Sikh WPC Wins Racism Claim

A SIKH policewoman is expected to win a five-figure payout after an employment *tribunal ruled she suffered racist and religious humiliation.

Amandeep Kaur Grewal claimed she was *singled out for unfair criticism and treatment because of her race by trainer PC *Lucinda Rigby.

When Mrs Grewal complained, she was told by PC Rigby that other *students were laughing at her behind her back. Mother-of-two Mrs Grewal, 38, said some of her fellow recruits at the Metropolitan Police College in Hendon, north London, treated her in a “less-than friendly fashion”.

The *tribunal in Reading *rejected the Met’s claim that trainers had considered Mrs Grewal’s skills to be poor compared with other students.
The panel ruled that Mrs Grewal, now a policewoman in Kingston, south-west London, had been unfairly targeted. It found the Met guilty of race and religious discrimination.

Compensation will be decided later.

Another Report:

Last month, Reading Employment Tribunal heard the case of Grewal v Metropolitan Police Service, a claim brought by a Sikh female police officer who complained that a trainer at the Metropolitan Police's training school singled her out for abuse and criticism on the grounds of her race and religion.

Amandeep Kaur Grewal told the Tribunal how WPC Lucinda Rigby had picked on her and treated her differently because of her race and religion. When she complained, Rigby responded by telling her that other students were laughing at her. The animosity led to other students treating Grewal in a "less than friendly fashion", further exacerbating Grewal's humiliation. The situation became so entrenched that another trainer had to hold a diversity class.

The Metroplitan Police Service attempted to defend the claim on the basis of Grewal's ability, suggesting that her skills were poor compared to others students. The Tribunal rejected this explanation and found that Rigby had targeted Grewal, and acted in a "hurtful" and "inappropriate" manner.

The Tribunal concluded that the Metropolitan Police had discriminated against Grewal on the grounds of both her race and religion. The matter has been adjourned for remedy, when it is anticipated that Grewal will be awarded a five figure sum for the discrimination.
