Body of Gagandeep, who belonged to a Dalit family and was having a love affair with a girl of Jat Sikh family from the same village, was found at the bank of a canal in Badni village in Moga district on Monday.
The youth had been missing from Saturday when he had eloped with the girl. The duo was caught by the girl's relatives Kulwant Singh, Sukhchain Singh and Jugraj Singh at Jagraon bus stand.
The three, who were arrested by the police, revealed during interrogation that they had taken the two to the farm of Surjeet Singh in nearby Lakha village from where they had taken Gagandeep to Badni and killed him. Earlier they had beaten him mercilessly, said station house officer of Jagraon police station, Inderjeet Singh.
Based on the information provided by the accused, the police recovered the body. Earlier, when the youth's family had gone to the police station to lodge a complaint, a case of kidnapping was registered and police had refused to believe his kin, who had suspected all along that Gagandeep has been killed by the girl's family and kin.
Former sarpanch of Lamma Jattpura village, Buta Singh said that for two days police was clueless about both the youth and the girl. The youth's family protested at the police on Monday from 11 am to 2 pm following which assured prompt action.
Inderjeet Singh said that initially they had registered a case under section 364 and now they have slapped section 302 against all the accused. He said other accused Saudagar Singh, Janak Singh, Surjeet Singh, Gurcharan Singh and Billu Singh are on the run.
