Ministry issues advisory based on experts' report

The Union Health Ministry on Tuesday asked people to avoid drinking bottle gourd juice if it is bitter. It is consumed in India for controlling diabetes.
In an advisory to the public and physicians of all Indian systems of medicine, the Department of Ayurveda, Yoga, Unani, Siddha and Homoeopathy, said a small piece of bottle gourd (lauki) should be tasted, before extracting its juice, to make sure that it is not bitter. Also, it should not be mixed with any other juice, and medical help should be sought immediately if one felt discomfort, nausea, vomiting or any feeling of uneasiness after consuming lauki juice.

The advisory is based on the report of an expert committee of the Indian Council of Medical Research, chaired by S.K. Sharma, head of the Department of Medicine, AIIMS, which was set up to investigate the safety of consuming lauki juice.
Last year, a senior scientist died and his wife was taken ill seriously after they drank the juice which was bitter. The matter was also raised in Parliament by Botcha Jhansi Lakshmi, MP from Vizianagaram, Andhra Pradesh.
The committee said any patient with symptoms of discomfort, nausea, vomiting, diarrhoea and gastrointestinal bleeding after consumption of lauki juice should be put on IV fluids before a detailed examination of the vital organs was carried out. Details of the quantity of the juice consumed and its taste should be recorded.
As no specific antidote is available, physicians can manage the patients, putting them on IV fluids and blood transfusion including frozen plasma to maintain the haemodynamic and electrolyte balance, and containing gastrointestinal bleeding, according to the committee.

Baba Ramdev has always advertised the benefits and never once the dangers....it pays to be CAREFUL...its a pity that many of those who follow such Babas..almost always never visit medical doctors..so when they die of massive kidney failure etc...the INITIAL CAUSE of their death goes un-noticed....and others continue to use such ayurvedic recommendations...AANDH VISGWAASH (Blind Faith) is not only in religious rituals..its also in such Babas and their Magical Medicines...Rituals KILL the SOUL..these KILL you !! Caveat Emperor.....BEWARE and BEWARNED

Gyaniji, You are giving twist to the subject by making the issue of Baba Ramdev. How this issue arose. It is no doubt that the gourd juice is very helpful to diabetic patient. This is hard fact and you can check the blood glucose by monitoring system yourself. How the question of Swami Ramdev arose. The gourd is the natural product whether the person who extract juice of gourd, it will be the product of Baba Ramdev. To whom you are guiding to be CAREFUL. In Gourd juice consumption how the people will follow the teachings of Baba Ramdev. In India Ayruvedic way of treatment is being used from centuries, like mint for stomach ache. The solution of sugar and salt for diarrhea treatment. How can you describe such type of treatments suggested by a particular person. Whether the people those are taking such type of household medicines those are suffering form Kidney failure or such type of diseases. The only point of discussion was that if the gourd juice is bitter in taste then we should not consume that. Every Indian household use spices like dry ginger, dry red/ black chilli, elaichi, anise, cardamom, chat masala, chatni, black pepper, cummin, curry powder, Saunth, ajwain, corriander seeds, dill seeds, black cardamom, black pepper. You will say tomorrow that these items have been suggested by Baba Ramdev so don't consume those items as those are part of Ayurvedic.
Whether the consumption of all these items are blind faith or being advertised by Baba Ramdev. How the blind faith developed in Gourd juice consumption.
Whether under Sikhism the consumption of these items are forbidden. If not then how you described the use of these items as blind faith or connected with religious rituals. The teachings of Babas or their medicines have not been highlighted in the subject.
So kindly apply your mind and then decide how the consumption of these items will kill anybody.
Regards,
Rajneesh Madhok
