Saharanpur: Curfew under Section 144 was clamped in Uttar Pradesh's Saharanpur on Saturday after clashes broke out between two groups in the area over land dispute. The violence has claimed two lives and as many as 15 people have been injured. Traffic on the national highway connecting Ambala was thrown out of gear as protestors went on the rampage. "Right now the condition of Saharanpur is being reviewed. Additional forces have been sent there. More officers are going there. As of now our priority is to take control of the situation," said Mukul Goel, ADG, Saharanpur. Over two dozen shops and vehicles were gutted. A dozen people have been arrested for inciting violence over the land dispute. Sources said the brawl began with a verbal spat over a gurdwara and some construction taking place adjacent to it. "A continuous monitoring of the situation in Saharanpur and Moradabad is being done by senior police and government officials," Principal Secretary (Information) Navneet Sehgal told PTI. "The CM has directed Principal Secretary (Home) to deal with the Saharanpur situation strictly. He has directed that there must be no laxity at any level and law and order must be maintained at any cost," he said. Meanwhile, Commissioner, Saharanpur, Tanveer Zafar Ali said that a policeman sustained bullet injury in the clashes and has been referred to PGI in a serious condition. Chief Secretary Alok Ranjan said that curfew has been clamped in three police stations and no one would be allowed to disturb law and order situation.
