Meditation Techniques

4 Little Known Secrets of Meditation

Meditation Techniques Secret #1: The True Purpose of Meditation
Reference:: Sikh Philosophy Network http://www.sikhphilosophy.net/spiritual-articles/15291-meditation-techniques.html

Many people feel a sense of fascination when confronted with the possibility of mystic visions, psychic intuition and heightened mental functioning. While meditators often report these sorts of improvements, these experiences should not be the primary reason for practice. The purpose of meditation is to bring us back to ourselves.

As we become healthier, happier and realize greater self-awareness, the other benefits of meditation begin to follow naturally -- improved mental functioning, greater intuition as well as greater access to unconscious resources and abilities.

Meditation Techniques Secret #2: Distraction Does Not Equal Failure

Meditation is not work in the sense that you have to 'force' yourself to concentrate completely for long periods of time. If we consciously try to prevent thinking, it's going to have a negative impact on the meditation.

Instead, whenever we become lost in thought or confusion, we simply acknowledge those thoughts and then gently return the attention to the object of the meditation. We do this as many times as distraction or thought occurs. Eventually, the mind becomes calmer and discursive thought begins to slow.

Meditation Techniques Secret #3: Insight Alone Is Not Enough
Reference:: Sikh Philosophy Network http://www.sikhphilosophy.net/showthread.php?t=15291

Insight alone will not transform our lives. Meditation is likely to help us by giving us larger perspectives and increasing clarity of thought. But although our sense of inner guidance might become stronger, unless we ACT on that guidance, we will never manifest the changes we truly want in our lives.

This doesn't just mean we need to take action in our outer world, for example, having an honest conversation with a friend or paying a bill.

It also means we must actively request the assistance of the unconscious in a clear and persistent way. When you do that, as I teach in 'Secrets of Meditation, Energy and Manifestation,' you find yourself magnetically drawn toward your dreams with an irresistible impulse.

Meditation Techniques Secret #4: Learn To Let Go

Once you have made your request, it's important that you let go. Don’t be concerned with HOW you're going to get what you truly want in your life. Needing to know how can hamper the process of making it manifest in the outer world. Learn to trust your unconscious.

Some changes -- perhaps all of them -- will happen automatically. I have personally found that many of my destructive habits simply dropped away with minimal conscious effort.

For me, this was achieved not by self-discipline and will power, but rather a “letting go” and a realization that spiritual growth is a natural process powered by parts of ourselves that know more than we can understand consciously.

As we let go consciously and receive more input from these parts, we learn to trust this feeling, this feeling that we are in safe hands and that something amazing is about to happen.

Harbajhan ji,

Thank you so much for this one. Every little wonderous experience of meditation that is shared helps me understand how the path must feel along the way.

The state of awareness is like a deep sleep. Just like baby in a deep state, were everything and nothing no longer matters. Only deeper. Reaching that state is where the mind, body and soul rests. The greatest peace, and just like a baby when you awake from it you cry.

Hi Parma ji,

I just noticed this and it is 2300 hours over here in the states. Maybe tomorrow we can get a discussion going. People have been kind of quiet today. Spring fever.

Re: Meditation Techniques

Parma ji,

Coming back to this discussion. How is the kind of trance state you describe in meditation different from a hypnotic trance? Several years back I went to a therapist for pain-management and chose hyponsis because I didn't want to take strong drugs with dangerous side-effects. Hypnosis is not the kind of thing you see in a bad movie. You do not lose control. Quite the opposite.

First of all it takes two or three weeks to LEARN how to go into a trance and take control of it yourself. About two or three weeks of learning relaxation techniques. When you are finally able to experience a deep trance the result is very similar to what you have described. You are aware of everything around you but can choose to ignore all of it - a dog barking, the phone ringing, the mailman at the door-- it all is so, so far away. You no longer feel the sense of your own body. You no longer feel you are planted on the ground. That sense of an outline all around you isn't there any more. You want to stay focused on an image in your mind of something that is very beautiful and peaceful. But, at any time you can come out of the trance-- and you are taught how to do that without doing it too quickly. Coming out of trance too quickly can set you back.
Reference:: Sikh Philosophy Network http://www.sikhphilosophy.net/showthread.php?t=15291

I asked a yoga instructor once how yogic meditation was different from a hypnotic trance, and she wouldn't answer my question. So the questions persist for me. I learned how to go into a hypnotic trance by myself, and still do this for pain reduction and relaxation.

There is nothing about magic or spirits or astral bodies flying around you in any of this. It is deep relaxation and you are in control. It has been shown by brain research that certain brain waves change their rhythm in both hypnotic trance states and deep meditation by buddhist monks as well as Catholic nuns. Actual controlled laboratory studies.

I ask however because there has to be more to a meditative state than this kind of trance I have just described. Are you thinking that the imagery goes to a deeper connection with God? I don't know enough about meditation to be able to say.

Thanks for starting me thinking again about this.

Re: Meditation Techniques

Bro I dont know im just decribing my state of mind in my peace of mind. Or should i say when I realy felt aware of who I was. A soul. Only god could answer that one for you buddi. I dont know if you've met god only god could answer that one. That would be between you and god bro. Just descibing how I felt peace. No one has got a one way ticket to god the gurbarni says it comes from being pure. To me god exsists everywhere. In my state of peace and out of my state of peace. You cant limit god to just thought to me that would be thoughtless.

Wahegur Ji Ka Khasla Waheguru Ji Ki Fateh:

Parma ji,
the state you (may have entered) describe is called Sunn. "Sunn Samad Sacha Ghar Bara"
this is a state when your Mann is free from all thoughts and is above "TREGUN Maya" , Bavsagr, Sansar Sagar, Bikham Nadia, it is our true home.
your soul when in this world of maya and sukam maya; what we see and what we don't seelike our thought and relationships etc, take toughts do perform actions and won't stop talking. this creates a Gravity of Vichars that pulls us down and keeps us from entering this 4 Chota Pad, (Nij Ghar, Siege Gufa, begam pura).
by doing simran we cut down our Vichars; Sasgras,and SasSas are the Method the Dhan Sri Guru Granth Sahib ji telles us to do " Nit Japie Sas Giras Nao Parvadigar Da" and "Vichar Mare Tare Taarre Ult Joon Nah Aih" kill you thoughts and you will not have to be reincarnated.
Reference:: Sikh Philosophy Network http://www.sikhphilosophy.net/showthread.php?t=15291

IF in fact that you entered this state is a big step. most people don't know what Seige is and are unaware or asleep when they go there. your Mann May have been awake when you got there.
This body is Refered to as Harmandir in the Gurbani Guru as "Harmandir Eho Sharir he Gian Rattan Pargat hoi" and in this body was created by conjoining air water and fire and fashioned with 9 doors and a 10th GATE.
the nine doors are eyes, nose, ears and waste release organs. our attention is mostly outside in Tregun (3 quality) world below Chote Padd(4 State) and our mann is alway goin in and out these 9 doors. by doing simran we take our focus away from them and listen to Waheguru gurmantr and enter this State of sun. from there we just have to sit and wait for God to awaken us. our Mann is alseep here and there so we cannot see anything eventually you will awaken ther eby Satgurs grace.

You should visit Prabh Milne Ka Chao website or Simran.info i have found this two site very helpful in my journey. it is very very very important to understand the Akath Katha because without understanding your body , what the world you live in and where you must go and the forces at work, how you must live in this world; you cannot play this game nor win it.
