June 22, 2010 Members of the Sikh community in Edmonton today unveiled a special display at City Hall celebrating the martyrdom of Guru Arjun Dev Ji. The display gives an insight into the life of the first Sikh martyr and the fifth Guru. The display is part of the City’s Celebrating our Faiths program – developed jointly with the Edmonton Interfaith Centre for Education and Action to create a greater awareness and understanding of the City’s diverse faith communities. The program seeks to educate City staff and citizens about Edmonton’s various faiths through displays at City Hall. Displays depicting different faiths are rotated on a regular basis. Since 2006, the Celebrating Our Faiths display in City Hall has featured over 15 different religions. In welcoming participants to City Hall, Councillor Ed Gibbons noted that Edmonton is a diverse community. “We believe that having different faith displays provides Edmontonians the opportunity to learn more about their neighbours.” Bikkar Randhawa of the Sikh community in Edmonton says, “We are thankful for the opportunity to share this display celebrating the martyrdom of Guru Arjun Dev Ji. We will continue to share his message that a faith should be for all people irrespective of castes, creeds, communities and cultures from whichever directions they may come.” The display celebrating the martyrdom of Guru Arjun Dev Ji will run until July 9. All Celebrating our Faiths displays at City Hall are open to viewing on weekdays from 7am to 10pm, Saturdays from 9am to 5pm and Sundays and holidays from 11am to 5pm.
