Dear Khalsa Ji, With the blessings of ‘The Sat’, I share with you what the 28th Pauri of Anand Sahib means to me. 1. mwqw ky audr mih pRiqpwl kry so ikau mnhu ivswrIAY ] maataa kay udar meh partipaal karay so ki-o manhu visaaree-ai. All what happened in the womb of the mother was done by (The Sat), so how can one dissociate ‘The Sat’ from one’s mind. My understanding: In this sentence, Guru Sahib makes it very clear to me that I exist only because of ‘The Sat’. ‘The Sat’ gave me this life and through my mother gave this human form to me. ‘The Sat’ is my source. How can I forget this basic fact and move away from ‘The Sat’. This way Guru Sahib instructs me to be one with ‘The Sat’. ‘The Sat’ should be in my natural being 2. mnhu ikau ivswrIAY eyvfu dwqw ij Agin mih Awhwru phucwvey ] manhu ki-o visaaree-ai ayvad daataa je agan meh aahaar pahuchaava-ay. Why dissociate ‘The Sat’ from one’s mind that made nourishment reach the individual in the fire (please see the explanation for the usage if this word below) of the womb. My understanding: Guru Sahib in this sentence tells me that not only ‘The Sat’ gave me life but also provided me the nourishment that I needed in my mothers womb. This way Guru Sahib tells me that ‘The Sat’ is not only the source of my life but also the sustainer of life in me. I am alive, is the blessing from ‘The Sat’. It will be foolish on my part to dissociate ‘The Sat’ from my mind. ‘The Sat’ is my source, the real provider i.e. ‘Daataa’. I should always be one with ‘The Sat’. Cut from the source I will wither away. Guru Sahib has used the word ‘fire’ for womb. This word is rightly used. Here, the word ‘fire’ is not to be understood for its destructive attributes, where it burns, causes pain and discomfort or destroys the object. Guru Sahib has used this word for the constructive attribute of the fire. It is the fire that melts the metal so that it can be poured into pattern to caste it into the required shape. It is the fire that heats the metal so that it can be forged and formed into the required shape. My mother’s womb did exactly that to me what this fire does to metals; it enabled forming of my body as a human. Here, this word ‘fire’ is intended to mean the sum total of all the processes - from fertilisation to the delivery of the baby – that take place in mothers womb. It is for this reason Guru Sahib has used this word ‘fire’ to denote womb, and done so rightly with rational and justification. 3. Es no ikhu poih n skI ijs nau AwpxI ilv lwvey ] os no kihu pohi na sakee jis na-o aapnee liv laav-ay. Nothing can harm the person whom ‘The Sat’ imbues with the thoughts of this ‘Daataa’. My understanding: Guru Sahib tells me that once the person is graces by ‘The Sat’ and her or his mind gets imbued with the presence of ‘The Sat’, no harm will come to her or him. This is not to be understood as if ‘The Sat’ will stand guard and protect her or him physically. No, that is not the task for ‘The Sat’ to do. What Guru Sahib has said is that individual whose being is imbued with ‘The Sat’ will become so ‘True’ that divinity will dawn on her or him. Such person will only be revered and not hurt by the others. Even if some body hurts such individual, this divine person will not feel the pain, as she or he would have reached a mental stage that is much above the feelings of the body. This is what happened to our Guru Sahib when he was made to sit on the fired kiln – he remained composed. Feeling of hurt or harm is the effect and not the cause. If one’s being does not process such cause, the effect cannot manifest itself. The cause becomes inoperative; it reduces to nothing. This is what happens to those who are in Samadhi – no one can harm them. That is why Guru Sahib has said in this sentence that the person who is graced by ‘The Sat’ and her or his mind gets imbued with the presence of ‘The Sat’, no harm will come to her or him. 4. AwpxI ilv Awpy lwey gurmuiK sdw smwlIAY ] aapnee liv aapay laa-ay gurmukh sadaa samaalee-ai. ‘The Sat’ is the entity to be imbued with; ‘The Sat’ is also the process to imbue the individual. The Gurmukh always guards it. My understanding: Guru Sahib, here, tells me that the entity to be imbued with and the process of being imbued both are not with me. I have to qualify for the grace of ‘The Sat’ i.e. Gurparsadi. My past understanding tells me that I can only prepare myself i.e. I should become pure in thoughts, speech and action. When I have reached the level of such purity and my being becomes naturally so, the grace of the ‘The Sat’ will flow towards me. This is Gurparsadi. The Gurmukh who is grace in this way by ‘The Sat’, always nurture this blessing by remaining naturally pure. 5. khY nwnku eyvfu dwqw so ikau mnhu ivswrIAY ]28] kahai naanak ayvad daataa so ki-o manhu visaaree-ai. ||28|| Says Nanak, why to dissociate such provider from ones mind? My understanding: In the first two sentences of this Pauri, Guru Sahib told me that ‘The Sat’ alone cares and provides to me all that I need at physical plane through out my life. In the third and forth sentences of the Pauri, Guru Sahib told me that ‘The Sat’ only provides me at spiritual level also. In this last sentence Guru Sahib poses a question to me as to why should I dissociate such a great and comprehensive provider from my mind? I know if I do so, it will be absolutely foolish on my part. With this I close my post on 28th Pauri of Anand Sahib. With love and respect for all. Amarpal Singh.
