| | | | | What is the prayer ? What is the "prayer" that one recites while taking a very early shower transliterated into English with English Translation? Thanks in advance. *

| | | | | Re: What is the prayer ? Sa'ad ji
I think it would be a very soggy start to the day. That is why it is not a good idea to take a shower and pray at the same time using transliteration and English translation. Better if possible to wait or even better commit the prayer to heart. Reference:: Sikh Philosophy Network http://www.sikhphilosophy.net/interfaith-dialogues/25000-what-is-the-prayer.html
Now to be serious about your question:
There is another way to look at it. The "prayer" we say in the shower is unvoiced in many ways. It is the same "prayer" when we close our eyes at night and given into sleep. It the same "prayer" when we walk out the door, get in the auto, drive off to school or to work, get on a bus, go to our desk and start working. It is a "prayer" of faith that we are supported by Akaal. it is a "prayer" of hope without words, and we are thankful for another day. We keep on going until it is our time to stop. |

Here is a prayer to say before sleep that comforts the heart and cools the mind. It erases doubt and fear. It asserts the protection of God over all his creation, though we may not comprehend His plan, we trust nonetheless that He comprehends us and holds us close. It is just part of the larger hymn Sohilaa. ਰਾਗੁ ਗਉੜੀ ਪੂਰਬੀ ਮਹਲਾ ੫ ॥

It can be very helpful to say this prayer any time of the day when we are troubled. There is no rule that it must be said only at night. | | The following members appreciate Narayanjot Kaur Ji for the above message. | |

I express my prayers in English and Hebrew all day long; however, I am going to start getting up at 3:00 AM and take a cold shower: Ishnaan Therapy . Perhaps, I misunderstood this practice as being a normal part of Sikh Life. |

Washing up -- usually a shower -- at 3 am prior to morning prayers is a typical sadhana in some Sikh traditions. It is common among 3HO or White Sikhs, and other traditions also. The shower is not a requirement. The early morning hour is referred to as Amrit Vela and is the time for the recitation of Japji Sahib, and other prayers according to one's tradition. Prayers can also include Shabad Hazare and Jaap Sahib. There are some variations among people. Not everyone is bound to the cold shower, though washing your face and hands is a good idea because he gets you started and generally feeling clean is feeling better and helps one to focus. |

One who calls himself a Sikh of the Guru, the True Guru, shall rise in the early morning hours and meditate on the Lord's Name.
Upon arising early in the morning, he is to bathe, and cleanse himself in the pool of nectar.
Following the Instructions of the Guru, he is to chant the Name of the Lord, Har, Har. All sins, misdeeds and negativity shall be erased.
Then, at the rising of the sun, he is to sing Gurbani; whether sitting down or standing up, he is to meditate on the Lord's Name.
One who meditates on my Lord, Har, Har, with every breath and every morsel of food - that GurSikh becomes pleasing to the Guru's Mind.
That person, unto whom my Lord and Master is kind and compassionate - upon that GurSikh, the Guru's Teachings are bestowed.
Servant Nanak begs for the dust of the feet of that GurSikh, who himself chants the Naam, and inspires others to chant it. ||2||

| | | | | Re: What is the prayer ? Thank you all for your kind instructions. I have the software program punjabi guru, but it isn't helping me to learn the words I need. All of your posts were helpful. I have stopped cutting my hair because of some of the sikh videos on youtube which made sense to me. I hope to continue to learn more and more about sikhism.
