Govt gets May 18 deadline to stop discharge of dirty water in Kala Sanghia drain Jalandhar After the failure of the official machinery, the people of villages situated along the Kala Sanghia drain, religious leaders, panchayat members, community leaders, NGOs and political leaders from various parties, with environmentalist Baba Balbir Singh Seechewal, have announced to block the flow of dirty water in the drain from May 18. The announcement was made in the presence of Punjab Revenue Minister Ajit Singh Kohar at a big gathering at Gurudwara Tahli Sahib on Sunday. Village heads, panchayat members and other community leaders and women from over two dozen villages participated in the meeting. It was announced that May 18 would be the deadline for the official machinery to check the flow of dirty water into the drain failing which it would be blocked. Due to the flow of dirty water in the drain, people of various villages located on its either sides are suffering from several diseases and living in unsanitary conditions. Religious leaders, including Baba Seechewal and Sant Daya Singh, said their fight to save these thousands of lives would continue till the people did not get justice. They said the official machinery, including the Punjab Pollution Control Board, had not been doing anything to check the pollution in natural water resources and even the laws meant for it were not being implemented. Kohar, meanwhile, said he would meet Chief Minister Parkash Singh Badal and brief him about the condition. SGPC member Shingarea Singh Lohian and Congress leaders Brij Bhupinder Singh Lalli and Rajanbir Singh were also present at the meeting. The locals said they had already suffered a lot and would not mind facing any confrontation from the official machinery on May 18.
