Barnala district. The police also arrested a woman who allegedly took the girl to this place.
The woman's identity, however, was yet to be disclosed. Talking to Hindustan Times, DIG Paramraj Singh Umranangal said the teenaged girl would be handed over to her parents after an interrogation.
The DIG said Inderjit Singh, SHO, city police station, had been sent to Police Lines and a department inquiry marked into the charges levelled against him by family members of the deceased youth, Gagandeep Singh., The youth's father, Gurcharan Singh, had alleged on Monday that Gagandeep's life could have been saved if the SHO had taken swift action on their complaint about kidnapping.
Gagandeep had been found dead in a canal near Bhadni Kalan village, 25 km from Jagraon, on Monday. The DIG said the girl's cousin, Billu, had surrendered before the police. The police registered a supplementary FIR on Monday and included the names of Surjit Singh of Lakha village, Saudagar Singh, the girl's uncle, and a third person, also named Gurcharan Singh.
Four suspects are in police custody, while four others are on the run. After a post-mortem examination, Gagandeep's body was handed over to family members. He was cremated at Jat Pura village. Gagandeep's family members and others staged a protest in front of the SSP's office on Tuesday morning and demanded immediate arrest of all accused. They had planned to block rail traffic, but local leaders intervened after police officials promised prompt action.
