Scientific journals and lay newspapers alike, ran stories hinting at a new breakthrough in the field of Ophthalmology last year, after a paper published in a famous scientific journal Ophthalmology authored by Dr.Harminder Singh Dua, an Indian-British medical doctor and researcher, claimed the discovery of a previously not known layer of cornea, the transparent part of the front of eyeball. The layer has since been called Dua's layer, honouring Dr. Dua's efforts Using donor corneas, Dr. Dua's team had used the technique of introducing air bubbles in the layers of the cornea after peeling off the Descemet's membrane, a thin layer which separates the substance of cornea from its endothelium, thereby differentially separating the layers. Interestingly, in some samples, air bubbles did not dissipate despite the removal of Descemet's membrane and which on further inflation revelaed the existence of a previously unkown layer of cornea. While some skeptics dismissed the research, other researchers hailed the discovery and went on to say that textbooks on Ophthalmology would literally have to be re-written. The discovery of this new layer of cornea could have implications in the fields of corneal repair and surgery, and allow scientists to study cornea in a better way. Dr.Harminder Singh Dua(MBBS, DO, DO [Lond], MS, MNAMS, FRCS, FRCOphth., FEBO, MD, PhD) was born in Jalandhar, Punjab and did his graduation from Government Medical College and Hospital, Nagpur. He is the chair and professor of ophthalmology at University of Nottingham and is the head of the Division of Ophthalmology and Visual Sciences. Dua is also the co-editor in chief with Arun Singh, of the British Journal of Ophthalmology. He is president of EuCornea, the European society of Cornea and Ocular surface disease specialists. In March 2011 he was elected president of the Royal College of Ophthalmologists, UK. He has over 200 research publications, 20 published letters, and 14 book chapters to his credit.
