Salok Sekẖ Farīḏ ke
Salok of Sheikh Farid

Ik▫oaʼnkār saṯgur parsāḏ.
With blessing of one eternal creator esteemed teacher.

Jiṯ ḏihāṛai ḏẖan varī sāhe la▫e likẖā▫e. Malak jė kannī suṇīḏā muhu ḏekẖāle ā▫e.
When a woman to be married, such a day is ordained. Angel of death that was heard of, comes and shows the face.

Jinḏ nimāṇī kadẖī▫ai hadā kū kaṛkā▫e. Sāhe likẖe na cẖalnī jinḏū kūʼn samjẖā▫e.
Helpless soul is pulled out by breaking the bones. Convince the soul that the set time cannot be avoided.

Jinḏ vahutī maraṇ var lai jāsī parṇā▫e. Āpaṇ hathī jol kai kai gal lagai ḏẖā▫e.
Soul like bride, death the bridegroom will definitely take away. Sending by self, who will such so embrace around the neck.

vālahu nikī puraslāṯ kannī na suṇī ā▫e. Farīḏā kiṛī pavaʼnḏī▫ī kẖaṛā na āp muhā▫e. ||1||
Did the ears ever hear of a bridge thinner than hair. Farid hearing the calls, don’t cheat on yourself.

Farīḏā ḏar ḏarvesī gākẖ▫ṛī cẖalāʼn ḏunī▫āʼn bẖaṯ. Banėh uṯẖā▫ī potlī kithai vañā gẖaṯ. ||2||
Farid difficult is the path of piety to the creator, walking as though it is worldly. With little tied bag at the back, where can I go if I throw it away.

Kijẖ na bujẖai kijẖ na sujẖai ḏunī▫ā gujẖī bẖāhi. Sā▫īʼn merai cẖanga kīṯā nāhī ṯa haʼn bẖī ḏajẖāʼn āhi. ||3||
Nothing understood, nothing comes to mind, world is hidden fire. Creator did well otherwise I would have been burnt too.

Farīḏā je jāṇā ṯil thoṛ▫ṛe sammal buk bẖarī. Je jāṇā saho nandẖ▫ṛā ṯāʼn thoṛā māṇ karī. ||4||
Farid knowing limited breaths, carefully take a small handful. If knowing the custodian be like an innocent child, be so little proud.

Je jāṇā laṛ cẖẖijṇā pīdī pā▫īʼn gandẖ. Ŧai jevad mai nāhi ko sabẖ jag diṯẖā handẖ. ||5||
If knowing the loose cloth will slip, do a knot that won’t slip. No one like you, I have so checked in travelling the world.

Farid if you so learned, don’t write bad of others. Look down in your own lap with lowered head.

Farīḏā jo ṯai māran mukī▫āʼn ṯinĥā na māre gẖumm. Āpnaṛai gẖar jā▫ī▫ai pair ṯinĥā ḏe cẖumm. ||7||
Farid those who punch you, don’t hit in return. Get to your home and kiss their feet.

Farīḏā jāʼn ṯa▫o kẖataṇ vel ṯāʼn ṯū raṯā ḏunī si▫o. Marag savā▫ī nīhi jāʼn bẖari▫ā ṯāʼn laḏi▫ā. ||8||
Farid when you had time to earn, you were engrossed in the world. Death foundation continued to get strong, when breath exhausted, had to leave.

Ḏekẖ Farīḏā jo thī▫ā ḏāṛī ho▫ī bẖūr. Agahu neṛā ā▫i▫ā picẖẖā rahi▫ā ḏūr. ||9||
Farid look what happened so far, the beard has become gray. Hereafter has come near, the past is way behind.

Ḏekẖ Farīḏā jė thī▫ā sakar ho▫ī vis. Sāʼn▫ī bājẖahu āpṇe veḏaṇ kahī▫ai kis. ||10||
Farid look what happened so far, sugar has become like poison. Other than own creator who to speak about the ills.

Farīḏā akẖī ḏekẖ paṯīṇī▫āʼn suṇ suṇ rīṇe kann. Sākẖ pakanḏī ā▫ī▫ā hor kareʼnḏī vann. ||11||
Farid eyes have dimmed from seeing, hearing and hearing ears have become deaf. Branch has matured and changed into something else.

Farīḏā kālīʼn jinī na rāvi▫ā ḏẖa▫ulī rāvai ko▫e. Kar sāʼn▫ī si▫o pirhaṛī rang navelā ho▫e. ||12||
Farid, such who did not recognize when hair was black, hardly any will when hair becomes gray. Create love with the creator, rejuvenation will so show.

Quote:
ESSENCE: Baba Farid ji in first slok identify the predictable nature of death to come and we still being not ready and being in pain as soul and body part ways. Farid ji point out how exacting one needs to be such eventuality as though trying to go across a hair thin bridge at such a time of death.

Farid ji then describe how we carry unnecessary burdens as back packs versus knowing the ways of creation and the worldly distraction. Farid ji says that the creator still saves us. Farid ji suggest one to wisely spend the breaths and leave pride aside as such has no meaning to the purer one so much like a child. Farid ji suggest dedication and commitment to savor the creator as there is none other. Farid ji suggest introspection and piety versus ill treatment or revenge against others.

Farid ji in a continuing focus on lost time and passage of time remind to be vigilant and seeking the creator from early on versus gray hair, end getting nearer, sugar has become like poison, eyesight has weakened and so has the hearing, who else to seek other than the creator as the one that can cure.

Farid ji conclude in the 12th slok say for one whose hair when black is unlikely to do much when it is grey. However there still may be a chance through endearing the creator.
Please note all errors are mine and I stand corrected.

Sat Sri Akal.

PS: First 12 sloks and I will post sloks of Mahala 3rd next in this series. In the following Video, the sloks in this post go to about 3 minutes and 40 seconds,
