सुख सागरु हरि नामु है गुरमुखि पाइआ जाइ ॥
Sukẖ sāgar har nām hai gurmukẖ pā▫i▫ā jā▫e.
The Name of the Lord is the Ocean of Peace; the Gurmukhs obtain it.
ਵਾਹਿਗੁਰੂ ਦਾ ਨਾਮ ਸ਼ਾਂਤੀ ਦਾ ਸਮੁੰਦਰ ਹੈ। ਗੁਰਾਂ ਦੀ ਦਇਆ ਦੁਆਰਾ ਇਹ ਪ੍ਰਾਪਤ ਕੀਤਾ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ।
ਸਾਗਰੁ = ਸਮੁੰਦਰ। ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ = ਗੁਰੂ ਵਲ ਮੂੰਹ ਕੀਤਿਆਂ।

ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦਾ ਨਾਮ ਸੁਖਾਂ ਦਾ ਸਮੁੰਦਰ ਹੈ, ਪਰ ਇਹ ਮਿਲਦਾ ਹੈ ਗੁਰੂ ਦੀ ਸਰਨ ਪਿਆਂ।

The creator’s name is ocean of comfort, facing upto the creator such is reached

Quote:

ਅਨਦਿਨੁ ਨਾਮੁ ਧਿਆਈਐ ਸਹਜੇ ਨਾਮਿ ਸਮਾਇ ॥

अनदिनु नामु धिआईऐ सहजे नामि समाइ ॥
An▫ḏin nām ḏẖi▫ā▫ī▫ai sėhje nām samā▫e.
Meditating on the Naam, night and day, they are easily and intuitively absorbed in the Naam.
ਰੈਣ ਦਿਹੁੰ ਸਾਈਂ ਦੇ ਨਾਮ ਦਾ ਜਾਪ ਕਰਨ ਦੁਆਰਾ, ਜੀਵ ਸੁਖੈਨ ਹੀ ਨਾਮ ਅੰਦਰ ਲੀਨ ਹੋ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ।
ਅਨਦਿਨੁ = ਹਰ ਰੋਜ਼। ਧਿਆਈਐ = ਸਿਮਰਨਾ ਚਾਹੀਦਾ ਹੈ। ਸਹਜੇ = ਆਤਮਕ ਅਡੋਲਤਾ ਵਿਚ (ਟਿਕ ਕੇ)। ਸਮਾਇ = ਲੀਨ ਹੋ ਕੇ।

ਪ੍ਰਭੂ-ਨਾਮ ਦੀ ਰਾਹੀਂ ਆਤਮਕ ਅਡੋਲਤਾ ਵਿਚ ਲੀਨ ਹੋ ਕੇ ਹਰ ਵੇਲੇ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦਾ ਨਾਮ ਸਿਮਰਨਾ ਚਾਹੀਦਾ ਹੈ।

Everyday recollect the understanding of the creator in absorbing peaceful reflection

ਅੰਦਰੁ ਰਚੈ ਹਰਿ ਸਚ ਸਿਉ ਰਸਨਾ ਹਰਿ ਗੁਣ ਗਾਇ ॥੧॥

अंदरु रचै हरि सच सिउ रसना हरि गुण गाइ ॥१॥
Anḏar racẖai har sacẖ si▫o rasnā har guṇ gā▫e. ||1||
Their inner beings are immersed in the True Lord; they sing the Glorious Praises of the Lord. ||1||
ਉਸ ਦਾ ਮਨ ਸੱਚੇ ਵਾਹਿਗੁਰੂ ਨਾਲ ਅਭੇਦ ਹੋ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ ਅਤੇ (ਉਸਦੀ) ਜੀਭ ਵਾਹਿਗੁਰੂ ਦਾ ਜੱਸ ਗਾਉਂਦੀ ਹੈ।
ਅੰਦਰੁ = ਹਿਰਦਾ {ਨੋਟ: ਲਫ਼ਜ਼ 'ਅੰਦਰੁ' ਨਾਂਵ ਹੈ, 'ਅੰਦਰਿ' ਸੰਬੰਧਕ ਹੈ}। ਰਸਨਾ = ਜੀਭ। ਗਾਇ = ਗਾ ਕੇ।੧।

ਜੀਭ ਨਾਲ ਹਰੀ ਦੇ ਗੁਣ ਗਾ ਕੇ ਹਿਰਦਾ ਸਦਾ-ਥਿਰ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਨਾਲ ਇਕ-ਮਿਕ ਹੋ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ ॥੧॥

Heart is imbued with truth of the creator, the tongue so sings the virtues

ਭਾਈ ਰੇ ਜਗੁ ਦੁਖੀਆ ਦੂਜੈ ਭਾਇ ॥

भाई रे जगु दुखीआ दूजै भाइ ॥
Bẖā▫ī re jag ḏukẖī▫ā ḏūjai bẖā▫e.
O Siblings of Destiny, the world is in misery, engrossed in the love of duality.
ਹੈ ਭਰਾ! ਦਵੈਤ-ਭਾਵ ਅੰਦਰ ਖ਼ਚਤ ਕਾਰਨ ਸੰਸਾਰ ਮੁਸੀਬਤ ਵਿੱਚ ਹੈ।
ਦੂਜੈ ਭਾਇ = (ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਤੋਂ ਬਿਨਾ) ਕਿਸੇ ਹੋਰ ਦੇ ਪਿਆਰ ਵਿਚ।

ਹੇ ਭਾਈ! (ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਨੂੰ ਭੁਲਾ ਕੇ ਮਾਇਆ ਅਦਿਕ) ਹੋਰ ਪਿਆਰ ਵਿਚ ਪੈ ਕੇ ਜਗਤ ਦੁਖੀ ਹੋ ਰਿਹਾ ਹੈ।

People the world is miserable any other second way

ਗੁਰਾਂ ਦੀ ਸ਼ਰਣਾਗਤ ਸੰਭਾਲਣ ਦੁਆਰਾ ਤੇ ਰੈਣ ਦਿਹੁੰ ਨਾਮ ਦਾ ਅਰਾਧਨ ਕਰਕੇ ਆਰਾਮ ਪਾ ਲਉ। ਠਹਿਰਾਉ।
ਲਹਹਿ = ਪ੍ਰਾਪਤ ਕਰੇਂਗਾ।੧।

ਤੂੰ ਗੁਰੂ ਦੀ ਸਰਨ ਪੈ ਕੇ ਹਰ ਰੋਜ਼ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦਾ ਨਾਮ ਸਿਮਰ; (ਇਸ ਤਰ੍ਹਾਂ) ਸੁਖ ਮਾਣੇਂਗਾ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ॥

In creator’s respectful company comfort arrives, everyday reflect on the understanding

ਸਾਚੇ ਮੈਲੁ ਨ ਲਾਗਈ ਮਨੁ ਨਿਰਮਲੁ ਹਰਿ ਧਿਆਇ ॥

साचे मैलु न लागई मनु निरमलु हरि धिआइ ॥
Sācẖe mail na lāg▫ī man nirmal har ḏẖi▫ā▫e.
The truthful ones are not stained by filth. Meditating on the Lord, their minds remain pure.
ਸੱਚੇ ਪੁਰਸ਼ ਨੂੰ ਕੋਈ ਗੰਦਗੀ ਨਹੀਂ ਚਿਮੜਦੀ ਅਤੇ ਉਹ ਪਵਿੱਤ੍ਰ ਚਿੱਤ ਨਾਲ ਵਾਹਿਗੁਰੂ ਦਾ ਸਿਮਰਨ ਕਰਦਾ ਹੈ।
ਲਗਾਈ = ਲਾਗਏ, ਲਾਗੈ। ਧਿਆਇ = ਸਿਮਰ ਕੇ।

ਸਦਾ-ਥਿਰਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਨੂੰ (ਵਿਕਾਰਾਂ ਦੀ) ਮੈਲ ਨਹੀਂ ਲੱਗ ਸਕਦੀ, (ਉਸ) ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦਾ ਨਾਮ ਸਿਮਰਿਆਂ (ਸਿਮਰਨ ਵਾਲੇ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਦਾ) ਮਨ (ਭੀ) ਪਵਿਤ੍ਰ ਹੋ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ।

True do not attract impurities in mind and stay pure reflecting on the creator

Quote:

ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਸਬਦੁ ਪਛਾਣੀਐ ਹਰਿ ਅੰਮ੍ਰਿਤ ਨਾਮਿ ਸਮਾਇ ॥

गुरमुखि सबदु पछाणीऐ हरि अम्रित नामि समाइ ॥
Gurmukẖ sabaḏ pacẖẖāṇī▫ai har amriṯ nām samā▫e.
The Gurmukhs realize the Word of the Shabad; they are immersed in the Ambrosial Nectar of the Lord's Name.
ਗੁਰਾਂ ਦੇ ਰਾਹੀਂ ਸਾਹਿਬ ਨੂੰ ਅਨੁਭਵ ਕਰ ਅਤੇ ਵਾਹਿਗੁਰੂ ਦੀ ਸੁਧਾ-ਸਰੂਪ ਨਾਮ ਅੰਦਰ ਲੀਨ ਹੋ ਜਾ।
ਸਬਦੁ ਪਛਾਣੀਐ = ਸਿਫ਼ਤ-ਸਾਲਾਹ ਦੀ ਬਾਣੀ ਨਾਲ ਸਾਂਝ ਪਾਣੀ ਚਾਹੀਦੀ ਹੈ। ਨਾਮਿ = ਨਾਮਿ ਵਿਚ।

ਗੁਰੂਦੀ ਸਰਨ ਪੈ ਕੇ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦੀ ਸਿਫ਼ਤ-ਸਾਲਾਹ ਦੀ ਬਾਣੀ ਨਾਲ ਡੂੰਘੀ ਸਾਂਝ ਪਾਣੀ ਚਾਹੀਦੀਹੈ।(ਜੇਹੜਾ ਸਾਂਝ ਪਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ ਉਹ) ਆਤਮਕ ਜੀਵਨ ਦੇਣ ਵਾਲੇ ਹਰਿ-ਨਾਮ ਵਿਚ ਲੀਨ ਹੋ ਜਾਂਦਾਹੈ।

Humble looking up to the creator recognize the words with pure understanding immersion

ਗੁਰ ਗਿਆਨੁ ਪ੍ਰਚੰਡੁ ਬਲਾਇਆ ਅਗਿਆਨੁ ਅੰਧੇਰਾ ਜਾਇ ॥੨॥

गुर गिआनु प्रचंडु बलाइआ अगिआनु अंधेरा जाइ ॥२॥
Gur gi▫ān parcẖand balā▫i▫ā agi▫ān anḏẖerā jā▫e. ||2||
The Guru has lit the brilliant light of spiritual wisdom, and the darkness of ignorance has been dispelled. ||2||
ਗੁਰਾ ਨੇ ਬ੍ਰਹਮ ਗਿਆਤ ਦੀ ਚਮਕੀਲੀ ਰੋਸ਼ਨੀ ਪ੍ਰਕਾਸ਼ ਕਰ ਦਿੱਤੀ ਹੈ ਜਿਸ ਨਾਲ ਬੇ-ਸਮਝੀ ਦਾ ਹਨ੍ਹੇਰਾ ਦੂਰ ਹੋ ਗਿਆ ਹੈ।
ਪ੍ਰਚੰਡੁ = ਤੇਜ਼। ਬਲਾਇਆ = ਜਗਾਇਆ।੨।

(ਜਿਸ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਨੇ ਆਪਣੇ ਅੰਦਰ) ਗੁਰੂ ਦਾ ਗਿਆਨ ਚੰਗੀ ਤਰ੍ਹਾਂ ਰੌਸ਼ਨ ਕਰ ਲਿਆ ਹੈ (ਉਸ ਦੇ ਅੰਦਰੋਂ) ਅਗਿਆਨਤਾ ਦਾ ਹਨੇਰਾ ਦੂਰ ਹੋ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ ॥੨॥

Creator understanding quickly awakened removes darkness of ignorance

ਮਨਮੁਖ ਮੈਲੇ ਮਲੁ ਭਰੇ ਹਉਮੈ ਤ੍ਰਿਸਨਾ ਵਿਕਾਰੁ ॥

मनमुख मैले मलु भरे हउमै त्रिसना विकारु ॥
Manmukẖ maile mal bẖare ha▫umai ṯarisnā vikār.
The self-willed manmukhs are polluted. They are filled with the pollution of egotism, wickedness and desire.
ਖੁਦ-ਪਸੰਦ ਅਪਵਿਤ੍ਰ ਹਨ, ਉਹ ਹੰਕਾਰ ਤੇ ਖ਼ਾਹਿਸ਼ ਦੇ ਪਾਪ ਦੀ ਪਲੀਤੀ ਨਾਲ ਲਬਾਲਬ ਹਨ।
ਵਿਕਾਰੁ = ਰੋਗ।

ਆਪਣੇਮਨ ਦੇ ਪਿੱਛੇ ਤੁਰਨ ਵਾਲੇ ਬੰਦੇ ਮਲੀਨ-ਮਨ ਰਹਿੰਦੇ ਹਨ ਵਿਕਾਰਾਂ ਦੀ ਮੈਲ ਨਾਲ ਲਿਬੜੇਰਹਿੰਦੇ ਹਨ, ਉਹਨਾਂ ਦੇ ਅੰਦਰ ਹਉਮੈ ਤੇ ਲਾਲਚ ਦਾ ਰੋਗ ਟਿਕਿਆ ਰਹਿੰਦਾ ਹੈ।

Conceited stay full of impurities of ego, greed and debasement

Quote:

ਬਿਨੁ ਸਬਦੈ ਮੈਲੁ ਨ ਉਤਰੈ ਮਰਿ ਜੰਮਹਿ ਹੋਇ ਖੁਆਰੁ ॥

बिनु सबदै मैलु न उतरै मरि जमहि होइ खुआरु ॥
Bin sabḏai mail na uṯrai mar jamėh ho▫e kẖu▫ār.
Without the Shabad, this pollution is not washed off; through the cycle of death and rebirth, they waste away in misery.
ਰੱਬ ਦੇ ਨਾਮ ਬਾਝੋਂ ਪਲੀਤੀ ਧੋਤੀ ਨਹੀਂ ਜਾਂਦੀ ਅਤੇ ਪ੍ਰਾਣੀ ਜੰਮਣ ਮਰਣ ਅੰਦਰ ਅਵਾਜਾਰ ਹੁੰਦਾ ਹੈ।
ਮਰਿ ਜੰਮਹਿ = (ਆਤਮਕ ਮੌਤੇ) ਮਰ ਕੇ (ਮੁੜ ਮੁੜ) ਜੰਮਦੇ ਹਨ। ਹੋਇ = ਹੋ ਕੇ।

ਇਹ ਮੈਲ ਗੁਰੂ ਦੇ ਸ਼ਬਦ ਤੋਂ ਬਿਨਾ ਨਹੀਂ ਉਤਰਦੀ, (ਸ਼ਬਦ ਤੋਂ ਬਿਨਾ) ਆਤਮਕ ਮੌਤ ਸਹੇੜ ਕੇ ਖ਼ੁਆਰ ਹੋ ਹੋ ਕੇ ਜਨਮ-ਮਰਨ ਦੇ ਗੇੜ ਵਿਚ ਪਏ ਰਹਿੰਦੇ ਹਨ।

Without true words the impurities don’t leave and birth death are wasted

Quote:

ਧਾਤੁਰ ਬਾਜੀ ਪਲਚਿ ਰਹੇ ਨਾ ਉਰਵਾਰੁ ਨ ਪਾਰੁ ॥੩॥

धातुर बाजी पलचि रहे ना उरवारु न पारु ॥३॥
Ḏẖāṯur bājī palacẖ rahe nā urvār na pār. ||3||
Engrossed in this transitory drama, they are not at home in either this world or the next. ||3||
ਜੋ ਛਿਨ-ਭੰਗਰ ਖੇਡ ਅੰਦਰ ਖਚਤ ਹੋਏ ਹੋਏ ਹਨ, ਉਹ ਨਾਂ ਇਸ ਲੋਕ ਤੇ ਨਾਂ ਹੀ ਪ੍ਰਲੋਕ ਅੰਦਰ ਕਿਸੇ ਕੰਮ ਦੇ ਹਨ।
ਧਾਤੁਰ = ਨਾਸਵੰਤ। ਬਾਜੀ = ਖੇਡ। ਪਲਚਿ ਰਹੇ = ਫਸ ਰਹੇ ਹਨ। ਉਰਵਾਰੁ = ਉਰਲਾ ਬੰਨਾ।੩।

ਉਹ ਇਸ ਨਾਸਵੰਤ ਜਗਤ-ਖੇਡ ਵਿਚ ਫਸੇ ਰਹਿੰਦੇ ਹਨ, ਇਸ ਵਿਚੋਂ ਉਹਨਾਂ ਨੂੰ ਨਾਹ ਉਰਲਾ ਬੰਨਾ ਲੱਭਦਾ ਹੈ ਨਾਹ ਪਾਰਲਾ ਬੰਨਾ ॥੩॥

Destructible games entanglement persists and one is neither here nor there

ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਜਪ ਤਪ ਸੰਜਮੀ ਹਰਿ ਕੈ ਨਾਮਿ ਪਿਆਰੁ ॥

गुरमुखि जप तप संजमी हरि कै नामि पिआरु ॥
Gurmukẖ jap ṯap sanjmī har kai nām pi▫ār.
For the Gurmukh, the love of the Name of the Lord is chanting, deep meditation and self-discipline.
ਰੱਬ ਦੇ ਨਾਮ ਦੀ ਪ੍ਰੀਤ ਹੀ ਗੁਰੂ-ਪਿਆਰ ਦੀ ਪੂਜਾ, ਤਪੱਸਿਆ ਤੇ ਸਵੈ-ਰਿਆਜ਼ਤ ਹੈ।
ਜਪ ਤਪ ਸੰਜਮੀ = ਜਪੀ, ਤਪੀ, ਸੰਜਮੀ, ਸਿਮਰਨ ਕਰਨ ਵਾਲਾ, ਸੇਵਾ ਕਰਨ ਵਾਲਾ, ਮਨ ਨੂੰ ਵਿਕਾਰਾਂ ਤੋਂ ਰੋਕਣ ਵਾਲਾ।

ਜੇਹੜਾਮਨੁੱਖ ਗੁਰੂ ਦੇ ਸਨਮੁਖ ਰਹਿੰਦਾ ਹੈ ਉਹ ਸਿਮਰਨ ਕਰਦਾ ਹੈ ਉਹ ਸੇਵਾ ਕਰਦਾ ਹੈ ਉਹ ਆਪਣੇਆਪ ਨੂੰ ਵਿਕਾਰਾਂ ਵਲੋਂ ਬਚਾਈ ਰੱਖਦਾ ਹੈ ਉਹ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦੇ ਨਾਮ ਵਿਚ ਪਿਆਰ ਪਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ।

One looking up to the creator keeps love of creator through pious reflection

ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਸਦਾ ਧਿਆਈਐ ਏਕੁ ਨਾਮੁ ਕਰਤਾਰੁ ॥

गुरमुखि सदा धिआईऐ एकु नामु करतारु ॥
Gurmukẖ saḏā ḏẖi▫ā▫ī▫ai ek nām karṯār.
The Gurmukh meditates forever on the Name of the One Creator Lord.
ਗੁਰੂ-ਪਿਆਰਾ ਹਮੇਸ਼ਾਂ ਇਕ ਸਿਰਜਣਹਾਰ ਦੇ ਨਾਮ ਦਾ ਆਰਾਧਨ ਕਰਦਾ ਹੈ।

नानक नामु धिआईऐ सभना जीआ का आधारु ॥४॥७॥४०॥
Nānak nām ḏẖi▫ā▫ī▫ai sabẖnā jī▫ā kā āḏẖār. ||4||7||40||
O Guru Nanak, meditate on the Naam, the Name of the Lord, the Support of all beings. ||4||7||40||
ਨਾਨਕ, ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਦੇ ਨਾਮ ਦਾ ਚਿੰਤਨ ਕਰ, ਜੋ ਸਮੂਹ ਜੀਵਾਂ ਦਾ ਆਸਰਾ ਹੈ।

ਹੇ ਨਾਨਕ! ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦਾ ਨਾਮ (ਹੀ) ਸਿਮਰਨਾ ਚਾਹੀਦਾ ਹੈ, (ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦਾ ਨਾਮ) ਸਭ ਜੀਵਾਂ (ਦੀ ਜ਼ਿੰਦਗੀ) ਦਾ ਆਸਰਾ ਹੈ ॥੪॥੭॥੪੦॥

Guru Nanak, reflect on understanding of the creator as this is the support for all living

ESSENCE:

Guru Amardas ji reflect on the understanding of the creator and state that always reflecting on such understanding, as a way to avoid debased living as well as to cleanse oneself if so impure. Guru ji states that one’s looking up to the creator, “Gurmukh”, find focus on such understanding of only one so creator. Those ignoring are neither here nor there and life is a wasted journey.

Guru ji summarizes that creator’s understanding is the way to recognize what supports all living.
