The Sikh community has raised its second domed temple in Anderson.
The newest temple, located at 3900 Riverside Dr., is called the Sikh Temple of Redding. Its members have scheduled an opening ceremony for Sunday, Sept. 6.

"We want everybody from the community to come," said Charanbir Kandhola, temple project manager.

Mayors from both Anderson and Redding have been invited to participate in the event.

"There will be free food," Kandhola added.

The ceremony begins with the cleansing of a flag pole with milk at 9 a.m. and continues through the afternoon with a helicopter releasing flower petals over the temple at about 11 a.m., Kandhola said.

The temple's opening coincides with the first time the Sikh holy book was read in 1605 by Baba Buddha Ji in Amritsar, India, according to Kandhola.

Before construction of the new temple was completed, the small, bright yellow house next door served as the Sikh church since 2002. Before then, Sikh families from Redding worshiped at the Martin Luther King Jr. Community Center, Jaspal Singh Gill said previously.

The Riverside Drive house will now provide a residence for the temple's three priests, Charandit Singh, Jaswant Singh and Pardeep Singh. ***
