆਸੇ ਮਿਲਿ ਦਰਸਨ ਸੁਖੁ ਸਾਰਾ ॥੧॥
Binvanṯ Nānak ḏaras pi▫āse mil ḏarsan sukẖ sārā. ||1||
Prays Nanak, I thirst for the Blessed Vision of Your Darshan; receiving Your Darshan, I am totally at peace. ||1||
ਮੋਹਨ ਤੇਰੇ ਬਚਨ ਅਨੂਪ ਚਾਲ ਨਿਰਾਲੀ ॥

You adore the One Lord, the Unknowable Lord and Master; His Power gives Support to all.
ਤੁਧੁ ਬਚਨਿ ਗੁਰ ਕੈ ਵਸਿ ਕੀਆ ਆਦਿ ਪੁਰਖੁ ਬਨਵਾਰੀਆ ॥
Ŧuḏẖ bacẖan gur kai vas kī▫ā āḏ purakẖ banvārī▫ā.
Through the Guru's Word, you have captured the heart of the Primal Being, the Lord of the World.
ਤੂੰ ਆਪਿ ਚਲਿਆ ਆਪਿ ਰਹਿਆ ਆਪਿ ਸਭ ਕਲ ਧਾਰੀਆ ॥
Ŧūŉ āp cẖali▫ā āp rahi▫ā āp sabẖ kal ḏẖārī▫ā.
You Yourself move, and You Yourself stand still; You Yourself support the whole creation.
ਬਿਨਵੰਤਿ ਨਾਨਕ ਪੈਜ ਰਾਖਹੁ ਸਭ ਸੇਵਕ ਸਰਨਿ ਤੁਮਾਰੀਆ ॥੨॥
Binvanṯ Nānak paij rākẖo sabẖ sevak saran ṯumārī▫ā. ||2||
Prays Nanak, please preserve my honor; all Your servants seek the Protection of Your Sanctuary. ||2||
ਮੋਹਨ ਤੁਧੁ ਸਤਸੰਗਤਿ ਧਿਆਵੈ ਦਰਸ ਧਿਆਨਾ ॥
Mohan ṯuḏẖ saṯsangaṯ ḏẖi▫āvai ḏaras ḏẖi▫ānā.
O Mohan, the Sat Sangat, the True Congregation, meditates on you; they meditate on the Blessed Vision of Your Darshan.
ਮੋਹਨ ਜਮੁ ਨੇੜਿ ਨ ਆਵੈ ਤੁਧੁ ਜਪਹਿ ਨਿਦਾਨਾ ॥
Mohan jam neṛ na āvai ṯuḏẖ jāpėh niḏānā.
O Mohan, the Messenger of Death does not even approach those who meditate on You, at the last moment.
ਜਮਕਾਲੁ ਤਿਨ ਕਉ ਲਗੈ ਨਾਹੀ ਜੋ ਇਕ ਮਨਿ ਧਿਆਵਹੇ ॥
Jamkāl ṯin ka▫o lagai nāhī jo ik man ḏẖi▫āvhe.
The Messenger of Death cannot touch those who meditate on You single-mindedly.
ਮਨਿ ਬਚਨਿ ਕਰਮਿ ਜਿ ਤੁਧੁ ਅਰਾਧਹਿ ਸੇ ਸਭੇ ਫਲ ਪਾਵਹੇ ॥
Man bacẖan karam jė ṯuḏẖ arāḏẖėh se sabẖe fal pāvhe.
Those who worship and adore You in thought, word and deed, obtain all fruits and rewards.
ਮਲ ਮੂਤ ਮੂੜ ਜਿ ਮੁਗਧ ਹੋਤੇ ਸਿ ਦੇਖਿ ਦਰਸੁ ਸੁਗਿਆਨਾ ॥
Mal mūṯ mūṛ jė mugaḏẖ hoṯe sė ḏekẖ ḏaras sugi▫ānā.
Those who are foolish and stupid, filthy with urine and manure, become all-knowing upon gaining the Blessed Vision of Your Darshan.
ਬਿਨਵੰਤਿ ਨਾਨਕ ਰਾਜੁ ਨਿਹਚਲੁ ਪੂਰਨ ਪੁਰਖ ਭਗਵਾਨਾ ॥੩॥
Binvanṯ Nānak rāj nihcẖal pūran purakẖ bẖagvānā. ||3||
Prays Nanak, Your Kingdom is Eternal, O Perfect Primal Lord God. ||3||
ਮੋਹਨ ਤੂੰ ਸੁਫਲੁ ਫਲਿਆ ਸਣੁ ਪਰਵਾਰੇ ॥
Mohan ṯūŉ sufal fali▫ā saṇ parvāre.
O Mohan, you have blossomed forth with the flower of your family.
ਮੋਹਨ ਪੁਤ੍ਰ ਮੀਤ ਭਾਈ ਕੁਟੰਬ ਸਭਿ ਤਾਰੇ ॥
Mohan puṯar mīṯ bẖā▫ī kutamb sabẖ ṯāre.
O Mohan, your children, friends, siblings and relatives have all been saved.
ਤਾਰਿਆ ਜਹਾਨੁ ਲਹਿਆ ਅਭਿਮਾਨੁ ਜਿਨੀ ਦਰਸਨੁ ਪਾਇਆ ॥
Ŧāri▫ā jahān lahi▫ā abẖimān jinī ḏarsan pā▫i▫ā.
You save those who give up their egotistical pride, upon gaining the Blessed Vision of Your Darshan.
ਜਿਨੀ ਤੁਧਨੋ ਧੰਨੁ ਕਹਿਆ ਤਿਨ ਜਮੁ ਨੇੜਿ ਨ ਆਇਆ ॥
Jinī ṯuḏẖno ḏẖan kahi▫ā ṯin jam neṛ na ā▫i▫ā.
The Messenger of Death does not even approach those who call you 'blessed'.
ਬੇਅੰਤ ਗੁਣ ਤੇਰੇ ਕਥੇ ਨ ਜਾਹੀ ਸਤਿਗੁਰ ਪੁਰਖ ਮੁਰਾਰੇ ॥
Be▫anṯ guṇ ṯere kathe na jāhī saṯgur purakẖ murāre.
Your Virtues are unlimited - they cannot be described, O True Guru, Primal Being, Destroyer of demons.
ਬਿਨਵੰਤਿ ਨਾਨਕ ਟੇਕ ਰਾਖੀ ਜਿਤੁ ਲਗਿ ਤਰਿਆ ਸੰਸਾਰੇ ॥੪॥੨॥
Binvanṯ Nānak tek rākẖī jiṯ lag ṯari▫ā sansāre. ||4||2||
Prays Nanak, Yours is that Anchor, holding onto which the whole world is saved. ||4||2||

Who is this Mohan? Sometimes it appears as a name for Karta Purakh, sometimes it appears to be referring to a person, but like that person is also God? SriGranth.org suggests Mohan was a son of Guru Amar Das?

A reference to Sahib singh's Teeka would show that 'Mohan' has been referred to the Almighty only. Kindly refer the link.It would be very helpful .

Thank you Taranjeet ji, but I don't know how to read Punjabi yet so Sahib Singh's teeka is beyond me.

Bhai Manmohan Singh's translation is in stark contrast to the Professor's, but it still loses integrity with tuks like:

Thou adorest the One incomputable Lord, who, through His Omnipotence is giving support to all the universe.

By Guru's instruction, thou hast captured the heart of Creator, the Primal Being.

Mohan believes Itself to be One, adores Itself and by Guru's instruction captured It's own heart?

Perhaps the essence of this shabad (and reference to Mohan) is being majorly lost in translation.

If there is any way Sahib Singh's teeka can be summarised by a kind member here if it will help to clarify I would be very grateful.

Mohan refers to God as a Charmer.

We might be charmed for some time by Maya in our life, but once we are in awe of Akaal Purakh, nothing else can entice us!

ਦੈਆਰ = ਦਯਾਲ, ਦਇਆਲ। ਗਾਵਹੇ = ਗਾਵਹਿ, ਗਾਂਦੇ ਹਨ। {ਨੋਟ: ਬਾਬਾ ਮੋਹਨ ਜੀ ਦਾ ਕੀਰਤਨ ਕਿਤੇ ਭੀ ਕਿਸੇ ਭੀ ਧਰਮਸਾਲਾ ਵਿਚ ਕੋਈ ਸੰਤ ਜਨ ਕਦੇ ਨਾਹ ਗਾਂਦੇ ਰਹੇ ਹਨ, ਨਾ ਹੁਣ ਗਾਂਦੇ ਹਨ}।

ਤੁਝਹਿ = (ਹੇ ਮੋਹਨ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ!) ਤੈਨੂੰ। {ਬਾਬਾ ਮੋਹਨ ਜੀ ਨੂੰ ਨਹੀਂ}।
(ਹੇ ਮੋਹਨ!) ਜਿਥੇ ਭੀ ਸਾਧ ਸੰਤ ਇਕੱਠੇ ਹੁੰਦੇ ਹਨ ਉਥੇ ਤੈਨੂੰ ਹੀ ਧਿਆਉਂਦੇ ਹਨ।

Wherever the pious and the learned gather, you are contemplated upon

ਹੇ ਦਇਆ ਦੇ ਘਰ ਮੋਹਨ! ਹੇ ਸਭ ਦੇ ਮਾਲਕ ਮੋਹਨ! ਤੂੰ ਦਇਆ ਕਰ ਕੇ ਤਰਸ ਕਰ ਕੇ ਗਰੀਬਾਂ ਅਨਾਥਾਂ ਉਤੇ ਕਿਰਪਾਲ ਹੁੰਦਾ ਹੈਂ।

Show benevolence the enchanting giving creator, so the feeble be saved

ਨਾਨਕ ਜੋਦੜੀ ਕਰਦਾ ਹੈ, ਮੈਂ ਤੇਰੇ ਦੀਦਾਰ ਲਈ ਤਿਹਾਇਆ ਹਾਂ। ਤੇਰਾ ਦੀਦਾਰ ਪ੍ਰਾਪਤ ਕਰਕੇ ਮੈਂ ਸਮੂਹ ਖੁਸ਼ੀ ਪਾ ਲੈਂਦਾ ਹਾਂ।

ਦਰਸਨ ਸੁਖੁ = ਦਰਸਨ ਦਾ ਸੁਖ। ਸਾਰਾ = ਲੈਂਦੇ ਹਨ ॥੧॥
(ਹੇ ਮੋਹਨ!) ਨਾਨਕ ਬੇਨਤੀ ਕਰਦਾ ਹੈ-ਤੇਰੇ ਦਰਸ਼ਨ ਦੇ ਪਿਆਸੇ (ਤੇਰੇ ਸੰਤ ਜਨ) ਤੈਨੂੰ ਮਿਲ ਕੇ ਤੇਰੇ ਦਰਸਨ ਦਾ ਸੁਖ ਮਾਣਦੇ ਹਨ ॥੧॥

Nanak humbly prays for visualization, meeting will provide all the comforts

ਹੇ ਮੋਹਨ! ਉਪਮਾ-ਰਹਿਤ ਹੈ ਤੇਰੀ ਬੋਲ ਬਾਣੀ ਅਤੇ ਅਨੋਖੀ ਹੈ ਤੇਰੀ ਰਹਿਣੀ ਬਹਿਣੀ।

ਮੋਹਨ = ਹੇ ਮੋਹਨ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ! ਅਨੂਪ = ਸੋਹਣੇ। ਨਿਰਾਲੀ = ਅਨੋਖੀ, ਵੱਖਰੀ ਕਿਸਮ ਦੀ।
ਹੇ ਮੋਹਨ! ਤੇਰੀ ਸਿਫ਼ਤ-ਸਾਲਾਹ ਦੇ ਬਚਨ ਸੋਹਣੇ ਲੱਗਦੇ ਹਨ, ਤੇਰੀ ਚਾਲ (ਜਗਤ ਦੇ ਜੀਵਾਂ ਦੀ ਚਾਲ ਨਾਲੋਂ) ਵੱਖਰੀ ਹੈ।

The tempting creator, your utterances beyond praise and ways so wonderful

ਮੋਹਨ ਤੂੰ ਮਾਨਹਿ ਏਕੁ ਜੀ ਅਵਰ ਸਭ ਰਾਲੀ ॥

मोहन तूं मानहि एकु जी अवर सभ राली ॥

Mohan ṯūŉ mānėh ek jī avar sabẖ rālī.

O Mohan, you believe in the One. Everything else is dust to you.

ਹੇ ਮੋਹਨ, ਤੂੰ ਇਕ ਵਾਹਿਗੁਰੂ ਨੂੰ ਹੀ ਮੰਨਦਾ ਹੈਂ। ਤੇਰੇ ਲਈ ਹੋਰ ਸਾਰਾ ਕੁਝ ਖੇਹ ਦੇ ਤੁੱਲ ਹੈ।

ਤੂੰ = ਤੈਨੂੰ। {ਨੋਟ: ਲਫ਼ਜ਼ 'ਤੂੰ' 'ਤੈਨੂੰ' ਦੇ ਅਰਥ ਵਿਚ ਅਨੇਕਾਂ ਵਾਰੀ ਵਰਤਿਆ ਮਿਲਦਾ ਹੈ। ਵੰਨਗੀ ਮਾਤ੍ਰ ਵੇਖੋ: 'ਜਿਨਿ ਤੂੰ ਸਾਜਿ ਸਵਾਰਿਆ' (ਸਿਰੀ ਰਾਗ ਮ: ੫, ਪੰਨਾ ੫੧), 'ਜਿਨ ਤੂੰ ਸੇਵਿਆ ਭਾਉ ਕਰਿ' (ਸਿਰੀ ਰਾਗ ਮ: ੫, ਪੰਨਾ ੫੨), 'ਗੁਰਮਤਿ ਤੂੰ ਸਲਾਹਣਾ' (ਸਿਰੀ ਰਾਗ ਮ: ੧, ਪੰਨਾ ੬੧), 'ਜਿਨ ਤੂੰ ਜਾਤਾ' (ਮਾਝ ਮ: ੫, ਪੰਨਾ ੧੦੦), 'ਤਿਸੁ ਕੁਰਬਾਨੀ ਜਿਨਿ ਤੂੰ ਸੁਣਿਆ' (ਮਾਝ ਮ: ੫, ਪੰਨਾ ੧੦੨), 'ਗੁਰ ਪਰਸਾਦੀ ਤੂੰ ਪਾਵਣਿਆ' (ਮਾਝ ਮ: ੫, ਪੰਨਾ ੧੩੦), 'ਜਿਨਿ ਤੂੰ ਸਾਜਿ ਸਵਾਰਿ ਸੀਗਾਰਿਆ' (ਸੁਖਮਨੀ ਮ: ੫, ਪੰਨਾ ੨੬੬)}।
ਹੇ ਮੋਹਨ ਜੀ! (ਸਾਰੇ ਜੀਵ) ਸਿਰਫ਼ ਤੈਨੂੰ ਹੀ (ਸਦਾ ਕਾਇਮ ਰਹਿਣ ਵਾਲਾ) ਮੰਨਦੇ ਹਨ, ਹੋਰ ਸਾਰੀ ਸ੍ਰਿਸ਼ਟੀ ਨਾਸ-ਵੰਤ ਹੈ।

The tempting creator, you believe in one and rest is all destructible

Quote:

ਮਾਨਹਿ ਤ ਏਕੁ ਅਲੇਖੁ ਠਾਕੁਰੁ ਜਿਨਹਿ ਸਭ ਕਲ ਧਾਰੀਆ ॥

मानहि त एकु अलेखु ठाकुरु जिनहि सभ कल धारीआ ॥

Mānėh ṯa ek alekẖ ṯẖākur jinėh sabẖ kal ḏẖārī▫ā.

You adore the One Lord, the Unknowable Lord and Master; His Power gives Support to all.

ਤੂੰ ਇਕ ਲੇਖੇ ਪੱਤੇ ਤੋਂ ਉਚੇਰੇ ਸਾਹਿਬ ਦੀ ਉਪਾਸ਼ਨਾ ਕਰਦਾ ਹੈਂ ਜੋ ਆਪਣੀ ਅਪਾਰ ਸ਼ਕਤੀ ਰਾਹੀਂ ਸਾਰੇ ਆਲਮ ਨੂੰ ਆਸਰਾ ਦੇ ਰਿਹਾ ਹੈ।

ਮਾਨਹਿ = (ਸਾਰੇ ਜੀਵ) ਮੰਨਦੇ ਹਨ। ਰਾਲੀ = ਮਿੱਟੀ, ਨਾਸਵੰਤ। ਜਿਨਹਿ = ਜਿਸ ਨੇ। ਕਲ = ਸੱਤਾ, ਤਾਕਤ।
ਹੇ ਮੋਹਨ! ਸਿਰਫ਼ ਤੈਨੂੰ ਇਕ ਨੂੰ (ਅਸਥਿਰ) ਮੰਨਦੇ ਹਨ-ਸਿਰਫ਼ ਤੈਨੂੰ-ਜਿਸ ਦਾ ਸਰੂਪ ਬਿਆਨ ਨਹੀਂ ਕੀਤਾ ਜਾ ਸਕਦਾ, ਜੋ ਤੂੰ ਸਭ ਦਾ ਪਾਲਣਹਾਰ ਹੈਂ, ਤੇ ਜਿਸ ਤੈਂ ਨੇ ਸਾਰੀ ਸ੍ਰਿਸ਼ਟੀ ਵਿਚ ਆਪਣੀ ਸੱਤਾ ਵਰਤਾਈ ਹੋਈ ਹੈ।

Creator beleiving in one and so describing, the one supporting all so created

Quote:

ਤੁਧੁ ਬਚਨਿ ਗੁਰ ਕੈ ਵਸਿ ਕੀਆ ਆਦਿ ਪੁਰਖੁ ਬਨਵਾਰੀਆ ॥

तुधु बचनि गुर कै वसि कीआ आदि पुरखु बनवारीआ ॥

Ŧuḏẖ bacẖan gur kai vas kī▫ā āḏ purakẖ banvārī▫ā.

Through the Guru's Word, you have captured the heart of the Primal Being, the Lord of the World.

ਗੁਰਾਂ ਦੇ ਉਪਦੇਸ਼ ਦੁਆਰਾ ਤੂੰ ਮੁੱਢਲੀ ਵਿਅਕਤੀ ਸਿਰਜਣਹਾਰ ਦੇ ਦਿਲ ਨੂੰ ਜਿੱਤ ਲਿਆ ਹੈ।

ਤੁਧੁ = ਤੈਨੂੰ। ਬਚਨਿ = ਬਚਨ ਦੀ ਰਾਹੀਂ। ਬਨਵਾਰੀਆ = ਜਗਤ ਦਾ ਮਾਲਕ।
ਹੇ ਮੋਹਨ! ਤੈਨੂੰ (ਤੇਰੇ ਭਗਤਾਂ ਨੇ) ਗੁਰੂ ਦੇ ਬਚਨ ਦੀ ਰਾਹੀਂ (ਪਿਆਰ-) ਵੱਸ ਕੀਤਾ ਹੋਇਆ ਹੈ, ਤੂੰ ਸਭ ਦਾ ਮੁੱਢ ਹੈਂ, ਤੂੰ ਸਰਬ-ਵਿਆਪਕ ਹੈਂ, ਤੂੰ ਸਾਰੇ ਜਗਤ ਦਾ ਮਾਲਕ ਹੈਂ।

In the teachings of the creator one so encompasses the creator from the beginning

ਤੂੰ ਆਪਿ ਚਲਿਆ ਆਪਿ ਰਹਿਆ ਆਪਿ ਸਭ ਕਲ ਧਾਰੀਆ ॥

तूं आपि चलिआ आपि रहिआ आपि सभ कल धारीआ ॥

Ŧūŉ āp cẖali▫ā āp rahi▫ā āp sabẖ kal ḏẖārī▫ā.

You Yourself move, and You Yourself stand still; You Yourself support the whole creation.

ਮੇਰੇ ਮਾਲਕ ਤੂੰ ਖੁਦ ਹੀ ਟੁਰਦਾ ਹੈਂ, ਖੁਦ ਹੀ ਅਡੋਲ ਖਲੋਦਾਂ ਹੈ ਅਤੇ ਖੁਦ ਹੀ ਸਾਰੀ ਬਨਾਵਟ ਨੂੰ ਥੰਮ੍ਹ ਰਿਹਾ ਹੈਂ।

ਹੇ ਮੋਹਨ! (ਸਾਰੇ ਜੀਵਾਂ ਵਿਚ ਮੌਜੂਦ ਹੋਣ ਕਰਕੇ) ਤੂੰ ਆਪ ਹੀ (ਉਮਰ ਭੋਗ ਕੇ ਜਗਤ ਤੋਂ) ਚਲਾ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਹੈਂ, ਫਿਰ ਭੀ ਤੂੰ ਹੀ ਆਪ ਸਦਾ ਕਾਇਮ ਰਹਿਣ ਵਾਲਾ ਹੈਂ, ਤੂੰ ਹੀ ਜਗਤ ਵਿਚ ਆਪਣੀ ਸੱਤਾ ਵਰਤਾਈ ਹੋਈ ਹੈ।

You by self moving, by self staying and by self creating all that is.

Quote:

ਬਿਨਵੰਤਿ ਨਾਨਕ ਪੈਜ ਰਾਖਹੁ ਸਭ ਸੇਵਕ ਸਰਨਿ ਤੁਮਾਰੀਆ ॥੨॥

बिनवंति नानक पैज राखहु सभ सेवक सरनि तुमारीआ ॥२॥

Binvanṯ Nānak paij rākẖo sabẖ sevak saran ṯumārī▫ā. ||2||

Prays Nanak, please preserve my honor; all Your servants seek the Protection of Your Sanctuary. ||2||

ਨਾਨਕ ਬੇਨਤੀ ਕਰਦਾ ਹੈ, ਮੇਰੀ ਪੱਤ-ਆਬਰੂ ਦੀ ਰਖਵਾਲੀ ਕਰ। ਤੇਰੇ ਸਾਰੇ ਗੋਲੇ ਤੇਰੀ ਪਨਾਹ ਲੋੜਦੇ ਹਨ।

ਪੈਜ = ਲਾਜ ॥੨॥
ਨਾਨਕ ਬੇਨਤੀ ਕਰਦਾ ਹੈ-(ਆਪਣੇ ਸੇਵਕਾਂ ਦੀ ਤੂੰ ਆਪ ਹੀ) ਲਾਜ ਰੱਖਦਾ ਹੈਂ, ਸਾਰੇ ਸੇਵਕ-ਭਗਤ ਤੇਰੀ ਸਰਨ ਪੈਂਦੇ ਹਨ ॥੨॥

Nanak prays to be saved the honor, all the humble servants at your footsteps

ਮੋਹਨ ਤੁਧੁ ਸਤਸੰਗਤਿ ਧਿਆਵੈ ਦਰਸ ਧਿਆਨਾ ॥

मोहन तुधु सतसंगति धिआवै दरस धिआना ॥

Mohan ṯuḏẖ saṯsangaṯ ḏẖi▫āvai ḏaras ḏẖi▫ānā.

O Mohan, the Sat Sangat, the True Congregation, meditates on you; they meditate on the Blessed Vision of Your Darshan.

ਹੇ ਮਨ ਨੂੰ ਵੱਸ ਕਰਨ ਵਾਲੇ ਸਾਧ ਸੰਗਤ ਤੈਨੂੰ ਸਿਮਰਦੀ ਹੈ ਅਤੇ ਤੇਰਾ ਦੀਦਾਰ ਦੇਖਣ ਦਾ ਖਿਆਲ ਧਾਰੀ ਬੈਠੀ ਹੋਈ ਹੈ।

ਤੁਧੁ = ਤੈਨੂੰ।
ਹੇ ਮੋਹਨ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ! ਤੈਨੂੰ ਸਾਧ ਸੰਗਤ ਧਿਆਉਂਦੀ ਹੈ, ਤੇਰੇ ਦਰਸਨ ਦਾ ਧਿਆਨ ਧਰਦੀ ਹੈ।

The tempting creator, the truthful congregation contemplates so visualizing in thoughts

Quote:

ਮੋਹਨ ਜਮੁ ਨੇੜਿ ਨ ਆਵੈ ਤੁਧੁ ਜਪਹਿ ਨਿਦਾਨਾ ॥

मोहन जमु नेड़ि न आवै तुधु जपहि निदाना ॥

Mohan jam neṛ na āvai ṯuḏẖ jāpėh niḏānā.

O Mohan, the Messenger of Death does not even approach those who meditate on You, at the last moment.

ਮੌਤ ਦਾ ਫਰਿਸ਼ਤਾ ਉਸ ਦੇ ਲਾਗੇ ਨਹੀਂ ਲਗਦਾ, ਜੋ ਅਖੀਰ ਦੇ ਮੁਹਤ ਤੈਨੂੰ ਯਾਦ ਕਰਦਾ ਹੈ, ਹੇ ਚਿੱਤ ਚੁਰਾਉਣਹਾਰ!

ਮੋਹਨ = ਹੇ ਮੋਹਨ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ। ਨਿਦਾਨਾ = ਅੰਤ ਨੂੰ।
ਹੇ ਮੋਹਨ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ! ਜੇਹੜੇ ਜੀਵ ਤੈਨੂੰ ਜਪਦੇ ਹਨ, ਅੰਤ ਵੇਲੇ ਮੌਤ ਦਾ ਸਹਮ ਉਹਨਾਂ ਦੇ ਨੇੜੇ ਨਹੀਂ ਢੁਕਦਾ।

The tempting creator, the demon of death does not come near when to the end one contemplates upon you

Quote:

ਜਮਕਾਲੁ ਤਿਨ ਕਉ ਲਗੈ ਨਾਹੀ ਜੋ ਇਕ ਮਨਿ ਧਿਆਵਹੇ ॥

जमकालु तिन कउ लगै नाही जो इक मनि धिआवहे ॥

Jamkāl ṯin ka▫o lagai nāhī jo ik man ḏẖi▫āvhe.

The Messenger of Death cannot touch those who meditate on You single-mindedly.

ਮੌਤ ਦਾ ਦੂਤ ਉਸ ਨੂੰ ਛੂੰਹਦਾ ਤੱਕ ਨਹੀਂ ਜੋ ਇਕ ਚਿੱਤ ਨਾਲ ਸਾਹਿਬ ਦਾ ਸਿਮਰਨ ਕਰਦਾ ਹੈ।

ਲਗੈ ਨਾਹੀ = ਪੋਹ ਨਹੀਂ ਸਕਦਾ। ਇਕ ਮਨਿ = ਇਕਾਗਰ ਮਨ ਨਾਲ। ਧਿਆਵਹੇ = ਧਿਆਵਹਿ, ਧਿਆਉਂਦੇ ਹਨ।
ਜੇਹੜੇ ਤੈਨੂੰ ਇਕਾਗਰ ਮਨ ਨਾਲ ਧਿਆਉਂਦੇ ਹਨ, ਮੌਤ ਦਾ ਸਹਮ ਉਹਨਾਂ ਨੂੰ ਪੋਹ ਨਹੀਂ ਸਕਦਾ (ਆਤਮਕ ਮੌਤ ਉਹਨਾਂ ਉਤੇ ਪ੍ਰਭਾਵ ਨਹੀਂ ਪਾ ਸਕਦੀ)।

The one’s contemplating you in mind don’t get touched by the demon of death

Quote:

ਮਨਿ ਬਚਨਿ ਕਰਮਿ ਜਿ ਤੁਧੁ ਅਰਾਧਹਿ ਸੇ ਸਭੇ ਫਲ ਪਾਵਹੇ ॥

मनि बचनि करमि जि तुधु अराधहि से सभे फल पावहे ॥

Man bacẖan karam jė ṯuḏẖ arāḏẖėh se sabẖe fal pāvhe.

Those who worship and adore You in thought, word and deed, obtain all fruits and rewards.

ਜੋ ਆਪਣੇ ਖਿਆਲ ਸ਼ਬਦ ਅਤੇ ਅਮਰ ਰਾਹੀਂ ਹੇ ਮਾਲਕ! ਤੈਨੂੰ ਧਿਆਉਂਦਾ ਹੈ, ਉਹ ਸਾਰੇ ਮੇਵੇ ਪਾ ਲੈਂਦਾ ਹੈ।

ਮਨਿ = ਮਨ ਦੀ ਰਾਹੀਂ। ਬਚਨਿ = ਬਚਨ ਦੀ ਰਾਹੀਂ। ਕਰਮਿ = ਕਰਮ ਦੀ ਰਾਹੀਂ। ਪਾਵਹੇ = ਪਾਵਹਿ, ਪਾਂਦੇ ਹਨ।
ਜੇਹੜੇ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਆਪਣੇ ਮਨ ਦੀ ਰਾਹੀਂ, ਉਹ ਆਪਣੇ ਬੋਲ ਦੀ ਰਾਹੀਂ, ਆਪਣੇ ਕਰਮ ਦੀ ਰਾਹੀਂ, ਤੈਨੂੰ ਯਾਦ ਕਰਦੇ ਰਹਿੰਦੇ ਹਨ, ਉਹ ਸਾਰੇ (ਮਨ-ਇੱਛਤ) ਫਲ ਪ੍ਰਾਪਤ ਕਰ ਲੈਂਦੇ ਹਨ।

Words embedded in mind, the acts in consonance carried out, so find all the desired results

Quote:

ਮਲ ਮੂਤ ਮੂੜ ਜਿ ਮੁਗਧ ਹੋਤੇ ਸਿ ਦੇਖਿ ਦਰਸੁ ਸੁਗਿਆਨਾ ॥

मल मूत मूड़ जि मुगध होते सि देखि दरसु सुगिआना ॥

Mal mūṯ mūṛ jė mugaḏẖ hoṯe sė ḏekẖ ḏaras sugi▫ānā.

Those who are foolish and stupid, filthy with urine and manure, become all-knowing upon gaining the Blessed Vision of Your Darshan.

ਜੋ ਗੰਦਗੀ ਤੇ ਪਿਸ਼ਾਬ ਵਰਗੇ ਗੰਦੇ ਮੂਰਖ ਅਤੇ ਬੇਵਕੂਫ ਹਨ ਉਹ ਤੇਰਾ ਦਰਸ਼ਨ ਵੇਖ ਕੇ ਸਰੇਸ਼ਟ ਬ੍ਰਹਿਮਬੇਤਾ ਹੋ ਜਾਂਦੇ ਹਨ।

ਮਲ ਮੂਤ = ਗੰਦੇ, ਵਿਕਾਰੀ। ਜਿ = ਜੇਹੜੇ ਮਨੁੱਖ। ਸਿ = ਉਹ। ਦੇਖਿ = ਵੇਖ ਕੇ। ਸੁਗਿਆਨਾ = ਸਿਆਣੇ।
ਹੇ ਸਰਬ-ਵਿਆਪਕ! ਹੇ ਭਗਵਾਨ! ਉਹ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਭੀ ਤੇਰਾ ਦਰਸਨ ਕਰ ਕੇ ਉੱਚੀ ਸੂਝ ਵਾਲੇ ਹੋ ਜਾਂਦੇ ਹਨ ਜੋ (ਪਹਿਲਾਂ) ਗੰਦੇ-ਕੁਕਰਮੀ ਤੇ ਮਹਾ ਮੂਰਖ ਹੁੰਦੇ ਹਨ।

One’s residing in defecation and urine even become wise in so visualizing

Quote:

ਬਿਨਵੰਤਿ ਨਾਨਕ ਰਾਜੁ ਨਿਹਚਲੁ ਪੂਰਨ ਪੁਰਖ ਭਗਵਾਨਾ ॥੩॥

बिनवंति नानक राजु निहचलु पूरन पुरख भगवाना ॥३॥

Binvanṯ Nānak rāj nihcẖal pūran purakẖ bẖagvānā. ||3||

Prays Nanak, Your Kingdom is Eternal, O Perfect Primal Lord God. ||3||

ਨਾਨਕ ਪ੍ਰਾਰਥਨਾਂ ਕਰਦਾ ਹੈ, ਹੇ ਮੇਰੇ ਪਰੀਪੂਰਨ ਵਾਹਿਗੁਰੂ ਸੁਆਮੀ! ਸਦੀਵੀ ਸਥਿਰ ਹੈ, ਤੇਰੀ ਪਾਤਿਸ਼ਾਹੀ।

ਪੂਰਨ ਪੁਰਖ = ਹੇ ਪੂਰਨ ਸਰਬ-ਵਿਆਪਕ! {ਬਾਬਾ ਮੋਹਨ ਜੀ ਨੂੰ ਇਉਂ ਸੰਬੋਧਨ ਨਹੀਂ ਕੀਤਾ ਜਾ ਸਕਦਾ ਸੀ} ॥੩॥
ਨਾਨਕ ਬੇਨਤੀ ਕਰਦਾ ਹੈ-ਹੇ ਮੋਹਨ! ਤੇਰਾ ਰਾਜ ਸਦਾ ਕਾਇਮ ਰਹਿਣ ਵਾਲਾ ਹੈ ॥੩॥

Nanak prays the kingdom eternal, of the complete persona creator

Quote:

ਮੋਹਨ ਤੂੰ ਸੁਫਲੁ ਫਲਿਆ ਸਣੁ ਪਰਵਾਰੇ ॥

मोहन तूं सुफलु फलिआ सणु परवारे ॥

Mohan ṯūŉ sufal fali▫ā saṇ parvāre.

O Mohan, you have blossomed forth with the flower of your family.

ਹੇ ਮੋਹਨ! ਤੂੰ ਆਪਣੇ ਆਰ-ਪਰਵਾਰ ਸਹਿਤ ਲਾਭਦਾਇਕ ਤਰੀਕੇ ਨਾਲ ਪ੍ਰਫੁਲਤ ਹੋਇਆ ਹੈਂ।

ਮੋਹਨ = ਹੇ ਮੋਹਨ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ! ਸੁਫਲੁ = ਫਲ ਵਾਲਾ, ਬਾਗ-ਪਰਵਾਰ ਵਾਲਾ, ਜਗਤ-ਰੂਪ ਪਰਵਾਰ ਵਾਲਾ। ਸਣੁ = ਸਮੇਤ। ਸਣੁ ਪਰਵਾਰੇ = ਪਰਵਾਰ ਸਮੇਤ ਹੈਂ, ਬੇਅੰਤ ਜੀਵਾਂ ਦਾ ਪਿਤਾ ਹੈਂ।
ਹੇ ਮੋਹਨ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ! ਤੂੰ ਬੜਾ ਸੋਹਣਾ ਫਲਿਆ ਹੋਇਆ ਹੈਂ, ਤੂੰ ਬੜੇ ਵੱਡੇ ਪਰਵਾਰ ਵਾਲਾ ਹੈਂ।

The tempting creator, you so blossomed with the family

Quote:

ਮੋਹਨ ਪੁਤ੍ਰ ਮੀਤ ਭਾਈ ਕੁਟੰਬ ਸਭਿ ਤਾਰੇ ॥

मोहन पुत्र मीत भाई कुट्मब सभि तारे ॥

Mohan puṯar mīṯ bẖā▫ī kutamb sabẖ ṯāre.

O Mohan, your children, friends, siblings and relatives have all been saved.

ਹੇ ਮੋਹਨ! ਆਪਣੇ ਸੁਤ ਮਿੱਤਰ, ਭਰਾ ਅਤੇ ਸਕਾ-ਸੈਨ ਸਾਰੇ ਤੂੰ ਬਚਾ ਲਏ ਹਨ।

ਹੇ ਮੋਹਨ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ! ਪੁੱਤਰਾਂ ਭਰਾਵਾਂ ਮਿੱਤਰਾਂ ਵਾਲੇ ਵੱਡੇ ਵੱਡੇ ਟੱਬਰ ਤੂੰ ਸਾਰੇ ਦੇ ਸਾਰੇ (ਸੰਸਾਰ-ਸਮੁੰਦਰ ਤੋਂ) ਪਾਰ ਲੰਘਾ ਦੇਂਦਾ ਹੈਂ।

The tempting creator, you so salvage all of sons, friends and clans

ਤਾਰਿਆ ਜਹਾਨੁ ਲਹਿਆ ਅਭਿਮਾਨੁ ਜਿਨੀ ਦਰਸਨੁ ਪਾਇਆ ॥

तारिआ जहानु लहिआ अभिमानु जिनी दरसनु पाइआ ॥

Ŧāri▫ā jahān lahi▫ā abẖimān jinī ḏarsan pā▫i▫ā.

You save those who give up their egotistical pride, upon gaining the Blessed Vision of Your Darshan.

ਤੂੰ ਉਹਨਾਂ ਪੁਰਸ਼ਾਂ ਦਾ ਵੀ ਪਾਰ ਉਤਾਰ ਕਰ ਦਿੱਤਾ ਹੈ, ਜਿਨ੍ਹਾਂ ਨੇ ਤੇਰਾ ਦੀਦਾਰ ਪਾ ਕੇ ਆਪਣਾ ਹੰਕਾਰ ਛੱਡ ਦਿੱਤਾ ਹੈ।

ਤਾਰਿਆ ਜਹਾਨੁ = ਤੂੰ ਸਾਰਾ ਜਹਾਨ ਤਾਰ ਦਿੱਤਾ {ਬਾਬਾ ਮੋਹਨ ਜੀ ਨਹੀਂ, ਇਹ ਮੋਹਨ-ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਹੀ ਹੋ ਸਕਦਾ ਹੈ}।
ਹੇ ਮੋਹਨ! ਜਿਨ੍ਹਾਂ ਨੇ ਤੇਰਾ ਦਰਸਨ ਕੀਤਾ, ਉਹਨਾਂ ਦੇ ਅੰਦਰੋਂ ਤੂੰ ਅਹੰਕਾਰ ਦੂਰ ਕਰ ਦਿੱਤਾ। ਤੂੰ ਸਾਰੇ ਜਹਾਨ ਨੂੰ ਹੀ ਤਾਰਨ ਦੀ ਸਮਰੱਥਾ ਵਾਲਾ ਹੈਂ।

World salvaged, the ego removed, those who so visualized

ਜਿਨੀ ਤੁਧਨੋ ਧੰਨੁ ਕਹਿਆ ਤਿਨ ਜਮੁ ਨੇੜਿ ਨ ਆਇਆ ॥

जिनी तुधनो धंनु कहिआ तिन जमु नेड़ि न आइआ ॥

Jinī ṯuḏẖno ḏẖan kahi▫ā ṯin jam neṛ na ā▫i▫ā.

The Messenger of Death does not even approach those who call you 'blessed'.

ਮੌਤ ਦਾ ਦੂਤ ਉਹਨਾਂ ਦੇ ਨੇੜੇ ਨਹੀਂ ਢੁਕਦਾ ਜਿਹੜੇ ਤੈਨੂੰ ਕੀਰਤੀਮਾਨ ਆਖਦੇ ਹਨ।

ਹੇ ਮੋਹਨ! ਜਿਨ੍ਹਾਂ (ਵਡ-ਭਾਗੀਆਂ) ਨੇ ਤੇਰੀ ਸਿਫ਼ਤ-ਸਾਲਾਹ ਕੀਤੀ, ਆਤਮਕ ਮੌਤ ਉਹਨਾਂ ਦੇ ਨੇੜੇ ਨਹੀਂ ਢੁਕਦੀ।

The ones’s so speaking of the virtuous values, the demon of death does not come near such

ਬੇਅੰਤ ਗੁਣ ਤੇਰੇ ਕਥੇ ਨ ਜਾਹੀ ਸਤਿਗੁਰ ਪੁਰਖ ਮੁਰਾਰੇ ॥

बेअंत गुण तेरे कथे न जाही सतिगुर पुरख मुरारे ॥

Be▫anṯ guṇ ṯere kathe na jāhī saṯgur purakẖ murāre.

Your Virtues are unlimited - they cannot be described, O True Guru, Primal Being, Destroyer of demons.

ਅਨੰਤ ਹਨ ਤੇਰੀਆਂ ਚੰਗਿਆਈਆਂ, ਉਹ ਬਿਆਨ ਕੀਤੀਆਂ ਨਹੀਂ ਜਾ ਸਕਦੀਆਂ। ਹੇ ਵਾਹਿਗੁਰੂ ਸੁਆਮੀ! ਸੱਚੇ ਗੁਰੂ ਜੀ।

ਹੇ ਸਭ ਤੋਂ ਵੱਡੇ! ਸਰਬ-ਵਿਆਪਕ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ! ਤੇਰੇ ਗੁਣ ਬੇਅੰਤ ਹਨ, ਬਿਆਨ ਨਹੀਂ ਕੀਤੇ ਜਾ ਸਕਦੇ।

Limitless virtues that cannot be described, the supreme eternal creator

ਬਿਨਵੰਤਿ ਨਾਨਕ ਟੇਕ ਰਾਖੀ ਜਿਤੁ ਲਗਿ ਤਰਿਆ ਸੰਸਾਰੇ ॥੪॥੨॥

बिनवंति नानक टेक राखी जितु लगि तरिआ संसारे ॥४॥२॥

Binvanṯ Nānak tek rākẖī jiṯ lag ṯari▫ā sansāre. ||4||2||

Prays Nanak, Yours is that Anchor, holding onto which the whole world is saved. ||4||2||

PS: Bhai Manmohan Singh ji did not do English translation. He provided meaning and his description of the same for Gurbani in Sri Guru Granth Sahib Ji. Dr. Sant Singh Khalsa ji did a translation that appears mostly based on Bhai Manmohan Singh ji's Teeka. So this two step process with essential total dependency upon someone's meanings can potentially cause issues.

So when people ask me to do so with Prof. Sahib Singh ji's work, I refuse. Instead, I read Bhai Manmohan Singh ji's work, Prof. Sahib Singh ji's work and read the Gurbani by self and my understanding develops out of these three aspects. I am as human as any and errors are likely in what I post and I try to improve.

Some Ragis and pracharak based on bhagat mal stories, refer Mohan to Baba Mohan son of Guru Amardas. They interpret that Guru Arjan Dev Ji went to the place of Baba Mohan and begged from him the pothi which according to these stories was in the custody of Baba Mohan.

Logically speaking, pothi was so dear to our Gurus that they will never part away with it irrespective of any situation. And our Gurus were not chamcha that in order to get back they will sing song in favor of Baba Mohan which is against the ideology of Sri Guru Granth Sahib Ji. Therefore, Mohan is the descriptive name of God.

Mohan is a sanskrit word which can mean delightful, charming and attractive. So that word is obviously being used to describe that attribute of god, not a person! It is like using the word precious, some people in english call their children by that name it does not really mean that they are precious only that is a name attributed to them! (Will precious to the parents maybe) Like Singh means lion, it does not make you an animal!

Thanks everyone for your comments. Thanks Parma ji for providing the etymology of the word 'Mohan' - I didn't know it meant 'fascinating' etc so that does indeed change the focus of the shabad.

Ambarsaria ji, I'm not brave enough to share my understanding of shabads yet. I'm still in the groundwork phase where I'm learning around them myself, if I provide too much of my own thoughts in a public forum I think I run the risk of spreading misinterpretation.
