ਸਲੋਕੁ ॥
Salok.
Salok (Core theme of eight sabads/hymns in the Astpadi)

ਸਾਥਿ ਨ ਚਾਲੈ ਬਿਨੁ ਭਜਨ ਬਿਖਿਆ ਸਗਲੀ ਛਾਰੁ ॥ ਹਰਿ ਹਰਿ ਨਾਮੁ ਕਮਾਵਨਾ ਨਾਨਕ ਇਹੁ ਧਨੁ ਸਾਰੁ ॥੧॥
Sāth na cẖālai bin bẖajan bikẖi▫ā saglī cẖẖār. Har har nām kamāvanā Nānak ih ḏẖan sār. ||1||
Nothing goes with one except contemplation, all wealth turns to ashes. Creator, creator’s understanding is the only wealth worthy of making.

ਅਸਟਪਦੀ॥
Asatpaḏī.
Eight stanzas hymn

ਤਤੁ ਬੀਚਾਰੁ ਕਹੈ ਜਨੁ ਸਾਚਾ ॥ ਜਨਮਿ ਮਰੈ ਸੋ ਕਾਚੋ ਕਾਚਾ ॥
Ŧaṯ bīcẖār kahai jan sācẖā. Janam marai so kācẖo kācẖā.
Servant of the true creator so speaking is a true person. Ones just so born and dead are most incomplete.

ਆਵਾ ਗਵਨੁ ਮਿਟੈ ਪ੍ਰਭ ਸੇਵ ॥ ਆਪੁ ਤਿਆਗਿ ਸਰਨਿ ਗੁਰਦੇਵ ॥
Āvā gavan mitai parabẖ sev. Āp ṯi▫āg saran gurḏev.
Serving the creator erases birth and death cycle. Relinquish selfishness and find cover under creator lord.

ਇਉ ਰਤਨ ਜਨਮ ਕਾ ਹੋਇ ਉਧਾਰੁ ॥ ਹਰਿ ਹਰਿ ਸਿਮਰਿ ਪ੍ਰਾਨ ਆਧਾਰੁ ॥
I▫o raṯan janam kā ho▫e uḏẖār. Har har simar parān āḏẖār.
Such provides salvation to precious life. Contemplate on the creator and the creator is support for life.

ਅਨਿਕ ਉਪਾਵ ਨ ਛੂਟਨਹਾਰੇ ॥ ਸਿੰਮ੍ਰਿਤਿ ਸਾਸਤ ਬੇਦ ਬੀਚਾਰੇ ॥
Anik upāv na cẖẖūtanhāre. Simriṯ sāsaṯ beḏ bīcẖāre.
Many methods will not save. Or study of simiritees, treatises, Vedas.

ਹਰਿ ਕੀ ਭਗਤਿ ਕਰਹੁ ਮਨੁ ਲਾਇ ॥ ਮਨਿ ਬੰਛਤ ਨਾਨਕ ਫਲ ਪਾਇ ॥੪॥
Har kī bẖagaṯ karahu man lā▫e. Man bancẖẖaṯ Nānak fal pā▫e. ||4||
With focused mind contemplate on the creator. Nanak, such desiring mind gets the fruits.

Quote:

ESSENCE: In the salok, Guru ji state that all becomes ashes and the only effort that sustains is contemplation of the creator. Also only wealth worth making is creator’s understanding.

Guru Arjan Dev ji in Astpadi 19, 4th sabad emphasize that without selfless service to the creator and being in shelter of the creator, life is purpose less and is just coming and going. Many methods and study of ancient treatises like Vedas are useless for this purpose. With focus on association and understanding of the creator, the valuable life finds purpose, birth and death lose control.

Guru ji conclude that contemplate in your mind, the creator, such a mind gets the results.
