This is what is needed but for this to happen, it is the parents’ duty to narrow the so called generation gap rather than creating gorges in between which is the norm, especially in the western culture. Building bridges with our kids and others is what Gurbani teaches us to do. Technology is a double edged sword and we as parents must have the responsibility that its edge that the kids have is blunted by us. This problem of the generational gap is the main plague that creates these unfortunate events. In the western culture, kids are kicked out of their homes when they turn 18 and many of them look forward to turning 18 to leave theirs. What does the latter part above show? It shows that even this poor 12 year old daughter of two parents could not find “Mum” and “Dad” in her own household but just mother and father. There is a big distinction in this. Mum and Dad make sure that dialogue doors are open from the very beginning from their end. The things can be worse in our culture because of the hierarchical ladder where the older is always right and parents claim to know better than their kids which make them(parents) the worst listeners. They refuse to listen much less hear their kids, sad to say. Allow me to re-tell my personal experience. When Trimaan was in High School, which is btw ranked #70 among the 500 best schools in the US. This means that only the kids from “good families” with the competitive edge would be there. Well, it seemed like that. Then one day, one of his friends with whom he used to play Xbox online with created an FB page that bullied him from all aspects for no reason. 100 other kids joined him in no time from his school and other schools. He came to me and showed me the page. I emailed the page to the Principal with the copy of a letter I had emailed to FB. The page was taken down the next day. The following day, I got the call from the Principal apologising for it and wanted to expel the student. I told Trimaan about it when I went to talk to her at her office with him. Trimaan did not want the kid to be expelled but only suspended. That kid and many others from different schools were suspended. Trimaan, by nature is very forgiving. He accepted the kid’s apology and they re-kindred their relationship and started playing Xbox again. No other incident took place against anyone either in that school. One month later, the Principal met me at the parents/ teachers meeting and thanked me for warning the school and after the incident they took extra actions for the same not to happen again. No parents have a manual about how to raise their kids. It is all on trial and error basis, and this is the very reason that we as parents should shrink the generation gap between us and our kids. It will pay dividends when we need them at certain age. In closing, allow me to repeat: Tejwant Singh
