Maanyog, Satkaaryog Guru Sadh Sangat jio Waheguru Ji Ka Khalsa, Waheguru Ji Ki Fateh. APPEAL FOR VILNIUS GURDWARA IN LITHUANIA. A "notional" Gurdwara has been established in VILNIUS with its e-mail address as: _vilniusgurdwara@aol.com_ (mailto:vilniusgurdwara@aol.com) . We hope that the Gurdwara in Vilnius will be established some time in the future in its own purpose built building. It will be the first Gurdwara to serve the sangat (Sikh communities) in the three Baltic Republics of Estonia, Latvia and Lithuania. Vilnius is a very beautiful and modern city of half a million inhabitants. It is developing rapidly due to dynamism and skills of its people. It offers world class cultural and recreational facilities. The people of Lithuania, the last to convert to Christianity towards the end of 14th Century AD, are spiritually linked to their roots in ancient India and many still travel to that country for pilgrimage to various holy sites. The Lithuanian language is a direct descendant of Sanskrit that provides strong motivation for them to visit India. However, the Sikh religion being relatively new, is not yet well known in Lithuania. It is, therefore, most desirable for the Sikh community worldwide to cherish and encourage the idea of Sikh presence in Vilnius in the shape of a Gurdwara-cum-Community Centre. The Vilnius Gurdwara will function as a place of worship and a meeting place for all Sikhs passing through, or coming for business or pleasure to Lithuania. Gradually, with Gurus’ blessings and support from patrons, Lithuania will have her own Sikh residents in increasing numbers. Vilnius Gurdwara will house a library with a sizeable stock of books and audio-visual resources. It will undertake essential social and community work such as- 1. Teaching the Punjabi language. 2. Raising awareness about the Sikhs among the local people. 3. Supporting schools and colleges throughout Lithuania with regard to knowledge about Punjab and the Sikhs. With this end in view, Vilnius Gurdwara is already assisting and cooperating with the Centre of Oriental Studies, at Vilnius University. Many valuable books have been donated to the University which is one of the oldest in the world. 4. Taking an active part in local charity work; 5. Overseeing the translation of essential books, including Sri Guru Granth Sahib ji, from English and/or Punjabi into Lithuanian and Russian languages. (Lithuania was part of the Soviet Union until 1991 and 6.3% of the population is Russian.) All amounts of money received from donors will be used strictly for the Gurdwara and its outreach (educational, spiritual, social and cultural) programmes as stated above. Vilnius Gurdwara belongs to the entire Sikh Panth. Kindly support its construction now with whatever your can send. All Gursikhs are kindly requested to enable us to make this dream come true by contributing generously towards this noble cause. Those donating £500 or more will become honorary members of the Gurdwara for life. A bank account has been opened in the United Kingdom as per following details:- NAME OF ACCOUNT: Vilnius Gurdwara BANK ADDRESS: NATWEST BANK plc 40, Market Street, WELLIINGBOROUGH, NN8 1AD, ENGLAND. ACCOUNT NO. 81046634. BANK SORT CODE: 55-70-37. Humbly, Rajinder Singh Honorary Caretaker, VILNIUS GURDWARA. E-mail: _vilniusgurdwara@aol.com_ (mailto:vilniusgurdwara@aol.com)
