Even as the police failed to find any substantial leads in connection to Monday’s attack on Sri Guru Granth Sahib World University Vice-Chancellor Dr Jasbir Singh Ahluwalia, it believes that the attempt may be a result of “hate crime”. Meanwhile, the Fatehgarh Sahib police on Tuesday released a sketch of the accused, based on the description provided by eyewitnesses and the taxi driver, whom the accused had hired to enter the university.
“It appears to be a hate crime,” Fatehgarh Sahib SSP R S Khatra said while releasing the sketch of the assailant, who was described as being around 6 feet tall, wheatish in color and wearing shirt and trousers while he had fired at the V-C. Khatra added that the assailant had consumed liquor in the taxi and made degretory remarks against Ahluwalia before proceeding towards the university.
Requesting anonymity, a senior officer said that while questioning the taxi driver, the police have come to know that the assailant had consumed one-third of a bottle of VAT 69 scotch whisky after asking him to stop near a rehriwala. When contacted, DIG (Ludhiana Range) M F Farooqui said the bottle of liquor has been recovered. “We are in the process of obtaining fingerprints from that bottle. The case is being investigated from all angles. There had been resentment among a section of the people, who believed that Ahluwalia was not the right person for the job in light of the controversies he had courted in the past,” ,” Farooqui added.
Till Monday, the police have questioned more than 30 people, including those who had been either been dismissed/terminated by Ahluwalia from the university, who left on their own or those associated with him in his previous stints.
Meanwhile, police are yet to find the man whose motorcycle the accused had snatched to flee the university. In Patiala, Punjab Pradesh Congress Committee president Capt Amarinder Singh said that attack on Ahluwalia reflected poorly on the state’s governance. Saying that he was personally opposed to Ahluwalia’s appointment as the V-C, Amarinder added: “Having said that, I also strongly condemn the attack on him.” http://www.indianexpress.com/news/at...crime/826287/0

Punjab varsity V-C shot at, critical Image - Attacker's Police Sketch
An unidentified gunman on Monday shot Dr Jasbir Singh Ahluwalia, vice chancellor of newly-formed SGPC's Sri Guru Granth Sahib World University, leaving him crtically injured. The bullet reportedly pierced through the temple and got lodged in his jaw line. Ahluwalia was referred to the
PGI, where his condition was stated to be critical. Meanwhile, the assailant, in his mid-forties having a long beard managed to flee unchallenged from the campus. Unconfirmed reports say he was raised pro- Khalistan slogans before leaving.
Pertinent, the Panthic and radical organizations were opposing the appointment of Dr Ahluwalia as founder vice chancellor of University, due to controversy of Saru Rana sexual harassment case, in which latter was acquitted in 2010.
The incident occurred at 3.30pm when the vice chancellor reached the reception area to pass instructions to his staff. The assailant was reportedly waiting there and got attention of the VC after calling him.
Giving information, SSP Ranbir Singh Khatra said that after grabbing attention by calling 'VC Sahib' the assailant fired first round in air and second toward VC's head. The VC tried miserable to duck, but it was too late."
Rajwinder Singh, a private security man with vice chancellor and one of the eyewitnesses said, "It happened so quickly. VC sahib was talking on his mobile phone while walking. I heard the gun shot fired in air the before I could react the second shot was fired. I rushed to pick up him and the assailant fled", he added.
Following the incident, the Police sealed the university - the first academic session of which was inaugurated by CM PS Badal on July 25. DC and SSP closely inspected the spot. SSP said that there was no CCTV in the reception. "Thus, there is little information available about the assailant. We have registered a case of attempt to murder under Section 307 IPC in this regard and are tracking the mobile call details of entire area to look for a clue", he said.
It is pertinent to mention here that Dr Ahluwalia had held the post of vice-chancellor of Punjabi University in Patiala from May 1999 to April 2002. He was sacked from the post by the Capt Amarinder Singh government as university staff and students had been demonstrating for a long time seeking his removal. That time, Dr Ahluwalia was facing two case one relating to attempt to murder and other attempt to rape and outrage the modesty of a student. He is former civil services officer and a leading Punjabi poet.
Meanwhile, the SGPC President Avtar Singh Makkar, who is also chancellor of University, has condemned the incident. The new uni is named Sri guru granth sahib International uni...and there were concerns voiced that this UNI should have an authentic Sikh SCHOLAR who has doen research on Sri Guru Granth Sahib Ji Gurbani Sikh religion etc and be an Amrtidharee. The BadalAdmin ran rough shod over all such concerns as well a s those in the quote at the beginning of this post. The person who fired the shots will be labelled"aatwadee" EXTREMIST/TERRORIST.BUT isnt the ACTIONS of the Admin/Govt of badal that led to this outburst also EXTREMIST? isnt it Govt extremism to ride rough shod over valid public concerns ?? Its been said that actions lead to reactions...this seems to be the case here..Dr Ahluwaliah was obvioulsy the wrong person for the JOB.

| | | | | Re: Attack on Jasbir Singh Ahluwalia Has Shades of Hate Crime This is what lawyers would call "a bad brief." Shooting someone in the jaw, no matter what his actions have been, is reprehensible. Yet he is not a sympathetic character is he? And your suspicions are warranted given the track record of officialdom on all counts. Does it provide a motive for crime? Of course not! Can we expect open-handed accounts of progress in the investigation throughout the coming weeks? Any bets? Who planted the idea that this was a "hate crime" in the first place? Could in truth have been a "hate crime." Hate works both ways. | | The following member appreciates spnadmin Ji for the above message. | |

Aman Sood/TNS
Fatehgarh Sahib, August 3
Two days after the Vice-Chancellor of Sri Guru Granth Sahib World University, Fatehgarh Sahib, Jasbir Singh Ahluwalia, was shot at, the district police arrested a 47-year-old Sangrur resident and recovered the weapon used in the crime.
Police sources identified the arrested as Jora Singh of Khanauri village. The latter reportedly confessed to the crime during interrogation by the CIA staff. “He visited the university campus on July 28 for admission of a relative. He was upset over the attire of some girl students there. Also, he was not treated well by the VC who denied admission to his relative,” a source said. A well-reputed person, he ran a trust that helped fish out bodies of accident victims from the Bhakra canal. The CM had appreciated his work a few years back. source:http://www.tribuneindia.com/2011/20110804/main4.htm | | The following members appreciate Soul_jyot Ji for the above message. | |
