Re: ‘Patit’, and Indelibly Inked There are three main ideas threading through this discussion. One is about the stampede of the majority over the minority. Another is how a majority became a majority through crooked means. Another is the serious impact that crooked politics has had and will continue to have on the identity of Sikhs and Sikhi....serious impact. They are not separate ideas. Crooked means gave majority status to what was really a magpie's collection of completely different voting blocks with individual agendas, often unrelated. The connection amongst them is that they were organized well enough to buy Sikh identity from a political jatha. This jatha has the only agenda to be re-elected in preparation for the upcoming statewide elections and competition for political seats. Positioning: will it be BJP or Congress? It may have been a big mistake to take the SGPC election seriously and at face value. Was it important on its own as an election, as a purely Sikh matter, per the Gurdwara Act? Or does its real importance lie somewhere else, greasing the skids for a larger political drama next to unfold. I am not impressed by arguments that state that lions would lose elections in the jungle. If India is a democracy governed by the rule of law, then majorities have to be duly constituted. Not outcomes of flagrant manipulation of official institutions like the courts and election commissions. Otherwise elections are not part of a democratic process but a gangster's enterprise! Where is Poolka btw in all of this post mortem discussion? What good is the message of Hazare? You will have only good men tasking themselves to protect the interests of the common good. How reasonable is such an expectation? Knights of goodness put their questions to petty kings who have no other goal but to protect the influence they have accumulated over nearly 20 years. It is play acting. The play is bad drama. The script writers are very very clever. Once again Sikhs understand the characters but miss the plot. The play never was about Sikhs even though the stage was SGPC. If this is the case, next steps should take this into consideration.
