Recently I was thinking that after creation of khalsa in 1699 sikhs emerged as power. For first 150 years the time was toughest for khalsa still they keep on winning.Everytime when someone tried to destroy them they emerged as bigger power and sikhism became popular and spread among people.

But after 1848 sikhs were constantly losing

in 1) 1848 they lost their kingdom

2) We lost many people after that who deserted sikhism

3) In 1947 we lost many of our people, best fertile land,Nankaana sahib many sikh historical Gurdwara's

4) Then we did not get the autonomous region that was promised

5) again in 1984 we lost too much

6)And these days everyone knows the condition of sikh panth

Don't you people think that it is time to think what went wrong with sikhism and sikh people?

Kanwardeep Ji

A Sakhi comes to mind where Guru Nanak blessed a village of good people to be "Ujdae Raho"!! virtually means expand your wings and shower goodness all around...

Re: Sikhs losing since 1848

Kanwardeep Ji , We as Sikhs have become Manmukhs instead of Gurmukhs . We try to find profit in anything we do . We go to Pakistan for visiting Nanakana Sahib in Jathas & carry goods to sell there for a PROFIT & come back laden with goodies to sell them again for PROFIT . Our leaders don't blink an eyelid before cutting deal with most anti-Sikh RSS , Congress , Deras like DSS, RSSB & each & everyone . We no longer believe in Simran , AmritVela , Baana , Amrit , Rehatnaamas ,5Ks . We feel proud to serve liquor at our functions & have this REPUTATION as the heaviest drinkers in the whole world , biggest female foeticiders in the world , soon to become biggest drug addicts in the world , biggest TOBACCO consumers in the whole world . We infact have this tendency to be more CONSUMERIST minded than even the Americans ( cannot be practically because we cannot afford ) . We are infact bigger worshippers of MAMMON than Hindu Banias even . You name it & we have it . We like to show our SECULARISM by marrying our daughters to Hindus , calling ourselves modern SIKHS by getting clean shaven & discouraging anybody who keeps hair . We observe Navratras , Shraddhas , Astrological taboos , Religious bathings , caste discriminations even more diligently than Hindus , visit Pirs & graves more diligently than Muslims . I have this feeling that God forbid BLUESTAR were to happen in 2009 or 2010 then most of us will instead of protesting will register ourselves as Hindus immediately . So much for this time , I feel I'm getting too cynical spreading too much negativity all around . So forgive me please .

Kanwardeep Singh ji, Aman ji and Dalbirk ji, all are right. As per Guru Nanak jis blessings, many manmukhs have been left in Punjab but a few Gurmukhs have left Punjab to spread Gurus message not only all over India but also all over the world! But some manmukhs have also left Punjab for personal aggrandizement only. So they continue with their manmukhi outside Punjab also. Such Manmukhs shall meet the fate in Sir Walter Scot's famous Poem, the concluding lines of which (As I remember) are:

And doubly dying shall go down,
To the vile dust from whence he sprung,
Un-wept, unhonoured and unsung!"

Re: Sikhs losing since 1848

Recently I was reading a book - Satwant Kaur by Bhai Sahib Dr. Vir Singh - there were things that Satwant kaur - a singhnii who was captured and sold for Rs. 5 in kabul market did to free herself. The author has discribbed the way of sikh life in so much details that I for a moment was trying to relate that to the way we r living - cann't find any thing similar - and I called myself gursikh - merly a formatly. A sikh at those time would never discuss anything about personal problems with any non-sikh and would take his matters to elders and panj pyares. but now even ur takhas committes r fighting among themself.

I doubt these losses are religious. They are more geo-political.

For Sikhs from the time of Guru Hargobind miri and piri makes it impossible and undesirable to divide politics and religion. One of the responsibilities gladly shouldered in Sikh history by all Sikhs. We are however tied in knots when we become "in-fighters."

Well wherever politics is, in-fighting will follow. I meant more than politics within Sikhs.

I think the time around the middle of 18th century was one of big change. Brits were gaining control in India. The old kingdoms were dying. Sikhism I guess got the raw end of the stick in political terms but then again I think Sikhs also increased in this period too so its a bit of give and take.

Dalbirk ji

Though i agree with your points let add another thing. If I have to assess sikhs then they are weakest in diplomacy.Just look at muslims they chose jinnah as thier leader who was sharp and diplomatic though a not much practicing muslim.imagine would sikhs have done the same by choosing a person who could serve the best in the interest of entire sikh community though he himself is not so much of practicing.Dplomatically we were and we are the weakest community of India and that is costing us heavily.
