Samuhik Vivaha Samagam (Mass Marriages) of 18 Sikh Couples Performed in Hyderabad
May 11th, 2009

Hyderabad, May 10 : With blessings of Guru Granth Sahebji, as many as 18 couples who never dreamt of getting married in a such a befitting manner that too in the presence of over 20,000 sikhs who came from far off places to bless the newly wed couples.

The happiest of them were bride and bridegroom parents who never dreamt of their daughters and sons getting married in such a pomp amd dignified manner that too without spending a single penny. There were many more who were in high spirits as their wards entered into wedlock at the Samagam.

This was possible due to the initiatives of the Prabhandak Committee, Gurudwara Saheb Barambala, Sikh Chawniat, Kishanbagh, Hyderabad for making the impossible dream come true for the new couples, their parents and grandparents.

On Sunday, marriages of 18 couples were solemnised at the fifth `` Samuhik Vivaha Samagam" (Mass marriage) under one roof at Gurudwara Saheb Barambala, in the presence of head priest Baba Jyotinder Singhji of Takhat Sachkhand Sri Hazur Sahib, Nanded, Maharastra.

It was the fifth consecutive year that mass marriages was being performed by the Gurudwaras in the city by turns.

There was a carnival like ambience at the Gurudwara right from Saturday as the ``sagai'' and ``Mehendi'' ceremonies took place. Today attired in colourful clothes, the bridegrooms came astride horses in a colourful ``Baraat''. Anand Karaj (Lawan Phere), the most important part of the ceremony by taking four rounds of the Guru Granth Sahebji and was performed at 11.30 am.

The brides and bridegrooms hailed from Hyderabad, Karimnagar, Hanamkonda, Nalgonda, Maharastra, Karnataka and other places. Prabhandak Committee President S Harbans Singh and General Secretary, S Bhag Singh said that this unique service was provided by the Prabhandak Committee Gurudwara Saheb Barambala as many of the economically poor families who cannot afford to perform luxurious marriages that require heavy expenditure.

The most heartening part was that all the Sikh Gurudwaras in Andhra Pradesh extended wholehearted support for the successful conduct of these marriages.

The couples were later presented ``siropa'' (robe of honour) and various Gurudwara Prabhandak Committees presented domestic articles to the newly married couples which will help in settling their lives. After the marriages, committee will keep tab on couples to see them live happily without any family problems.

The Prabhandak Committtee made all arrangements including accommodation facilities, Guru-ka-Langar (breakfast, lunch and dinner etc).

A very good example of supporting a new tradition of marrying our daughters and sisters by ignoring empty show off the pride-ridden marriage traditions. I feel, all Sikhs should participate in it and eventually it will leave a deep impact on dowry-evil just as eventually "sati-tradition" was eradicated in Sikhs with the inspiration of Guru Ram Das Ji. Thanks for the posts
