At that time, most of the nearby Indian Fighters were either parked on their bases or were far away from the incident scene. MiG 21 was the first aircraft to counter the enemy fighter that day. Also, 2 Su 30MKI which were on CAP ordered to intercept the incoming fighters. According to the reports, Pakistan Air Force was carrying a fleet of 24 fighters with mixed formations of various jets. The jets were Mirage III/V, JF 17, and F16. The Mirage III/V never crossed the LOC but dropped their bombs nearby the border. 3 aircraft including F16 and JF 17 penetrated inside Indian airspace to engage Indian Jets and drop bombs near Indian Military installations. When an F16 spotted the Indian Air Force Su 30, it fired at least 3–4 AMRAAMs to hit the Flanker. Fortunately, due to evasive maneuvers, usage of Flares & Chaff, and Jamming tactics; the Su 30MKI dodged all the AMRAAMs. The F16s turned away and tried to retreat back to their respective airspace. Su 30MKI was ordered by the command not to proceed further and only protect the key installations of the Indian Military. MiG 21 also received an order to return back to the base but the pilot decided to chase the F16 until he shoot it down. While chasing, the pilot was able to visually sight the F16 giving him a clear opportunity to switch to his R73 Within Visual Range Air to Air Missile (WVRAAM) and shoot the jet. But it was too late for him to notice that he is in enemy airspace. He was too busy to maintain his lock at the F16 and it distracted him from looking at the map. Result: Another PAF Jet shot the MiG 21 with an AAM and the pilot was forced to eject and land on enemy soil. Indian Air Force did not intrude into the Pakistani Airspace intentionally. According to a few reports, the MiG 21 system was actually jammed by Pakistani jammers. It left no choice for the pilot and he failed to return back to the base.
