Of 50 ministerial portfolios in Punjab, 27 held by Badal family Friday, September, 21 2012 - 19:17 CHANDIGARH: Of about 50 ministerial portfolios in Punjab, 27 are held by the 4 members of the Badal family, while the rest 23 are shared by other 11 ministers. And all the important portfolios like Home, Power, Revenue, Agriculture, Food, Excise and Taxation are being held within the family. Actually it was not originally like that. The number of portfolios within the family increased after three ministers had to resign for different reasons and all these portfolios are now being taken care of by the Chief Minister himself. The ministers who had to resign and whose portfolios went under Chief Minister’s control include Tota Singh, who was the agriculture minister, Bibi Jagir Kaur who was the minister for Rural Water Supply and Sanitation, Defence Services Welfare and Pensioners' Welfare and Gulzar Singh Ranike who was the minister for Animal Husbandry and SC Welfare. This has necessitated a cabinet expansion at the earliest since the Chief Minister may not be able to hold so many portfolios which run into a dozen or so for so long. Of the 15 ministers who include the Chief Minister Parkash Singh Badal and the Deputy Chief Minister Sukhbir Badal four are from the family. Besides the two Badals, the other two are Adesh Partap Singh Kairon, son-in-law of the senior Badal, and Bikram Singh Majithia, brother-in-law of the Deputy Chief Minister. Currently, the Chief Minister holds the charge of the ministries of power, agriculture and general administration among others. His Deputy Chief Minister son holds the all important portfolios of Home, Housing, Excise and Taxation, Sports and Youth Services Welfare, Aviation and Governance Reforms. Adesh Partap Singh Kairon holds the portfolios of Food and Civil Supplies, Food Processing and Information Technology. Bikram Singh Majithia again holds the portfolios of Revenue and Rehabilitation, Information and Public Relations, NRI Affairs and Non-Conventional Energy.
