ਸਲੋਕੁ ॥
Salok.
Salok (Core theme of eight sabads/hymns in the Astpadi)

ਸਾਥਿ ਨ ਚਾਲੈ ਬਿਨੁ ਭਜਨ ਬਿਖਿਆ ਸਗਲੀ ਛਾਰੁ ॥ ਹਰਿ ਹਰਿ ਨਾਮੁ ਕਮਾਵਨਾ ਨਾਨਕ ਇਹੁ ਧਨੁ ਸਾਰੁ ॥੧॥
Sāth na cẖālai bin bẖajan bikẖi▫ā saglī cẖẖār. Har har nām kamāvanā Nānak ih ḏẖan sār. ||1||
Nothing goes with one except contemplation, all wealth turns to ashes. Creator, creator’s understanding is the only wealth worthy of making.

ਅਸਟਪਦੀ॥
Asatpaḏī.
Eight stanzas hymn

ਜਿਸੁ ਧਨ ਕਉ ਚਾਰਿ ਕੁੰਟ ਉਠਿ ਧਾਵਹਿ ॥ ਸੋ ਧਨੁ ਹਰਿ ਸੇਵਾ ਤੇ ਪਾਵਹਿ ॥
Jis ḏẖan ka▫o cẖār kunt uṯẖ ḏẖāvėh. So ḏẖan har sevā ṯe pāvahi.
Such wealth that one runs towards in all four directions. Such wealth is gotten by serving the creator.

ਜਿਸੁ ਸੁਖ ਕਉ ਨਿਤ ਬਾਛਹਿ ਮੀਤ ॥ ਸੋ ਸੁਖੁ ਸਾਧੂ ਸੰਗਿ ਪਰੀਤਿ ॥
Jis sukẖ ka▫o niṯ bācẖẖėh mīṯ. So sukẖ sāḏẖū sang parīṯ.
Friend, the comfort that you wish for. Such comfort, in linking lovingly with the pious.

ਜਿਸੁ ਸੋਭਾ ਕਉ ਕਰਹਿ ਭਲੀ ਕਰਨੀ ॥ ਸਾ ਸੋਭਾ ਭਜੁ ਹਰਿ ਕੀ ਸਰਨੀ ॥
Jis sobẖā ka▫o karahi bẖalī karnī. Sā sobẖā bẖaj har kī sarnī.
Honest work that you do for so fame. For such fame contemplate under the creator’s shelter.

ਅਨਿਕ ਉਪਾਵੀ ਰੋਗੁ ਨ ਜਾਇ ॥ ਰੋਗੁ ਮਿਟੈ ਹਰਿ ਅਵਖਧੁ ਲਾਇ ॥
Anik upāvī rog na jā▫e. Rog mitai har avkẖaḏẖ lā▫e.
Ailment does not leave with many methods. Ailment is cured using creator’s medicine.

ਸਰਬ ਨਿਧਾਨ ਮਹਿ ਹਰਿ ਨਾਮੁ ਨਿਧਾਨੁ ॥ ਜਪਿ ਨਾਨਕ ਦਰਗਹਿ ਪਰਵਾਨੁ ॥੨॥
Sarab niḏẖān mėh har nām niḏẖān. Jap Nānak ḏargahi parvān. ||2||
Of all treasures, creator’s understanding is the treasure. Nanak, contemplate what is accepted at the abode.

Quote:

ESSENCE: In the salok, Guru ji state that all becomes ashes and the only effort that sustains is contemplation of the creator. Also only wealth worth making is creator’s understanding.

Guru Arjan Dev ji in Astpadi 19, 2nd sabad describe the benefits of contemplation and association with creator’s understanding by self or association with the pious. Guru ji state real wealth in serving the creator, comfort in the company of the pious contemplating on the creator, fame in contemplation and under the shelter of the creator, creator’s medicine for all that ails one.

Guru ji conclude that creator’s understanding is best of all treasures and stays with forever.
