Re: Today's youth consider punjabi language cheap...Help!!

Gurtej Singh Ji ,
I'm somewhat amazed to see that the language of Gujarati Hindus is Gujarati , Maharashtrian Hindus is Marathi , Kannada , Telugu , Tamil ,Malalyalam for Karnatka , Andhra , Tamil , Kerala respectively , Bengali Hindus for Bangali , Assamese for Assam Hindus , each states residents claim their regional language as their own then why in whole of India , only PUNJABI is singled out as the language of one community ie SIKHS , why not Punjabi Hindus claim it as the language of Punjabis as a whole . Why this discrimination reserved for Punjabi only . Recently I took a flight from Mumbai to Chandigarh , the passengers ( Punjabi Hindus ) in the flight while boarding from Mumbai were talking flawlessly in Punjabi even at the Airlines Check-In counter at the Mumbai Airport but immediately on reaching Chandigarh , all of them started conversing in Hindi . This was not the case of 4-5 persons but almost all the flight was full of TURNCOATS like them . Previously before 1947 it was the Muslims of Punjab who preferred to converse in Persian & Urdu now the Hindus of Punjab . To make the matters worse , the Sikhs have also adopted the ways of Hindus in HATING PUNJABI especially the urban Sikhs who have forgotton why they are Sikhs first of all , just following their Hindu brothers in rat race leaving each & everything behind . To compound it , the schools , colleges are all owned by Hindus who make it a point to make speaking Punjabi a crime in schools & colleges of Punjab , no matter how many times you converse with them in Punjabi , the reply will always come in HINDI . Whether it is just casually so or predetermined , I 'm not sure . But Sikhs have left Punjabi in the schools & colleges owned by them also where HINDI rules the roost . Sikhs need to wake up , if the young generation is not conversant in punjabi then it will not easily attach to Gurbani , also the community needs to open more & more schools , colleges instead of wasting thousands of crores in RAIN SABAI Kirtans , Roadside langars , chabeels , Kirtan darbars , nagar Kirtans , series of Akhand Paaths etc etc . Also make it a point to compulsarily speak Punjabi & hit back by persisting on Punjabi when ever confronted by Hindi .

Re: Today's youth consider punjabi language cheap...Help!!

Gurtejsingh Ji,

WOW, that's news to me! I'm quite shocked. Do you think that kind of mentality towards the Punjabi language is only by the youth who are born and bred in India?

From what I have experienced, having been born and grown up in Australia, I have never ever heard anyone diss our language- rather kids here seem to take great pride in being able to speak punjabi .. I remember growing up and still now, my cousins generally always converse in Punjabi. I am so so so thankful to our wonderful parents - although the whole "Don't speak English! Speak Punjabi at home!!" didn't go down well with us as kids growing up, I'm so glad they said all that now!...Kids even love going to Punjabi school here
Reference:: Sikh Philosophy Network http://www.sikhphilosophy.net/showthread.php?t=30310
Reference:: Sikh Philosophy Network http://www.sikhphilosophy.net/showthread.php?t=30310

Although, I must say, ofcoarse there is the odd kid here and there who pretends they can't speak 'properly' when they can .. but I think that might be a way for them to feel more intune with the majority of the community, rather than the minority punjabi speakers ... I'm just blabbering here, but this is what I have thought from my observations. I'm all over the place, just spilling my thoughts

Although one thing I have to say is - I find the punjabi I have learnt is quite ... 'pindu'. I remember going to punjabi school, and thinking ..."What the .. is this punjabi school or what?!"...This, as dalbirk Ji said, leads to great difficulties in reading Gurbani, as I have experienced this.

Hope that gives you some hope!

Actually there is nothing to be alarmed about. Any language in the world has dialects. One dialect is spoken differently from another dialect. People might not feel comfortable opening conversation in their particular dialect simply because of the great possibility of being made fun of. So they resort to a standardized language, the national language - Hindi.

In Malaysia I have seen two Chinese, a guy and a kid speak in Malay and I wondered why not Chinese. The guy explained, the kid is from Singapore and speaks only Mandarin and I don't know how to speak Mandarin, I speak Cantonese.

Hope it makes sense.

SAT SHRI AKAL JI
i totaly agree with the above replies but we r the ones which will be the future of tomorow and if we not speak our mother tongue than one day it will disappear .
in my college i have many times seen that if two or more sikhs are talking ,they also talk in hindi.
i m not against speaking hindi , but we belong to a sikh culture and we should not forget our roots.....
my motive here to open this thread is to discuss how to teach such people that understand the sikh religion and preserve there roots in this religion.

Personally I don't think that there is any threat to Punjabi language.Punjabi singers have spreaded punjabi to many people,but this has not done anything good to sikhi.I was watching Indian idol auditions and I was surprised that even non sikhs from bhopal gave audition in Punjabi songs and got selected

I don't understand why people think that punjabi= sikhi .A sikh should learn read and write Punjabi but I don't think it is necessary for him to speak in it

Re: Today's youth consider punjabi language cheap...Help!!

Punjabi phrases are very popular throughout India as they are quite robust and very often quite bawdy!
Reference:: Sikh Philosophy Network http://www.sikhphilosophy.net/showthread.php?t=30310

But yes, there is a decline usage of good, genteel and elegant Punjabi. Another reason is that there are very few good contemporary Punjabi writers. Writers of genre of Bhai Vir Singh and Amrita Pritam who with their creativity infused life into Punjabi lie forgotten and buried in Public liberaries. The Punjab Government has done precious little to aggresively include the writings of such writers in the syllabi of schools and university.

Though Punjabi has been declared as the second language in Delhi, Haryana and Himachal, the signages are badly mispelt in these places.
Reference:: Sikh Philosophy Network http://www.sikhphilosophy.net/showthread.php?t=30310

Bhai Vir Singh was equally proficient and prolific in English, Braj and Urdu and he was goaded by his elders to choose these languages to become a successful writer but he conciously chose Punjabi because at that time Punjabi was in a state of terminal decline. His writings not only infused fresh life but also triggered the the Singh sabha movement by making masses proud of Sikhi and Punjabi heritage.

my original post was about the youth....
my original post was that how , today's youth look at punjabi language.
its that today's so called modern n stilish teenagers are no more intrested in continuing with punjabi.
ok i agree if the other person is hindu or british or belong to any other culture(i respect all as one) than its necessarry to use that language which all can understand but why r we going away from punjabiyaat......???
why now we r not willing to use or promote the punjabi language.
today we dont use punjabi language even at home.....tomoro also we do same ....then our future childrens will also do same.....one day it will disappear then.......
