Salok.
Salok (Core theme of eight sabads/hymns in the Astpadi)

Sukẖī basai maskīnī▫ā āp nivār ṯale. Bade bade ahaʼnkārī▫ā Nānak garab gale. ||1||
The mild mannered live in comfort acting selfless and low. Nanak many bigger than big ego centric, rot in egotism.

Asatpaḏī.
Eight stanzas hymn

Jab lag jānai mujẖ ṯe kacẖẖ ho▫e. Ŧab is ka▫o sukẖ nāhī ko▫e.
Till one believes to be capable of doing something. In as such one does not find comfort.

Jab ih jānai mai kicẖẖ karṯā. Ŧab lag garabẖ jon mėh firṯā.
One such thinks of power to do. So is such wandering in circle of life.

Jab ḏẖārai ko▫ū bairī mīṯ. Ŧab lag nihcẖal nāhī cẖīṯ.
When treats one as enemy and other as friend. Till then one will be restless in mind.

Jab lag moh magan sang mā▫e. Ŧab lag ḏẖaram rā▫e ḏe▫e sajā▫e.
As long as one is amorously preoccupied with world possessions. Such is till then so punished by judge of deeds.

Parabẖ kirpā ṯe banḏẖan ṯūtai. Gur parsāḏ Nānak ha▫o cẖẖūtai. ||4||
With creator’s blessing the restraints are broken. Nanak with creator’s blessing ego so departs.
Quote:
ESSENCE: In the salok, Guru ji state that mild mannered humble and selfless live in comfort while the ego centric have a life rotten by ego.

Guru Arjan Dev ji in Astpadi 12, 4th sabad cite attachment, differential view of others and belief in self power. Believing in changing what is, treating people differently between friends and foes, attached to possessions. All these lead to unease in living, restless mind and preoccupation with life transformations.

Guru ji conclude that with creator’s benevolence one is unshackled and ego subsides.

NOTE: An interesting thought about all who are so determined and are preoccupied with their power to get rid of the five thieves. Really, you are that powerful! Sri Guru Granth Sahib Ji emphasizes extensively the grace of the creator allowing for the betterment of our living. One needs to so condition self to receive such grace of the creator versus keep focused on the power of change to attack say the five thieves. Your living conditions you, much more than mere thoughts, simrans, etc.

Live and be blessed with grace, don't just think, recite, parrot, etc!
Please note all errors are mine and I stand corrected.

Sat Sri Akal.
