[QUOTE="Gyani Jarnail Singh, post: 5625, member: 189"] Dear friend: As far as my understanding goes, the British maintained the Kingdom of Maharaja Ranjit Singh as a BUFFER between their land and the Marauding Afghans and Turks....leaving the Sikhs to fight and subdue these savages. The British had gone down to Afghanistan and returned bruised and battered..the Sikhs extended their borders up to the Khyber Pass in the west, up to Ladakh in the North and the Sutlej to the South...the Sikh princely States south of the sutlej were putting their own states first before SIKH by asking for British "protection" from Ranjit singh. Blocked from the South..Ranjit singh's forces went North West and East..as long as Ranjit was alive the Briiths left him alone even signing peace treaties with him..but once he was dead...palace intrigues and conspiracies..began. Most of the recently converted Hindu Dogras who had rapidly risen to become Prime Minister and Generals in the Sikh army went over to the British...Kashmir was given as a gift to one of them for helping to defeet the Sikhs.. Well nayway after the Punjab Sikh kingdom was annexed by Dalhousie, the Sikhs began a few half hearted attempts to fight back but soon gave up. What incensed them was the 18857 Indian Mutiny..coming just 7 years after Punjab fell. The Mutiny was organsied by the very same soldiers who had aided the Britidsh to defeat Punjab...and now they wwere trying to kickj out the British and reimpose MUGHULS as rulers of India. Sikhs had fought 200 years to oust the Mughals...so the SIKHS decided to stay away from this mutiny which soon collapsed. The British were grateful for the help by Sikhs and offerted the Sikhs positions in the Army...and Sikhs complied. Large numbers of sikhs joined the British Armies. Meanwhile in an attempt to Divide and rule the British covertly at first and then openly supported the CORRUPT HINDU PTRIESTS who had occupied Sikh Temples since the early 1700's due to Sikhs busy fighting guerilla wars agaisnt the Mughal Empire...after 200 years the Hindu Priestds began to regard the Temples as their own personal Properties passed on from father to son. Since the British supported the PRIESTS, they came into Open Conflict with the SIKHS...long arduous battles of Civil Liberites followed and the Gurdwaras became FREE one by one all over Punjab and the British Govt finally gave in by passing the SGPC Act giving the SIKHS control of all their Historical Gurdwaras...meanwhile many Sikhs continued to join the Army...and disregarded the Indian Congress ( Nehru-Gandhi_ call to REJECT the British Army.
