40 tonnes of adulterated sweets seized in Chandigarh

Continuing the drive to check adulteration in sweets, the UT Food and Supplies department has seized over 40 tonnes of adulterated sweets in Chandigarh in last one week, said Kavle V Parshuram, director of UT Food and Supplies department.

Almost all the shops, bakeries and factories inspected during the raids were found selling adulterated sweets.

So far, the department has raided the bakeries, shops and factories in Manimajra, Bapudham and in various sectors of Chandigarh. The sweet shops in Sector — 10, 11, 12, 14, 18, 19, 26 etc were also inspected during the raids.

Adulterated khoya, patisa, ghee, milk products, barfi were seized by the department during raids.

The raids are being carried out by senior UT officials to implement the Prevention of Food Adulteration Act 1954, in an effective way and to ensure that pure food items are being sold in the city’s market during the festive season.

The administration on Wednesday issued warning to all food business operators in slums, colonies, villages and sweet shops in city that if they are preparing sweets in unhygienic conditions and without food licence, strict action will be taken against them under Food Safety and Standards Act, 2006 and under Section 2 of the Epidemic Diseases Act 1897 (Central Act No III of 1897).

The administration has also requested the residents of Chandigarh that if they find such illegal activity being carried out in their neighbourhood, they should inform at these numbers of Government Multi Specialty Hospital enquiry in Sector-16 here. The numbers — 102, 2782457, 26459204, 26459205, 2768255 and 2768263.

In last one week, administration has intensified the drive to check the adulteration in the sweets. The higher authorities will continue the raids during the festive season.
