| |  | | | Sukhmani Sahib Astpadi 18 Sabad 4 / ਸੁਖਮਨੀ ਸਾਹਿਬ ਅਸਟਪਦੀ ੧੮ ਸਬਦ ੪
ਸਲੋਕੁ ॥ Salok. Salok (Core theme of eight sabads/hymns in the Astpadi) ਸਤਿ ਪੁਰਖੁ ਜਿਨਿ ਜਾਨਿਆ ਸਤਿਗੁਰੁ ਤਿਸ ਕਾ ਨਾਉ ॥ ਤਿਸ ਕੈ ਸੰਗਿ ਸਿਖੁ ਉਧਰੈ ਨਾਨਕ ਹਰਿ ਗੁਨ ਗਾਉ ॥੧॥ Saṯ purakẖ jin jāni▫ā saṯgur ṯis kā nā▫o. Ŧis kai sang sikẖ uḏẖrai Nānak har gun gā▫o. ||1|| Such who recognized the eternal omni-present one, name of such is the eternal creator. Nanak, in company of those, a learner is saved from ill deeds, so do sing virtues of the creator. ਅਸਟਪਦੀ॥ Asatpaḏī. Eight stanzas hymn ਸਫਲ ਦਰਸਨੁ ਪੇਖਤ ਪੁਨੀਤ ॥ ਪਰਸਤ ਚਰਨ ਗਤਿ ਨਿਰਮਲ ਰੀਤਿ ॥ Safal ḏarsan pekẖaṯ punīṯ. Parsaṯ cẖaran gaṯ nirmal rīṯ. Visualization is fruitful, the vision purifies. Touching the feet, purified self and living. ਭੇਟਤ ਸੰਗਿ ਰਾਮ ਗੁਨ ਰਵੇ ॥ ਪਾਰਬ੍ਰਹਮ ਕੀ ਦਰਗਹ ਗਵੇ ॥ Bẖetaṯ sang rām gun rave. Pārbarahm kī ḏargėh gave. In company of the followers, creator’s virtues sung. Supreme creator’s abode is accessible. ਸੁਨਿ ਕਰਿ ਬਚਨ ਕਰਨ ਆਘਾਨੇ ॥ ਮਨਿ ਸੰਤੋਖੁ ਆਤਮ ਪਤੀਆਨੇ ॥ Sun kar bacẖan karan āgẖāne. Man sanṯokẖ āṯam paṯī▫āne. Listening to discourse, the ears brim in fullness. Mind finds contentment, soul is satiated. ਪੂਰਾ ਗੁਰੁ ਅਖ੍ਯ੍ਯਓ ਜਾ ਕਾ ਮੰਤ੍ਰ ॥ ਅੰਮ੍ਰਿਤ ਦ੍ਰਿਸਟਿ ਪੇਖੈ ਹੋਇ ਸੰਤ ॥ Pūrā gur akẖ▫ya▫o jā kā manṯar. Amriṯ ḏarisat pekẖai ho▫e sanṯ. Creator is complete and so the teachings of such. Pure glance makes one pious. ਗੁਣ ਬਿਅੰਤ ਕੀਮਤਿ ਨਹੀ ਪਾਇ ॥ ਨਾਨਕ ਜਿਸੁ ਭਾਵੈ ਤਿਸੁ ਲਏ ਮਿਲਾਇ ॥੪॥ Guṇ bi▫anṯ kīmaṯ nahī pā▫e. Nānak jis bẖāvai ṯis la▫e milā▫e. ||4|| Cannot put value to limitless virtues. Nanak, one so liked gets to meet.
Quote: ESSENCE: In the salok, Guru ji state that those who recognize the true one, will know it to be the eternal creator. Company of such people saves one from ills and so sing the virtues of the creator .
Guru Arjan Dev ji in Astpadi 18, 4th sabad describe the effects of realizing creator’s virtues. Vision purified, purity in living, access to creator’s wisdom, mind and soul find peace and tranquility in listening, the complete creator understanding leads one to ways of being pious.
Guru ji conclude that the so invaluable creator is only enjoined by the so liked. | Please note all errors are mine and I stand corrected.
