ਸਲੋਕੁ ॥ Salok. Salok (Core theme of eight sabads/hymns in the Astpadi)
ਸਾਥਿ ਨ ਚਾਲੈ ਬਿਨੁ ਭਜਨ ਬਿਖਿਆ ਸਗਲੀ ਛਾਰੁ ॥ ਹਰਿ ਹਰਿ ਨਾਮੁ ਕਮਾਵਨਾ ਨਾਨਕ ਇਹੁ ਧਨੁ ਸਾਰੁ ॥੧॥ Sāth na cẖālai bin bẖajan bikẖi▫ā saglī cẖẖār. Har har nām kamāvanā Nānak ih ḏẖan sār. ||1|| Nothing goes with one except contemplation, all wealth turns to ashes. Creator, creator’s understanding is the only wealth worthy of making. ਅਸਟਪਦੀ॥ Asatpaḏī. Eight stanzas hymn ਮਨੁ ਪਰਬੋਧਹੁ ਹਰਿ ਕੈ ਨਾਇ ॥ ਦਹ ਦਿਸਿ ਧਾਵਤ ਆਵੈ ਠਾਇ ॥ Man parboḏẖahu har kai nā▫e. Ḏah ḏis ḏẖāvaṯ āvai ṯẖā▫e. Wake up the mind with understanding of the creator. Wandering so in ten directions, now finds destination. ਤਾ ਕਉ ਬਿਘਨੁ ਨ ਲਾਗੈ ਕੋਇ ॥ ਜਾ ਕੈ ਰਿਦੈ ਬਸੈ ਹਰਿ ਸੋਇ ॥ Ŧā ka▫o bigẖan na lāgai ko▫e. Jā kai riḏai basai har so▫e. No obstruction prevails for such. In whose heart the creator resides. ਕਲਿ ਤਾਤੀ ਠਾਂਢਾ ਹਰਿ ਨਾਉ ॥ ਸਿਮਰਿ ਸਿਮਰਿ ਸਦਾ ਸੁਖ ਪਾਉ ॥ Kal ṯāṯī ṯẖāʼndẖā har nā▫o. Simar simar saḏā sukẖ pā▫o. In dark age the creator’s understanding is cooling. Contemplate and contemplate, always get comfort. ਭਉ ਬਿਨਸੈ ਪੂਰਨ ਹੋਇ ਆਸ ॥ ਭਗਤਿ ਭਾਇ ਆਤਮ ਪਰਗਾਸ ॥ Bẖa▫o binsai pūran ho▫e ās. Bẖagaṯ bẖā▫e āṯam pargās. Fear destroyed, the expected is fulfilled. In pious, contemplation so enlightens the soul ਤਿਤੁ ਘਰਿ ਜਾਇ ਬਸੈ ਅਬਿਨਾਸੀ ॥ ਕਹੁ ਨਾਨਕ ਕਾਟੀ ਜਮ ਫਾਸੀ ॥੩॥ Ŧiṯ gẖar jā▫e basai abẖināsī. Kaho Nānak kātī jam fāsī. ||3|| In such house moves in the indestructible. Nanak says, the noose of demon is cut. Quote: ESSENCE: In the salok, Guru ji state that all becomes ashes and the only effort that sustains is contemplation of the creator. Also only wealth worth making is creator’s understanding.
Guru Arjan Dev ji in Astpadi 19, 3rd sabad describe the need to contemplate, understand and keep in the heart the creator’s understanding. In so doing aimless wandering is eliminated, obstructions don’t arise, one becomes cool and collected, fears are gone and the soul is enlightened.
Guru ji conclude that such is the body that now finds the creator in it and the fear of death vanishes. | Please note all errors are mine and I stand corrected.
